GST revamp! Over 40 company stocks set to gain from rate cuts, say experts– check full list of potential beneficiaries
Representative image Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's Independence Day announcement regarding India's GST restructuring by Diwali has significantly impacted Dalal Street, with over 40 stocks across various sectors identified as potential beneficiaries. As the stock markets marked the opening for the week on Monday, it witnessed substantial gains across automotive, financial, real estate, consumer and cement sectors as investors responded to what analysts consider the most significant indirect tax reform since 2017. The proposed GST reforms aim to simplify the current four-tier structure into two primary rates - 5% and 18%, excluding sin goods. According to market projections, 99% of goods in the 12% category will shift to 5%, whilst 90% of items in the 28% bracket will move to 18%. "Here too, households can expect sizable savings, owing to some higher-ticket consumption items bracketed in the 28% tier. The proposals and finer details are likely to be approved by the GST Council in early 3QFY26. The Finance Ministry has indicated Rs 50,000 crore of tax revenue impact, which appears manageable," Motilal Oswal said in a research note, a squoted by ET. The restructuring aims to reduce retail prices by 4-5%, providing relief to households whilst encouraging consumption across categories. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Could Be the Best Time to Trade Gold in 5 Years IC Markets Learn More Undo The automotive sector stands to gain significantly, with Jefferies identifying two-wheelers, small cars and commercial vehicles as primary beneficiaries from the proposed 28% to 18% rate reduction. "All the listed 2W OEMs – Bajaj, Hero, TVS and Eicher – should be beneficiaries of this cut," Jefferies noted. In the cement sector, the proposed rate reduction from 28% to 18% could result in a government revenue impact of Rs 200-250 billion. "A key sentiment positive for the sector; lower GST from 28% to 18% can lead to 7.5%/8% lower prices," Motilal Oswal stated. Consumer durables, particularly air conditioners, could benefit from rate reductions. Meanwhile, banking sector advantages include increased consumption and credit demand, with ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and IDFC First Bank positioned as key beneficiaries. Emkay Global anticipated these reforms will strengthen consumption over capital expenditure, potentially reducing CPI inflation by 50-60 basis points annually. However, they caution that the overall impact depends on how the government addresses the revenue deficit. Big GST cuts ahead: Will small cars, insurance get cheaper?
India is considering major tax reform that could lower Goods and Services Tax (GST) on small cars and insurance premiums. According to a government source, the proposal suggests reducing GST on small petrol and diesel cars to 18% from the current 28%, reported Reuters. The move is part of a wider set of changes aimed at boosting consumption and simplifying the tax on health and life insurance premiums may also be reduced, possibly to 5% or even zero, down from the current 18%, the source approved, the tax cuts are likely to be announced before Diwali, in October, as that is usually the country's busiest shopping season. Vivek Jalan, Partner Tax Connect Advisory Services LLP, said, 'A massive exercise for Rate Rationalisation is underway and a Group of Ministers (GoM) is reviewing the comprehensive Rate Rationalisation program. It is learnt that the GoM has not submitted its report as of now and are taking into consideration all representations of industry associations.''It is expected that this Diwali items of mass consumption by common man will be brought into the lower slab of 5% GST. For example small sachets of Rs. 10 or less supplied by FMCG players may be considered to be brought under the lower tax bracket of 5%,' he CAR SEGMENT COULD GET A BOOSTSales of small cars have slowed over the last few years as many buyers have shifted towards larger, feature-rich SUVs. Small cars, those with engine capacity below 1200cc (petrol) and 1500cc (diesel), and not exceeding 4 metres in length, accounted for one-third of all passenger vehicles sold last fiscal year, compared to almost half before COVID.A lower tax rate is expected to benefit major automakers, especially Maruti Suzuki, which has historically dominated this segment. Cars such as the Alto, Dzire and Wagon-R make up nearly half of Maruti's sales. He added that while the proposals are positive, it will be important to see whether the rate cuts actually translate into lower prices for further added, 'While news reports suggest that the goods and services currently covered 12% slab would be transferred to 5% rate (for all the goods and services of essential consumption) and balance in 18%, it would also be important to ensure that such rate reduction results in effective reduction in prices of the products.'NEW TWO-RATE STRUCTURE BEING DISCUSSEDadvertisementIndia is also considering replacing the current four-rate GST structure (5%, 12%, 18% and 28%) with just two slabs — 5% and 18%. The final decision will be taken by the GST Council by October. The Council is chaired by the Union Finance Minister and includes representatives from all and businesses are now waiting for further clarity, which is expected in the coming weeks, as the government finalises what could be the biggest overhaul of GST since its launch in 2017.- EndsTune InMust Watch
