Blue Jays beef up bullpen, add versatility in getting Varland and France from Twins

The
Blue Jays
weren't able to land a big-name closer at this year's trade deadline but they did acquire a hard-throwing right-hander who will slot into the back end of their bullpen.
With minutes to spare before Thursday's 6 p.m. ET cut-off,
general manager Ross Atkins
acquired Louis Varland and utilityman Ty France in a deal with the Minnesota Twins. Varland joins the recently acquired
Seranthony Dominguez
as part of the Jays' new-look bullpen.
Earlier in the day, a slew of big arms went off the market. The New York Mets acquired Ryan Helsley from St. Louis, the New York Yankees added David Bednar from Pittsburgh, and Gavin Lux went from the Twins to Tampa Bay. The night before, the Twins sent
Jhoan Duran
to Philadelphia.
The Jays reportedly were interested in everyone on that list. After missing out, they went searching for alternatives. Enter Varland, who isn't nearly as well known despite throwing 98 m.p.h. with an impressive 2.02 ERA in 49 innings for the Twins. The 27-year-old has yet to hit arbitration and won't reach free agency until at least 2030.
'He has as good of a fastball as you can find and as good as a curveball as you can find, with a very effective cutter,' Atkins said. 'He's extremely aggressive, he's coming after you and that's attractive to us. He immediately impacts our bullpen in a significant way, in addition to Seranthony … the impact is exactly what we were looking for.'
Bieber, rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, has the talent to become the ace Toronto needs. He
France will take the spot of Will Wagner on the active roster. Wagner was traded to San Diego on Thursday in exchange for Double-A catcher Brandon Valenzuela. The 24-year-old Valenzuela is a strong defender who doesn't offer much with the bat and will instead provide depth in the minors.
Jays fans might remember France from his days with Seattle. He was an all-star on the 2022 team that swept the Jays in the wild-card series. His career took a nose dive after that and this season he was batting .251 with a below-average .678 on-base plus slugging percentage in 101 games.
France's splits against lefties and righties are about the same, so he isn't the ideal platoon partner the Jays were expected to add, but he does offer versatility with an ability to play first, third and a bit of second. He signed a one-year, $1 million (U.S.) deal during the off-season and will be a free agent at the end of the year.
'A good offensive player who will get significant playing time against left-handed pitching,' Atkins said. 'We're not going to limit him to that, but he can cover us well at first base, has some versatility beyond that. Excited about that fit of adding a right-handed bat to our 26-man (roster).'
The Jays made their first deal of Trade Deadline Week, acquiring big-armed reliever Seranthony
To acquire Varland, and to a lesser extent France, the Jays parted with Kendry Rojas, who was ranked their No. 6 prospect by MLB Pipeline. Rojas recently had been promoted to Triple-A Buffalo and had a 3.46 ERA in 11 appearances this season across four levels. The 22-year-old could be ready for the majors as soon as 2026.
The Jays also sent
Alan Roden
to the Twins as part of the deal. Roden received a lot of hype during this year's spring training and cracked the opening-day roster, but he struggled in the majors. The 25-year-old hit just .203 with seven extra-base hits in 43 games for the Jays.

Inter Milan line up move for Monaco winger Akliouche

Inter Milan are considering a move to sign AS Monaco winger Maghnes Akliouche this summer, according to L'Equipe. With Ademola Lookman's deal hanging in the balance, the Nerazzurri have started looking for alternatives. Akliouche has caught Inter's attention with his brilliant goal against the Italian giants in the recent friendly fixture. The French forward is one of Europe's hottest properties, and the Ligue 1 giants are open to selling him due to the growing interest in the player. However, the Principality Club have outlined a massive price tag worth €70 million for Akliouche and are not willing to budge from it. Inter will face competition from Bayer Leverkusen, who have positioned themselves as a top candidate to get their hands on Akliouche. Having filled their coffers with the sales of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Firmpong and Granit Xhaka, the German giants are ready to meet Akliouche's valuation. The 23-year-old burst onto the scene after bagging seven goals and 12 assists last season, punctuated by incredible performances in the Champions League and Ligue 1. Meanwhile, Inter haven't completely given up the pursuit of Lookman and are finding ways to reach an agreement with Atalanta. They have seen an offer worth €45 million declined by La Dea, who are holding out for €50 million. The Nigerian winger, for his part, hasn't joined Atalanta's training in an attempt to secure a move to San Siro. Akliouche has all the tools to succeed at Inter, but his hefty valuation makes him far from an ideal target for the Serie A giants. The Nerazzurri have shortlisted Manchester United's Jadon Sancho and Chelsea's Christopher Nkunku as alternative options to reinforce their attack.

