Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is on a book tour for his recently released memoir, Source Code: My Beginnings. He made a stop on The Tonight Show and shared some of his thoughts on how AI will transform society in the future.
Fallon asked Gates about the pros and cons of AI on Tuesday, and the Microsoft co-founder's answer gave the show host some pause after asking if humans will no longer be needed. Gates went on to explain that humans won't be used for "most things" as AI becomes more incorporated into everyday life.
"Well, we'll decide," Gates said. "You know, like baseball. We won't want to watch computers play baseball. So there'll be some things that we reserve for ourselves, but in terms of making things and moving things and growing food, over time, those will be basically solved problems."
That answer might have been a bit of a downer for some people, especially with the rising concerns of AI taking away jobs, which is happening already according to one study from last year. Gates did want to emphasize that once AI becomes commonplace, it will solve a variety of issues.
"The era that we're just starting is that intelligence is rare," Gates said. "And with A.I., over the next decade that will become free. Great medical advice, great tutoring. And it's kind of profound because it solves all these specific problems, like we don't have enough doctors or, you know, mental health professionals, but it brings with it kind of so much change."
He also gave some insight into how he thinks work should change.
"You know, what will jobs be like," he asked "Should we, you know, just work like 2 or 3 days a week? I love the way it'll drive innovation forward, but I think it's a little bit unknown. Will we be able to shape it? And so, legitimately, people are like, 'Wow, this is -- this is a bit scary."It's completely new territory.'"
The just over 10-minute interview didn't focus entirely on AI. Fallon spoke to Gates about his beginnings with Microsoft and how people laughed at him for saying there would be a computer on everyone's desk in the future. He also brought up how Steve Jobs said he didn't know about design and should take acid, to which he said that he did take LSD. He went on to explain that when he tripped on acid, it had him thinking about program coding and not design.
Gates stepped down from his role as Microsoft CEO in 2000 and then left the company's board in 2020 to focus more on his philanthropy, but reports claim that he still has an influence within the company. Even though he's not leading Microsoft's push into AI, a blog post of his from 2023 discussed the topic of "AI agents," which he had first written about in his 1995 book, The Road Ahead. The post also clarified that Clippy, the Microsoft Office paperclip assistant, was a bot and not an agent.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang had similar opinions as Gates on the future of AI in a recent interview, saying "A future where you're surrounded by robots is for certain."
"Everything that moves will be robotic someday, and it will be soon," Huang said in a recent episode of Cleo Abram's Huge Conversations. "And every car is going to be robotic. Humanoid robots, the technology necessary to make it possible, is just around the corner."
Nvidia is currently the world's top producer of AI chips.

NVIDIA (NVDA) Gets Buy Rating as AI Data Center Demand Surges Past $50 Billion

NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) is one of the 10 AI Stocks on Wall Street's Radar. One of the most notable analyst calls on Tuesday, June 10, was for NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA). Bank of America reiterated the stock as 'Buy,' stating that data center demand trends remain robust for Nvidia. 'Developing AI infrastructure leveraging local datasets and workforces is a rapidly growing global phenomenon and we expect it to contribute $50bn+ annually or 10%+ of long-term AI addressable market.' A powerful aerial view of the company's data center, exemplifying the digital services and informatics being offered. In other latest news, Nvidia Corporation and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise said on Tuesday that they are partnering with the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre to build a new supercomputer using Nvidia's next-generation chips. While we acknowledge the potential of NVDA as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk. General Hospital spoilers: Willow loses custody, and Drew makes a bold move to keep her under his influence?

