Sharjah cuts traffic fatalities by 24% amid ongoing safety campaigns
Sharjah Police significantly reduced traffic accident fatalities by 24 per cent in 2024 compared to 2023, achieving a rate of 1.76 deaths per 100,000 people.
This success highlights the effectiveness of their proactive strategies in enhancing road safety and preventing accidents.
The Traffic and Patrols Department, in collaboration with the Security Media Department, conducted 12 targeted campaigns against dangerous driving behaviours, including:
Distracted driving
Improper parking
Jaywalking
Speeding
Unsafe motorcycle use
Sharjah traffic safety
These programs reached nearly 905,895 individuals across the emirate.
Additionally, the Traffic and Patrols Department supported road safety by securing 272 events and activities.
They also provided traffic assistance for 1,976 maintenance and development projects on roads and infrastructure, improving traffic flow and boosting overall safety readiness.
Brigadier General Mohammed Alai Al Naqbi, Director of the Traffic and Patrol Department, attributed these positive results to community engagement and increased public awareness and compliance.
He thanked the public for their cooperation, emphasising that these achievements reflect Sharjah Police's vision to enhance road security through integrated efforts in prevention, awareness, and control, ultimately aiming to protect lives and improve traffic safety.

Dubai: Gang sending fake links to steal bank details, scam residents arrested
A gang involved in luring and scamming victims through fake links and pretending to be well-known organisations, including restaurants, delivery companies, and offering promotional deals, has been arrested by the Dubai Police. According to authorities, the cybercriminals operated by sending SMS messages, emails and online links that appeared to come from trusted companies. Dubai Police revealed that the scammers exploited the names of popular organisations to build trust and legitimacy. The genuine-looking links and information would deceive victims into entering banking information. 'Once a victim clicks on the link and enters their banking information, the gang uses that data to withdraw funds,' they added. Specialised teams from the Anti-Fraud Centre of Dubai Police worked in collaboration with other relevant authorities, analysed the structure of these fraudulent messages and tracked suspicious online activity. The coordinated efforts led to the identification and arrest of the gang members and the seizure of electronic tools used in the crimes. Dubai Police warned the public to be cautious when receiving links from unverified sources, even if they appear to come from reputable names. The community is urged to report suspicious links at the nearest police station or through the 'Police Eye' feature on the Dubai Police App and the eCrime platform.

Saudi Arabia arrested over 9,600 last week in residency and labour operations
Saudi Arabia arrested more than 9,600 people in the past week as it looks to stop residency, labour and security breaches. The inspection campaigns carried out between June 5 and June 11 in all regions of the Kingdom, to check compliance with residency, work and border security regulations, saw 9,639 violations recorded, including: 5,625 of residency 2,797 of border security 1,217 of labour laws Saudi residency, labour and security arrests 1,117 individuals were apprehended attempting to cross the border into the Kingdom illegally, of whom 28 per cent were Yemenis and 72 per cent Ethiopians. 35 people were arrested for attempting to leave the Kingdom illegally. 10 people involved in transporting, sheltering, and employing violators were arrested. A total of 14,402 expatriates (13,364 men and 1,038 women) are currently undergoing procedures for enforcing regulations. 8,630 people were detained for violating laws and instructed to contact their countries' embassies or consulates to obtain proper travel documentation; 840 were told to make booking arrangements for their departure, and 7,657 were repatriated. The Ministry of Interior has warned that any person who facilitates the illegal entry of individuals into the Kingdom, transports them on its territory, provides them with shelter or any other assistance or service may be penalised with up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to SR1m ($267,000), and that the vehicles used for transport or houses used for shelter may be confiscated. The ministry stressed that such acts are major crimes that warrant arrest. It also urges people to report any violations by calling 911 in the Makkah, Riyadh, and Eastern regions, and 999 and 996 in the rest of Saudi Arabia.

Dubai: Two men killed in dispute at petrol station, 11 arrested
The Dubai Public Prosecution is investigating an isolated incident involving two Uzbek nationals who lost their lives during a personal dispute between two groups at a petrol station in Dubai in April. The altercation, reportedly the result of an old disagreement, occurred when the victims arrived to inflate their vehicle's tyres. A police officer who happened to be nearby witnessed the incident and immediately alerted the authorities. Preliminary investigations revealed that two groups arrived at the station in separate vehicles. One of the victims had just stepped out of a red Mercedes to check the tyres when he was approached and assaulted by a group of men. The second victim, meanwhile, attempted to flee but was caught shortly after by another group. Identified through CCTV Dubai Police reached the site promptly, secured the area, and collected items left behind by those involved. CCTV footage and witness statements helped the authorities piece together the sequence of events and identify the individuals connected to the case. Following a swift investigation, the police arrested all 11 individuals involved, including the primary suspects, at a hotel in another emirate. During questioning, those arrested admitted to being involved in the dispute, citing previous tensions as the cause. Authorities confirmed that the incident was a result of a personal matter and involved individuals known to each other. The case has been referred to the Public Prosecution for further legal procedures. Dubai Police reassured the public that such violent incident is rare and that the emirate remains one of the safest cities in the world.