Try it free Gerrit Cole took a significant step Monday in his rehabilitation from Tommy John surgery. The 2023 Cy Young Award winner and six-time All-Star began his throwing program before the Yankees started a three-game series against the Twins with a 6-2 victory. It was 20 pitches off flat ground. 'It felt really good today. I was fairly accurate and had a good time,' Cole said. 'It's a big one, first day throwing. Been building up to it for a few weeks, so it's nice to get outside and get it accomplished and have it go well.' Cole, 34, underwent surgery March 11 to repair a torn ligament in his right elbow after appearing in two spring training games. The operation included an internal brace in the hope of speeding up his recovery. Cole said the next big step is getting on the mound. New York Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole (45) watches the Old Timers play before the game when the New York Yankees played the Houston Astros Saturday, August 9, 2025 at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NY. Robert Sabo for NY Post 'Excited for him. He's done a good job with rehab,' manager Aaron Boone said. 'This is one of those cool markers along the way that is significant to hit.' CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND YANKEES STATS Pitchers Fernando Cruz (left oblique strain) and Ryan Yarbrough (right oblique strain) are scheduled to begin rehabilitation assignments Thursday with Double-A Somerset. Boone said the plan for Cruz, a high-leverage right-handed reliever, is to throw Thursday, Sunday and Tuesday before potentially rejoining the Yankees. Out since late June, Cruz threw a 19-pitch live batting practice session Sunday. There is more uncertainty with Yarbrough, who has made eight starts for the Yankees and could be an option for the rotation. JASON SZENES/NY POST 'It just depends how much we want to build him up,' Boone said. 'Do we grab him? Do we keep building him out? We'll see what we're dealing with here, how he's doing.' Yarbrough also threw a live BP session Sunday. Aaron Judge won't appear in the outfield in the series against the Twins, Boone said, but he could be out there shortly after the next three games. Dating back to 2002, the Yankees are 107-42 against the Twins during the regular season, the best record by any team against another in its own league over that time. Counting the postseason, the Yankees are 123-44 against Minnesota since 2002. They also have won seven straight over the Twins. – Additional reporting by Andrew Crane

Minnesota Twins reinstate Byron Buxton from injured list to start series against Yankees

Byron Buxton homered in his return from the 10-day injured list on Monday night against the New York Yankees after the All-Star center fielder missed 13 games with inflammation in his left rib cage. Buxton was sidelined just before the Twins tore down their roster ahead of the trade deadline. He was batting .282 with 68 runs, 23 homers, 59 RBIs and a .905 OPS in 85 games when he went on the IL, all team-leading totals and averages among players with a qualifying amount of at-bats. Buxton homered on a sweeper from Will Warren in the sixth inning of a 6-2 loss. He went 1 for 4 with three strikeouts. "It's good," Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. "He took some good-looking swings for the most part and connected on one of them. It was good to have him back in the lineup. He always does something good for the team." Buxton batted leadoff in his first action since July 26 against Washington. The Twins went 6-7 in his absence, though they entered Monday coming off series victories over Detroit and Kansas City. "Energetically, it's itching to get back," Buxton said before the game. "I've been on the bench seeing them take the extra base, stealing bases. It's fun. We're a young group now even younger." The Twins sent outfielder Carson McCusker to Triple-A St. Paul to make room for Buxton, who has stolen 17 bases in 17 attempts. Despite the rib cage issue and a concussion that cost him time earlier, Buxton has been as healthy as he has in several seasons. He's on pace for the second-most games in his 11-year major league career, behind the 140 games he played in in 2017.
