Barnama5 days ago

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- Several state leaders have marked National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025 with tributes to the country's media professionals, praising their integrity and resilience in the face of growing challenges.
In Negeri Sembilan, senior state executive councillor Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias described journalists as a bulwark against misinformation, lauding their efforts to deliver accurate reporting in an era dominated by fake news.
'The role of journalists is far from easy. They face safety risks, tight deadlines and the burden of public trust. They are essential in ensuring facts prevail over falsehoods,' he said
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh thanked journalists for acting as a bridge between policymakers and the public.
'Your work reflects the aspirations of leadership. Keep writing and may those in Melaka continue to do so with integrity,' he said.
In Perak, Communications, Multimedia and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi highlighted the growing regional significance of HAWANA. This year's celebration coincides with the ASEAN Summit and includes participation from Southeast Asian media.
'These opportunities to collaborate and exchange ideas are rare. Malaysian media should seize them to expand their networks and elevate their work,' he said.
Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli posted his tribute on Facebook, commending journalists for nurturing an informed and socially aware public.
'Continue your work with ethics, professionalism and courage in pursuit of the truth,' he wrote.

New MMC developments to be announced at Hawana 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: New developments regarding the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) are expected to be announced during the summit of the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2025 on June 14, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He stated that the MMC was established with a clear mission: to defend media freedom, ensure fair and responsible reporting, and serve as a channel for the public to voice complaints against the media in a civil manner. "In building this ecosystem, another important achievement was recorded this year when the Dewan Rakyat passed the Malaysian Media Council Bill 2024 in February. "After more than 50 years of discussion, our country has finally succeeded in establishing the Malaysian Media Council, a self-regulatory body that brings together all types of media, including print, broadcast and digital media," he said. Fahmi said this when speaking at the Hawana 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of Bernama-Motorhome at Wisma Bernama here on Tuesday (June 3). Also present were Ministry of Communications secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also the Hawana 2025 Project director, as well as Bernama's top management. Fahmi expressed confidence that with the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council and other initiatives the government is laying a strong foundation for the future of the Malaysian media. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', Hawana 2025 will be held at WTC KL from June 13 to 15 with the highlight of the celebration on June 14, which will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalist associations and media representatives from Asean member countries are invited to bring together the professional media fraternity and industry experts while exchanging ideas and forging strategic relationships. Fahmi also said that on May 14, 2025, the Bernama (Amendment) Act 2024 was gazetted, covering entities that disseminate news through various platforms such as newspapers, publications, radio, television, as well as other mass communication platforms, including electronic and digital media. "This amendment also aims to ensure that Bernama's structure and functions are in line with developments in information and communication technology, as well as meeting the needs of the increasingly complex media industry," he said. Meanwhile, May 29 was gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of Utusan Melayu newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions of industry players who have become a medium to shape the minds of an informed society in fostering cooperation and driving positive change in the industry. At today's event, Fahmi also officiated the Bernama Motorhome-Mobile Studio, making Bernama the first media agency in Malaysia to utilise a recreational vehicle, or motorhome, equipped with mobile broadcast studio facilities that can be dynamically deployed to disseminate news quickly. "Congratulations and well done to Bernama for always striving to improve the quality of its services and excel as a trusted source of news. "I believe that the Bernama Mobile Studio facility can strengthen external coverage operations and news production with greater flexibility," said Fahmi. - Bernama

Cambodia to file complaint with ICJ over Thai border disputea

Published on: Tuesday, June 03, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 03, 2025 By: AFP Text Size: Cambodia and Thailand have long been at odds over their more than 800km-long border. (EPA Images pic) PHNOM PENH: Cambodia will file a complaint with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over border disputes with Thailand, prime minister Hun Manet said today, after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a recent frontier clash. 'Cambodia hopes that the Thai side will agree with Cambodia to jointly bring these issues to the International Court of Justice… to prevent armed confrontation again over border uncertainty,' Hun Manet said during a meeting between MPs and senators. Military clashes between the Southeast Asian neighbours erupted in 2008 and have led to several years of sporadic violence, resulting in at least 28 deaths. The most recent occurred Wednesday, when a Cambodian soldier was killed in a location known as the Emerald Triangle – a joint border area between Cambodia, Thailand and Laos. The day after, Cambodia's foreign ministry sent a letter to the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh demanding 'an immediate and thorough investigation' into the 'unprovoked attack'. Describing the incident as 'a violation of Cambodian sovereignty', Phnom Penh said it remained committed to resolving the issue through 'peaceful and diplomatic avenues'. Prime minister Hun Manet said that even if the Thai side did not agree on bringing the issue to the ICJ, Cambodia would still file the complaint. He added that the border dispute was being 'incited by small extremist groups in both countries', which could lead to further clashes. Thailand's ministry of foreign affairs did not immediately respond to a request for comment from AFP. Cambodia's military had said they were attacked first in Wednesday's incident, while the Thai side said their soldiers were responding to gunshots. The Thai and Cambodian militaries met the following day, agreeing to ease tensions. Thailand says a joint boundary committee will meet in the next two weeks to resolve the issue. The Emerald Triangle is among the areas that will be named in the ICJ complaint, Hun Manet said. Another is Ta Moan Thom Temple, the backdrop for a video posted on social media earlier this year showing a woman singing a patriotic Khmer song which led to Bangkok lodging a formal protest to Phnom Penh. Cambodia and Thailand have long been at odds over their more than 800km-long border, which was largely drawn during the French occupation of Indochina. The 2008 military clashes erupted over a patch of land next to Preah Vihear Temple, a 900-year-old structure near their shared border. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
