Sharjah cuts traffic fatalities by 24% amid ongoing safety campaigns
This success highlights the effectiveness of their proactive strategies in enhancing road safety and preventing accidents.
The Traffic and Patrols Department, in collaboration with the Security Media Department, conducted 12 targeted campaigns against dangerous driving behaviours, including:
Distracted driving
Improper parking
Jaywalking
Speeding
Unsafe motorcycle use
Sharjah traffic safety
These programs reached nearly 905,895 individuals across the emirate.
Additionally, the Traffic and Patrols Department supported road safety by securing 272 events and activities.
They also provided traffic assistance for 1,976 maintenance and development projects on roads and infrastructure, improving traffic flow and boosting overall safety readiness.
Brigadier General Mohammed Alai Al Naqbi, Director of the Traffic and Patrol Department, attributed these positive results to community engagement and increased public awareness and compliance.
He thanked the public for their cooperation, emphasising that these achievements reflect Sharjah Police's vision to enhance road security through integrated efforts in prevention, awareness, and control, ultimately aiming to protect lives and improve traffic safety.

A key milestone in Dubai Municipality's digital transformation efforts, the launch of 'Eltizam' reflects the city's broader vision of fostering shared responsibility between officials and the community to protect urban aesthetics, public health, and environmental sustainability. Through the app, authorised users can take photos of violations, automatically capture their location, add contextual notes, and record breaches of cleanliness regulations in real time. The initiative is rooted in Dubai Law No. (19) of 2024, which regulates judicial officer status in the Emirate and aims to ensure compliance, legal clarity, and enhanced community participation. Targeting eight key violations The first phase of 'Eltizam' focuses on eight public cleanliness violations, categorised as negative behaviours that distort the city's image. These include: • Spitting in public areas • Disposing of chewing gum improperly • Littering in public spaces • Dumping organic or general waste into the sea, beaches, creeks, or ports • Draining vehicle wash water in non-designated areas • Lighting fires or barbecuing in unauthorised places • Posting flyers, advertisements, or printed materials that deface public areas • Failing to remove animal waste from public spaces By digitising the enforcement process and equipping judicial officers with smart tools, 'Eltizam' represents a shift towards proactive monitoring and greater transparency in maintaining the city's visual and environmental standards. UN chief puts Israel 'on notice' over sexual violence by armed forces
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has placed Israel"on notice" for possible inclusion in the UN's "blacklist" of countries and groups suspected of committing sexual violence in armed conflict, a letter posted by Israel's ambassador to the body showed. In his letter to Ambassador Danny Danon, Mr Guterres said he was "gravely concerned" about reports of violations against Palestinians by the Israeli military and security forces in several prisons, a detention centre and a military base. The UN chief said Israel could be listed as abusers in his next report on sexual violence in conflict "due to significant concerns of patterns of certain forms of sexual violence that have been consistently documented by the United Nations". 'Cases documented by the United Nations indicate patterns of sexual violence such as genital violence, prolonged forced nudity and repeated strip searches conducted in an abusive and degrading manner,' Mr Guterres said. Israel has denied access to UN monitors and Mr Guterres said this made it difficult to make a "definitive determination" about the patterns, trends and use of sexual violence by Israeli forces. He called on the Israeli government to take the necessary measures to end all acts of sexual violence and allow investigations. In March, UN-backed human rights groups accused Israel of sexual and gender-based violence. The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory documented violations and accused Israeli forces of rape and sexual violence against Palestinian detainees. Last year, the Israeli army said it had detained nine soldiers over the alleged sexual abuse of a Palestinian detainee at the notorious Sde Teiman prison. At the time, Israeli media published a video appearing to show soldiers sexually assaulting a male prisoner, with the US State Department describing it as "horrific". Mr Danon dismissed the concerns as baseless accusations. "The UN must focus on the shocking war crimes and sexual violence of Hamas and the release of all hostages. Israel will not shy away from protecting its citizens and will continue to act in accordance with international law," Mr Danon said. Hamas was also listed in the report as a group "credibly suspected of committing or being responsible for patterns of rape or other forms of sexual violence" in armed conflict. 'We categorically reject all these allegations," senior Hamas official Basem Naim told Reuters. The inclusion of the group comes after recently published reports documenting alleged sexual violence during the October 7, 2023 attack and against hostages in captivity. Reuters reported that Mr Guterres had also issued a similar warning to Russia. The UN chief wrote that he was "gravely concerned about credible information of violations by Russian armed and security forces and affiliated armed groups" primarily against Ukrainian prisoners of war, in 50 official and 22 unofficial detention facilities in Ukraine and Russia.

Dubai Customs seizes over 6 million fake cigarettes in 35-tonne bust
Dubai Customs has seized over 35 tonnes of counterfeit, smuggled, and non-compliant goods over the course of three months since the start of 2025. In a tweet on Tuesday, Dubai Customs said that this was the "largest operation of its kind since the start of 2025" and took place across the air cargo centres of the city. The authority, in the campaign, recorded more than 12 million smuggled cigarettes, 6.7 million counterfeit cigarettes, 37,110 cosmetics that do not conform to terms and conditions, 3,632 undeclared electronic parts and 10,520 counterfeit items of international brands. In 2024, Dubai Customs recorded 54 seizures involving 10.8 million counterfeit items, as part of its efforts to protect intellectual property rights. This campaign is part of the authority's continuous efforts to safeguard the nation's borders, combat all forms of smuggling and commercial fraud, and protect the health, safety, and economic interests of the community.
