JOHOR BAHRU - Two of the five police personnel involved in this morning's helicopter crash during the Multilateral Nuclear Security Detection Exercise (MITSATOM 2025) in Gelang Patah are reported to be in critical condition and require respiratory assistance.
Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail said the other three victims are in stable condition and being treated at Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) in Johor Bahru. He said all five received immediate medical attention from specialist doctors at the hospital shortly after the incident.
"Alhamdulillah, with the help and expertise of the specialists at HSA, I believe we can provide them with the best possible treatment. We pray for their recovery and hope they can return to duty as usual, God willing,' he told Bernama when met at HSA.
According to him, three of the victims are members of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) Air Wing Unit, while the other two are attached to the Tanjung Kupang police station.
Commenting on claims that the helicopter was an ageing asset, Mohd Khalid said age is not a major factor if proper maintenance is carried out.
"Being old is not a problem. What matters is that maintenance is done well. What happened was something beyond our control,' he said.
Mohd Khalid said police will look after the welfare of all the personnel involved and their families.
The AS355N helicopter belonging to PDRM crashed into the waters near the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency jetty during an honour flypast held as part of the MITSATOM 2025 exercise involving Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Singapore.
In a statement, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) said the helicopter with registration number 9M-PHG had departed from Tanjung Kupang police station at 9.51 am with five people on board, including the pilot.
CAAM said further investigation will be conducted by the Air Accident Investigation Bureau under the Ministry of Transport in accordance with Part XXVI Civil Aviation Regulations 2016. - BERNAMA

KUALA LUMPUR, July 17 — A Myanmar national studying at a private university in Kuala Lumpur has reportedly been confirmed dead after falling from the 26th floor of a condominium in Cheras, police said. According to Free Malaysia Today, Cheras district police chief Assistant Commissioner Aidil Bolhassan said the 20-year-old student, Sithu Hpone Maw, sustained injuries consistent with a fall, based on a post-mortem examination. Region Three Marine Police Commander Asst Comm Zulafendy Hassan said officers spotted a three-tonne lorry around 4am near Chabang Empat, heading to Kampung Ana, Tumpat. The driver ignored orders to stop and tried to escape, he said, adding that two cars believed to be used by "tontos" tried to block the police and almost hit an officer on a motorcycle. Police fired at the tyres of the lorry and the tonto vehicles, but the suspects kept going, he added. The chase lasted 30 minutes before the lorry crashed into a parking barrier in Pasir Mas, and the driver ran off on foot. Police found 1.14 million cigarettes, believed to have been smuggled into the country, inside the lorry. ACP Zulafendy said the seizure was worth about RM2.3mil, including tax, and the case was being investigated under the Customs Act 1967 and the Penal Code. He also urged the public to report border crimes by calling 09-5137726 or by e-mail to gerakanw3@ – Bernama

Kelantan sees 78% surge in contraband seizures with stricter border control

KOTA BHARU: The value of seized contraband in Kelantan jumped by nearly 78% in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period last year, thanks to stricter border enforcement and coordinated operations. State police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat revealed that RM171.5 million worth of illegal goods were confiscated from January to June, a sharp increase from RM37.2 million in 2023. He credited the success to the closure of border crossings in December 2024 and improved collaboration between state and federal agencies. 'This achievement reflects the strong synergy among enforcement teams, leading to better security control,' Mohd Yusoff said during the Kelantan Police Contingent's monthly assembly. The police chief stressed that the results were not accidental but the outcome of strategic planning and teamwork. He urged agencies to maintain cooperation to further curb smuggling. 'Our goal is not just higher seizure numbers but protecting Kelantan's sovereignty and public safety,' he added. Mohd Yusoff also highlighted the need for digital tools like AI to boost enforcement efficiency. He reminded officers to uphold discipline and integrity, calling them the foundation of public trust in the police force. 'Our duty is a serious responsibility to the nation, not just words,' he said. - Bernama
