Delhi Police steps up security on Eid; social media to be monitored too
The Delhi Police has stepped up security arrangements across the national capital to maintain law and order and ensure peaceful celebration of Eid ul-Azha on Saturday, an official said.
To maintain law and order during festivities, elaborate deployments have been made in sensitive areas, with the Rapid Action Force (RAF), paramilitary forces, and local police teams mobilised.

Multiple check posts have been set up across Delhi, and electronic surveillance has been intensified to monitor suspicious activity.
A senior police officer said, "Strict vigilance is being maintained across the city. We are closely monitoring social media for any misinformation or attempts to incite communal tension. Action will be taken against violators as per law."

The officer added that open-air animal sacrifices, prayers in public spaces without permission, and the sacrifice of prohibited animals are not allowed during the festival.
"Foot patrolling, drone surveillance in sensitive zones, and enhanced night vigilance are part of our comprehensive safety strategy," the officer added.
The Delhi Traffic Police is also ensuring that there is a smooth flow of traffic and people do not violate norms during celebrations.

To foster communal harmony and coordination, police officials have conducted a series of Aman Committee meetings with local religious leaders and community members in various districts.
In East Delhi, Station House Officer (SHO) Pandav Nagar visited Kotla Idgah and held discussions with local Imams to ensure coordinated crowd management and security arrangements.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Abhishek Dhania confirmed that such meetings are being held across the city to streamline preparations.
Another senior officer noted, "Delhi Police and community leaders are working hand-in-hand to ensure that the Eid festivities are celebrated in a secure and harmonious environment."

People 'disappointed' with announcement of B'desh polls in April 2026: BNP
People are "disappointed" by Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus's announcement to hold elections in April 2026, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said on Saturday, asserting that April is not the "right time" to conduct polls. The party reiterated its demand for polls by December this year. "April is not the right time for polls in Bangladesh in any way, BNP Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told journalists. His statement came a day after Yunus, during a televised address to the nation on the eve of the Eid-ul-Adha festival, announced that national elections would be held in the first half of April next year. Yunus' announcement was followed by an urgent virtual meeting of the standing committee of former prime minister Khaleda Zia's BNP, presided over by the party's acting chairman and Zia's son Tarique Rahman from London. In a statement, the BNP said Yunus' address meant an unwarranted delay in arranging the election, adding that it ignored the nation's aspirations, causing people disappointment and anger. The meeting expressed anger at his choice of words in the speech, which crossed the limits of political decorum, the statement said. Yunus, who took charge after the ouster of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League regime in August last year, said the interim government's key responsibility was to hold a clean, peaceful, festive, and inclusive election. Yunus's announcement comes amid mounting pressure from the BNP and several other groups to hold the election by December. Man kills teen on Eid to ‘avenge son'
Roorkee: Eid celebrations turned into mourning for a family in Manglaur area near Roorkee after their 17-year-old son was brutally murdered by their 40-year-old neighbour on Saturday morning. The accused, a daily wager from Pathanpura locality, slit the boy's throat when the victim was returning home after offering prayers "to settle a personal score", police said on Saturday. Officials said that Riyasat Ahmed's son and the victim, Sahil Ahmed Malik, were friends and both studied in Class 9. On last year's Eid, they went to bathe in the Gangnahar canal when the accused's son was swept away by strong current. His body was recovered three days later from a nearby barrage. Since then, Riyasat believed that Sahil had intentionally pushed his son into the canal, causing his death. "The accused told us he deliberately chose the festive day to carry out the crime as his own son was killed by Sahil on the same day last year. We are probing the case from every possible angle," said SP (Rural) SC Suyal.
