Dhian Singh Mand rejects Giani Gargaj as Akal Takht jathedar

Time of India30-07-2025
Amritsar: Dhian Singh Mand, the parallel officiating jathedar of the Akal Takht appointed during a Sikh gathering held under the banner of Sarbat Khalsa in 2015, has rejected the authority of Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the officiating jathedar appointed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) in March, and questioned the legitimacy of Gargaj's move to summon Sikhs to the Akal Takht, stating that any edicts or directions issued by him hold no legitimacy and are not binding on the Sikh Panth.
"We have discussed this matter and reached the conclusion that Giani Gargaj has no authority to summon any Sikh to the Akal Takht or to take decisions on Panthic matters, especially when his own appointment remains controversial," Mand said on Wednesday
According to sources, the trigger for the parallel leadership's response was the summoning of Punjab cabinet minister Harjot Singh Bains and the director of the language department, Jaswant Singh.
Jarnail Singh Sakhira, chief organiser, Sarbat Khalsa, emphasised that a major number of Sikh organisations have opposed the procedure adopted by the SGPC to appoint Giani Gargaj. "Damdami Taksal, led by Harnam Singh Dhumma, has been vocal in its rejection of Giani Gargaj's appointment. Not only the Taksal, but the Sant Samaj and various Nihang groups have also passed resolutions declaring his appointment invalid, citing violations of Sikh principles and traditions," said Sakhira.

Sources said that the controversy surrounding Giani Gargaj's appointment has exposed the deepening tensions between the SGPC and the broader Panthic bodies. Interestingly, Giani Raghbir Singh, former Akal Takht jathedar and Golden Temple head granthi, who earlier criticised the manner of Gargaj's appointment, has now hosted and honoured him at his residence.
When asked about the apparent truce, Mand dismissed it as occurring under "suspicious circumstances." "How can Giani Raghbir Singh honour someone whose appointment he himself previously condemned as a violation of maryada (Sikh religious code)?" Mand questioned.

AAP govt will transform roads leading to all religious sites: Harbhajan Singh ETO

Days after the Sikh clergy at Akal Takht directed the state government to address the condition of the roads leading to historic gurdwaras associated with Guru Teg Bahadur in view of his 350th martyrdom day, cabinet minister Harbhajan Singh ETO on Saturday announced that roads leading to all religious sites will be transformed. Cabinet minister Harbhajan Singh ETO (centre) with AAP leaders at the party's event in Baba Bakala, Amritsar. (HT) While addressing a political conference organised by the ruling AAP on the occasion of Rakhar Punya, a Sikh festival commemorating the discovery of Guru Teg Bahadur as the ninth Sikh Guru by Baba Makhan Shah Lubana, the minister said the AAP government had fulfilled almost all guarantees that were promised to the people before the elections. Except him, no big face of the ruling AAP turned up at the event, despite chief minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal being in Tarn Taran district. Referring to the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Teg Bahadur, ETO invited the 'sangat' to participate in these programmes, and announced that before September 5, the memorial of Bhai Jaita at Anandpur Sahib, built at a cost of around ₹20 crore, will be inaugurated to formally commence these events. The minister declared that the infrastructure of villages and towns blessed by Guru Teg Bahadur's presence will be transformed. He added that in just three and a half years, the Bhagwant Mann government had accomplished as much work as previous governments could not in 75 years. He highlighted the provision of 600 units of free electricity to every household, major improvements in the power sector, uninterrupted eight-hour daytime electricity supply to farmers and the purchase of a thermal plant from the private sector by the Punjab government. Referring to the 'corrupt coal purchasing practices' of previous governments for their personal gain, he said, 'We have stopped that racket and begun using our own coal mines, which has brought significant economic benefits to the power department. Today, the power department is earning profits of over ₹2,500 crore.' He further announced that soon the chief minister will provide medical insurance worth ₹10 lakh to every household, which will permanently remove the burden of medicine expenses from common people's pockets. Speaking about the war against drugs, the minister said so far, ministers, MLAs, constituency in-charges and other party leaders had visited over 7,000 villages and towns to spread the message against drugs.

