Celtic see Louis Munteanu transfer rivals unmasked as £10.5m bid gets the green light
The Premiership champions reportedly had a bid rejected for the Cluj striker, with the Romanian club seeking closer to €15million for their star man.
Club president Nelutu Varga claimed that he had accepted a bumper offer from an unnamed French club for Munteanu. It is now being reported that Rennes are the Ligue 1 outfit trying to do a deal, although French media have the agreed fee at €12million - Just under £10.5m.
Rennes are hunting a successor for Arnaud Kalimuendo, who looks set to replace Liverpool-bound Hugo Ekitike at Frankfurt, with the Bundesliga side having submitted an offer.
Hamza Igamane was high on Rennes' wanted list, although Rangers' asking price made them think twice. Record Sport revealed that Feyenoord are now willing to smash their transfer record to land the Moroccan.
Now the consensus in Romania is that Munteanu is their man and he could arrive in Brittany soon to seal the deal.
Meanwhile Dan Petrescu will hold talks with Celtic target Munteanu to see if he is ready to play for his Cluj side in Europe tomorrow.
Cluj are in Switzerland this week for a Europa League tie against Lugano. Munteanu has yet to start a game so far this season for Petrescu's side, as the transfer interest in him continues to intensify.
And former Chelsea star Petrescu - now in his fourth spell as manager of the club - will make a decision as to whether to play his star man in the European tie after talks with him.
He said: "I want to have a clarifying discussion with Louis.
"It's possible he'll play from the start or he might start as a sub.
"If he feels good, maybe he can start. You know how it is in football.
"But I want to say if he leaves tomorrow or this week, I wouldn't be upset.
"I understand the situation, the club understands, the player understands and I would be happy for him. "But at the same time, if he stays, I would be even happier."

Newcastle threatening to hijack Liverpool transfer amid ongoing Alexander Isak talks
Newcastle are eager to add more signings to the squad after a difficult window that has seen them miss out on a handful of players - but the Magpies are reportedly optimistic of securing Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi Newcastle are hoping to hijack Liverpool bid to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as the Reds also attempt to prise Alexander Isak away from St James' Park. The Magpies' preparations for the new 2025-26 season have been disrupted by talk over Isak's future after the player began pushing for a move to Liverpool. Isak has been clear with Newcastle that he wants to explore his options after a fantastic season that resulted in 27 Premier League goals and he failed to join his team-mates on their pre-season tour of Asia. Instead, he flew out to Spain to train on his own at the facilities of former club Real Sociedad to keep himself ticking over in case Liverpool did strike an agreement with Newcastle. But Liverpool's first bid of around £120m was rejected by the Magpies, who will hope to move on from the saga - at least temporarily - by securing some signings of their own. Club chiefs will hope to get one over the Reds by beating them to the signing of Guehi - and the Times are reporting that Newcastle are ready to resurrect their interest in the player who they failed to land last year after having three bids rejected - the highest offer being £65m. Newcastle don't want to spend more than £40m on the player, considering his contract is set to expire next summer and could even leave their move late into the window in order to get the best price, the report goes on. The report says Liverpool are still interested in Guehi but are also unwilling to splash the cash on him. Newcastle might have the advantage over the Reds considering they have already spent almost £300m and could potentially see that number rise if they sign Isak. It comes as Newcastle boss bids to bolster his side after adding just one major signing in Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest so far. He has suffered a difficult transfer window so far after Liverpool beat them to the signing of Hugo Ekitike. The Magpies are currently competing with Manchester United for the signature of RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko after submitting a £70m and Howe will be eager to secure at least one new signing before their season opener against Aston Villa on August 16. He will also be optimistic Isak will still be a Newcastle player by that time after admitting the situation was out of his control when asked about his future - though the player has returned to the club's training ground for showdown talks this week.

Russell Martin has insisted there will be more arrivals and departures at Rangers this summer following the loan signing of Mikey Moore from Tottenham Hotspur. The 17-year-old winger became the Ibrox club's eighth new recruit of the transfer window on Friday after putting pen to paper on a season-long loan deal and he could make his debut against Motherwell in Saturday's Premiership opener providing international clearance arrives in time. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Martin is overseeing a major rebuild as he looks to put his own stamp on a squad that finished 17 points behind Celtic last season with the backing of the club's new American owners. And he revealed that there is still plenty more business left to do with a month to go until the transfer deadline. Rangers head coach Russell Martin during a training session on Friday. (Photo by Alan Harvey / SNS Group) | SNS Group "We still need more players for sure, and we need to strengthen a couple of key areas," Martin told reporters at his pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to Fir Park. "Mikey helps as a lot because he gives us something we don't have. He gives us another option and real flexibility in the top line. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad I still think there will be players leaving and players joining. We have to be really willing and open for that change. The club has needed it now we have to be patient during it, and we are, to make sure we get the right ones in." One player who will not be joining the Rangers ranks is defender Conor Coady. The 32-year-old former England international had been linked with a move to Ibrox for much of the summer but he has instead completed a £2million switch from Leicester City to Wrexham. Martin indicated that Rangers will be looking to sign a left-back with Max Aarons - a more natural right-back - currently filling the position due to being preferred over both Jefte and Ridvan Yilmaz. "Max is not going to be the long-term option at left back but he's played there before and he's doing a good job for us," Martin explained. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad "The other guys have to do more to put themselves in the frame. They have to do more in terms of being really consistent day in, day out. Jefte has a lot of potential and some really good attributes, but he knows what we think of him and where he needs to improve to really help us on the pitch and help us win games of football. "Ridvan, we've had really good open and honest conversations. He is sizing up his options. He has a couple of people intersted in him and we'll wait and see what happens on that front." Rangers left-back Ridvan Yilmaz has been the subject of transfer interest. | SNS Group Martin stressed that Rangers are not in the position of needing to sell players before they can sign any more. "I don't think we need players to go out," he said. "The ownership group, Kevin [Thelwell, sporting director] and Patrick [Stewart, CEO] have been really good about it. We have a fair few players who have interest in them and who know their careers probably need to move on to play football, and we've still gone and done Mikey and Gassama and other players. By the end of window we definitely can't have them all in here but it's not a case of having to wait or we need them to go first." Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Asked whether he is confident he will have a squad that can compete for the title, Martin added: "We'll be really confident and hopefully be the end of the window we'll be really happy. "We have a squad that can compete now. We certainly have a starting team that can compete and a few around that. We just need some more depth in key areas and a few people that can help us. We're really happy with the way the squad is going. There's been a lot of change which is not always easy, and we're navigating that the best we can." Martin also provided an update on injured duo Thelo Aasgaard and Hamza Igamane confirming neither player will return in time for the trip to Motherwell.
