Job creation has been minimal in SA since democracy, claims Solidarity

Eyewitness News12-06-2025
JOHANNESBURG - Minority lobby group, Solidarity, claims that job creation since 1994 has been minimal, largely due to Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) policies.
Solidarity, in collaboration with the Free Market Foundation (FMF), has released a new study outlining the costs associated with BBBEE compliance.
Their findings indicate that these policies have contributed to rising unemployment and have hindered significant economic growth since 1994.
Solidarity CEO Dirk Hermann argues that a complete overhaul of the BBBEE policy would be more beneficial for the country.
'Black Economic Empowerment does not address inequality. It increases as a result of the policy. The paradox is that inequality increases particularly in the black community as a result of a small group of elites, who are being radically enriched.'
Speaking to 702 , prominent businessman Saki Macozoma said BBBEE remains necessary for transformation.
'Empowering people who are previously disadvantaged is the right kind of thing. It may be that the terminology of Black Economic Empowerment is the one that creates the emotion. The fact of the matter is that we need to have the redress, and we have not done it to the extent that we should have.'

FlySafair confirms end of strike by some of its pilots

CAPE TOWN - FlySafair has confirmed that strike action by some of its pilots has ended. The airline said this follows signing a formal agreement between FlySafair management and the union Solidarity. FlySafair pilots had called for salary adjustments and an amended roster system with rest time and leave benefits. READ MORE: The agreement comes after several weeks of intensive engagement under the guidance of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA). FlySafair spokesperson Kirby Gordon said, "We are pleased to have reached a constructive resolution that allows us to move forward together. Returning to our full schedule will bring about much-needed capacity back to the market, which is essential to restoring fare equilibrium and making travel more affordable again for South Africans." SOLIDARITY CALLS ON FLYSAFAIR TO REVISIT LABOUR PRACTICES Union Solidarity has called on flySafair to review its labour practices after a 12-day strike by some of the airline's pilots. Solidarity said FlySafair's pilots have agreed to return to work after accepting salary increases of up to 6.9% over the next four years. The union said pilots will also receive one weekend off every six weeks, and nine weekends off per spokesperson, Helgard Cronjé, said there were no winners in the mediation process."While the agreement is an important step, there are still concerns that it only protects the most basic rights of the pilots. It is tragic that the employees needed to strike for 12 days to get a written agreement that protects only their basic rights." FlySafair said it's pleased to have reached a resolution for the airline to return to its full schedule.

Ramokgopa says US tariffs are not linked to South Africa's transformative policies

JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) believes the 30% tariffs imposed on South Africa by the United States have nothing to do with policies such as Black Economic Empowerment or the expropriation of land without compensation. Dr Kgosientso Ramokgopa spoke to journalists following deliberations by the ANC's national executive committee on issues pertaining to the country's economy in Germiston on Saturday. Ramokgopa has poured cold water over criticism that U.S. President Donald Trump's retaliatory tariffs might be linked to transformative policies being championed by the ANC in government. He says the tariffs aren't targeted at just South Africa. 'Over 90 countries are experiencing US tariff imposition, so South Africa is not isolated as a result, as some may argue, of our policies like BEE and expropriation. Some of them are historic and close allies to the US. So, we don't feel isolated,' said Ramokgopa. He says the ANC believes the government must do everything possible to preserve its relationship with the United States. America is South Africa's second-largest trade partner, and while attempts have been made—including an official visit by President Cyril Ramaphosa to put together a trade deal—the Americans have been non-responsive. Despite this, Ramokgopa says the channels of communication remain open. 'We presented before them; Minister Tau, in his official capacity, continues to engage. We are still to receive a response, so the rate at which we are able to resolve this is also a function of the response we are getting from the counterparty," he added.