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It looks like General Hospital fans won't have to wait too long for the verdict of Michael (Rory Gibson) and Willow's (Katelyn MacMullen) custody hearing, as it's been teased that the judge will reach a decision during the week of June 9. Call it wishful thinking, but we suspect the moment the court is dismissed for the final time in this case, Michael will be granted full custody of Wiley (Viron Weaver) and Amelia (Sequoia & Serenity Mork Macko). Whether it be because the judge truly sees the harm in the kids being raised near Drew (Cameron Mathison) or someone paid the judge to sway things in Michael's favor, we can't help but hope the young children are placed with their father as Willow continues to fall for Drew's scheming and tricks. If our hunch proves correct, we sadly think Drew will use the loss as an opportunity to further sink his manipulative hooks into Willow. As we see it, Drew may try to make one of two bold moves that would leave us shaking our heads in disgust (we already find the character repulsive). Our first guess is that Drew might offer Willow a new family as a 'consolation prize.' After he tries to reassure her that the judge got the decision wrong and he'll use all his power to make sure a reversal is made on the custody ruling, Drew might propose that he and Willow get married, she adopt Scout (Cosette Abinante) and they get started on having kids of their own. While some would be repulsed by the suggestion of trying to start an instant new family right away that doesn't include their own children, we can't say Willow would feel that way. Lately, everything Drew says registers as right in her mind. If this isn't the move Drew makes, we suspect he could just suggest that Willow pick up and move with him to Washington, DC, leaving Port Charles behind. During the hearing, it was revealed that he bought property there (which he should have, considering he's a congressman), so he may want Willow to move with him and Scout. Which would effectively isolate her from Nina (Cynthia Watros) as well. Now Willow may initially resist an idea that puts distance between her and her children, but again, Drew has become very good at convincing her to do whatever he wants. He may say it's good for them to relocate as they work to figure out how to get her kids, and she might agree. Of course, regardless of what Drew proposes, we have to think Willow will finally wake up to the real Drew Cain one of these days. Heck, maybe Nina finally reveals all to make Willow realize that she's destroyed her life for a selfish and loathsome human being. Or perhaps the bombshell drops that Willow has been dating Shiloh (Coby Ryan McLaughlin) this whole time as he pretends to be Drew. Having said all of that, we have to wonder how Willow changes her perception in Port Charles and among General Hospital fans at home. Right now, Drew may be the most disliked man in all of daytime, but she doesn't exactly have a bountiful fan club. New episodes of General Hospital air on weekdays on ABC. If you miss an episode, you can catch up on Hulu.

Apple WWDC underwhelms fans in a crucial upgrade

Do you know about Asch conformity experiments? Solomon Asch performed them in the 1950s. He invited individuals into the lab and asked them to judge the length of a line. He also placed 6 actors in the same room who were assigned to give the wrong answers so that the ignorant subject could hear them before he provided his own answer. On average, 35% of the subjects followed the opinions of the actors even if their answer was obviously wrong. That is horrifying. What is even worse is that the study has been replicated numerous times. Now, imagine a scenario in which the actors are given money immediately after giving the wrong answer, and the subject can see that too. What would be the percentage of subjects that gave the wrong answer then? Related: Google resolves major privacy issue That study hasn't been done, but I think we are witnessing something similar unfolding in the tech space. Marketing is everything. If artificial intelligence were called "pattern matching and transformation," it would not sound so cool, would it? Alas, there is precisely zero intelligence in AI. It is just pattern matching and transformation. This is why it hallucinates so much. The farther away from its training data the query you give to the AI is, the crazier the reply you'll get. Public companies don't do marketing just for consumers; they also need to attract investors. And when everyone around you starts hyping AI to attract investors, you may find yourself in a dilemma - is it OK to promise something you probably can't deliver? Apple (AAPL) seems stuck in this dilemma but also faces significant pressures outside Trump's threat of a 25% tariff on iPhones not manufactured in the U.S. put Apple under pressure. The company expects tariffs to add $900 million to its costs for the current quarter. I've already written why large language models can't become sentient. But Apple can't afford to say that. They carefully dance around it by occasionally releasing a research paper on AI's limitations, but that usually looks like a jab at the competition. The company's management probably feels like a person in Asch's experiment, except that the actors are the competitors. Rivals promise stuff from science fiction, but that is still attracting investors. Chaos created by unrealistic marketing is real. Microsoft recently invested in an AI company that went bankrupt. The company had no AI but a huge number of humans doing the work. They killed this project after just one week. It looks like AI companies are playing a game of telephone on the inside, and that is how that project got greenlit. The company can't afford the luxury of delivering subpar products. In a world full of people with crippled attention spans from watching TikTok and YouTube shorts, Apple delivered an hour and a half of pure boredom. I don't have a problem watching long informative videos, but this one wasn't that. Thank you, YouTube, for the video speed settings-a lifesaver. Apple has veered off course due to pressure. Their new design language, Liquid Glass, isn't original. Windows Aero was trendy in 2006. The Linux desktop environment KDE Plasma has featured numerous transparent/glass themes over the last 17 years. Related: Nvidia's latest project may supercharge quantum computing Yes, Apple did it with more polish. But transparency and monochrome icons ruin accessibility. They are cool-looking only if you are a child. You don't have time for distractions if you have work to do. As for the big AI reveal that some people were hoping for, there wasn't one. The best feature they presented was a call translator. I am not sure how many people need it, but those who do will greatly appreciate it. Long-time fund manager Chris Versace, wrote on TheStreet Pro "It is hard to disagree, at least for now, that Apple is taking, as some have called it, a "gap year" on Apple Intelligence, but one of the great advantages the company has is its developer community and that's the core audience for WWDC." Apple used to have a slogan, "Think different." Well, if the company thinks differently, it ain't showing it.