‘If you ask a Pakistani ...': Army chief mocks Pak victory claim; credits ‘free hand' for Op Sindoor success

NEW DELHI: Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi on Saturday took a swipe at Pakistan over its claim of winning the May clashes with India following Operation Sindoor . While speaking at IIT Madras, Dwivedi said that narrative management plays a key role in war. "If you ask a Pakistani whether you lost or won, he'd say, 'My chief has become a field marshal. We must have won, that's why he's become a field marshal,'" he said. — ANI (@ANI) Dwivedi was referring to the Pakistan government's move to promote its Army chief, Asim Munir, to a five-star general and field marshal. He also claimed that the Centre gave a "free hand" to the armed forces to execute Operation Sindoor. "What happened on 22 April in Pahalgam shocked the nation. On the 23rd, the next day itself, we all sat down. This is the first time that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, 'Enough is enough.' All three chiefs were very clear that something had to be done. The free hand was given — 'you decide what is to be done.' That is the kind of confidence, political direction, and political clarity we saw for the first time," Dwivedi said. "That is what raises your morale. That is how it helped our army commanders-in-chief to be on the ground and act as per their wisdom," he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo Earlier, Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal AP Singh also attributed the success of Operation Sindoor to the 'political will' of the central government, asserting that the Indian Armed Forces carried out the mission without any external constraints. 'A key reason for success was the presence of political will. There was very clear political will and very clear directions given to us. No restrictions were put on us... If there were any constraints, they were self-made. The forces decided what the rules of engagement would be. We decided how we wanted to control the escalation. We had full freedom to plan and execute,' Singh said at an event at the HAL Management Academy in Bengaluru. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people. The armed forces targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, eliminating over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. Pakistan retaliated with cross-border shelling, attempted drone strikes, and air defence measures. India's counterstrikes damaged radar installations, communication hubs, and airfields across 11 Pakistani bases, including the Nur Khan air base.

Wayne Gretzky's silence on Donald Trump's anti-Canada rhetoric still sparks debate years later

Wayne Gretzky's reputation took an unexpected hit in the mid-2020s (Getty Images) Once celebrated as Canada's most beloved sports icon, Wayne Gretzky's reputation took an unexpected hit in the mid-2020s — not because of his legendary NHL career, but because of his perceived silence during a politically charged moment between Canada and the United States. From national hero to lightning rod for criticism Gretzky, known worldwide as 'The Great One,' had long been a symbol of Canadian pride, leading the Edmonton Oilers to four Stanley Cups in the 1980s and carrying the maple leaf on the international stage. His emotional departure to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988 was mourned by fans, but it never tarnished his image at home. — Hockeyhighness1 (@Hockeyhighness1) That changed when Gretzky was spotted at Donald Trump 's Mar-a-Lago election night party wearing a 'Make America Great Again' hat, and later attending Trump's inauguration. The optics were jarring for many Canadians — especially as Trump ramped up rhetoric suggesting Canada should become the '51st state' and mocking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as merely the 'governor' of Canada. Gretzky's friendship with Trump wasn't new — his son-in-law, golfer Dustin Johnson, was already close to the former U.S. president — but it was his refusal to publicly push back on Trump's remarks that lit a firestorm. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Duong Chu Van An: Unsold Furniture Liquidation 2024 (Prices May Surprise You) Unsold Furniture | Search Ads Learn More Undo As Edmonton sportswriter Terry Jones put it, 'If I'm right that [Gretzky] doesn't think Canada should become the 51st state, he should step up and say it.' Public reaction and lasting perception The fallout was swift. A statue of Gretzky outside Edmonton's Rogers Place was vandalized with excrement, an almost unthinkable act against a national treasure. Fans noticed when, during a Canada-USA hockey event, he appeared in a navy suit rather than the iconic red jersey worn by past honorary captains — a symbolic absence of visible patriotism. Other Canadian celebrities, like Mike Myers and Michael Bublé, openly defended Canada's sovereignty during this period. Gretzky, however, remained silent. Years later, the episode remains a cautionary tale about how silence from public figures during politically charged moments can speak louder than words — and how even 'The Great One' is not immune to the shifting tides of public opinion.
