NDA set to grab majority: BJP state prez

Guwahati: Based on the current projections in view of the trend so far, the NDA is poised to secure a majority in the anchalik panchayats and zila parishads, signalling a decisive electoral mandate in the panchayat polls, said BJP's state president Dilip Saikia.He added that the trends as of now indicate a commanding lead for the candidates of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) across the state.
Saikia, who is also a parliamentarian from the state, described the groundswell of public support for the NDA as "extraordinary and unprecedented."He attributed the alliance's strong performance to the transformative governance under the leadership of PM Modi and CM Sarma. He said the people of Assam once again reposed their faith in the BJP-led coalition to sustain the momentum of inclusive and broad-based development across the state.The state president acknowledged the pivotal role played by senior party figures, including CM Sarma, Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal, and Pabitra Margherita, and allied party leaders and dedicated grassroots workers. "Their collective effort," he noted, "has contributed significantly in consolidating the alliance's electoral base in rural Assam," he added.Expressing heartfelt gratitude to the electorate, Saikia thanked voters for their overwhelming support, which, he noted, transcended political affiliations. He called the mandate a clear endorsement of the alliance's vision to strengthen grassroots democracy and accelerate rural progress. Reaffirming the BJP's commitment to the 'panchayati raj' system, he assured that every promise made in the party's Sankalp Patra (manifesto) would be implemented in a phased and time-bound manner.In the previous Panchayat elections held in 2018, the BJP secured victories in 212 Zila Parishads, while its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), won in 19. Similarly, BJP candidates triumphed in 1,025 Anchalik Panchayat member constituencies, with AGP candidates winning in 118 seats by defeating opposition contenders.

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Assembly Speaker Surama Padhy and several other dignitaries paid tributes to tribal icon Birsa Munda on his death anniversary on Monday. Remembering the former chief minister, Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, said her contribution to politics, Odia art and literature is unparalleled. The work she did for the progress of the State will always make her memorable, Patnaik wrote on X. The BJD MP, Sasmit Patra, said, 'On the birth anniversary of the former chief minister of Odisha, I pay profound tribute to Nandini Satpathy, a trailblazing stateswoman, fearless reformist and towering literary icon.' Her legacy continues to ignite generations with the courage to uphold justice, advance equality and empower the voiceless, Patra said. He argued that it is inappropriate for a railway station to bear the name of someone considered an enemy of the nation. According to a report in TOI, in his letter to the a letter to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, a copy of which was accessed by The Times of India, BJP MP Satish Gautam argued that the Daud Khan railway station holds no historical or geographical relevance to the region. He noted that there is neither a village by that name in the vicinity nor any known historical connection. Citing public sentiment, Gautam urged that the station be renamed after Maharana Pratap Singh, whom he described as a revered national figure with significant contributions to Indian history. He also pointed out that, as per local accounts, the station was established in 1894 and questioned the rationale for its current name, emphasising that no nearby Muslim settlement supports it. BJP gains ground in Assembly polls after Lok Sabha elections
NEW DELHI: In a display of electoral resilience, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has managed to regain significant ground in almost all the states that had Assembly elections after the general election 2024, in which BJP, for the first time since 2014, failed to match the single party majority notch. In Haryana, BJP had won only 5 of the state's 10 Lok Sabha seats (50%) in 2024 with 46.11% of the popular vote share. Bouncing back impressively in the Assembly polls held in October last year, it secured 48 out of 90 seats—over 53% of the assembly—with a lower vote share of 39.94%. The BJP's ability to convert votes efficiently into seats enabled this turnaround despite the drop in popular support. A similar pattern unfolded in Maharashtra, where the BJP-NDA alliance suffered considerable setbacks during the Lok Sabha polls, managing to win only 17 of 48 seats (35.42%), with BJP alone bagging just 9 seats and polling 26.18% of the vote. Yet in the state assembly elections held later, the BJP-led NDA not only expanded its seat share to 132 of 288 (45.83%) but also saw a marginal increase in vote share to 26.77%.
