Smith and Taylor help the White Sox cool off the Tigers with an 8-1 victory
CHICAGO (AP) — Shane Smith pitched three-hit ball into the sixth inning, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 8-1 on Tuesday night to stop a four-game slide.
Michael A. Taylor homered and drove in four runs for Chicago, which had dropped seven of eight overall. Smith (2-3) struck out six in 5 1/3 scoreless innings for his first win since April 24.
It was the first home win for the White Sox against the Tigers since June 4, 2023. They had lost a franchise-record 11 straight home games versus Detroit.
Dillon Dingler hit an RBI double in the seventh to account for the Tigers' only run. The AL Central leaders had won seven of eight, including a 13-1 victory in the series opener.
Taylor started in center field in place of Luis Robert Jr., who is making some adjustments at the plate and got the day off.
Chicago opened a 4-0 lead when Taylor hit a three-run drive off Tyler Holton with two out in the sixth. It was his third homer of the season.
Austin Slater tacked on a two-run double in the seventh against Dylan Smith on a bullpen day for Detroit.
The Tigers went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine overall.
Chicago jumped in front in the fourth. Brenan Hanifee replaced Brant Hurter (2-1) and committed a throwing error to help set up Taylor's bases-loaded walk.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but Wenceel Pérez struck out swinging against Brandon Eisert before Dingler lined out to right.

The Red Sox need to make some noise against the Yankees
While barely avoiding a sweep at the hands of the Angels isn't something to celebrate, the Boston Red Sox have to be feeling pretty good about themselves after Wednesday's walk-off win. They need to channel all that good mojo this weekend against the first-place Yankees in New York. The AL East rivals will square off for the first time this season with a three-game set in the Bronx. The 38-23 Yankees have the third-best record in baseball and look determined to win it all after coming up short last October. It's the exact opposite of what the Red Sox have looked like this season. Boston is still licking its wounds after going just 11-17 in May and a 2-2 start to June, despite facing some lackluster opposition. Alex Cora's club did not take advantage of an easy part of the schedule and sits at just 30-34 on the year -- 9.5 games back of New York. If this isn't a make-or-break series for the Red Sox, it's pretty darn close. They're reaching a desperation point, winning just three times in their last 10 games. Over the last 11 games, Boston has by one run five times thanks in large part to the team's lack of fundamentals all over the diamond. The Yankees, meanwhile, have won three of four, eight of their last 11, and 12 of their last 16 games. They're in the top three in most offensive categories, thanks to an absolute monster season from Aaron Judge so far. The MVP favorite is hitting a ridiculous .392 (the best in MLB) with a 1.250 OPS (also first) with 21 homers (third) and 50 RBI (fifth). The New York offense isn't just a one-hit wonder though, with solid hitters up and down the lineup. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt is slashing .323/.380/.471 for the season. Centerfielder Trent Grisham is second on the team with 13 homers, while DH Ben Rice has left the yard a dozen times. Cody Bellinger has been solid with nine homers and 10 doubles. Jazz Chisholm returned last series and went 5-for-11 with a homer and two runs scored as the Yankees took two of three from the Guardians. The Red Sox will send Garrett Crochet to the bump Saturday night, so the team should be competitive for at least one game this series. But Boston really needs a series win, which they've done just twice in their last seven series. A good series win against the Yankees could push the Red Sox in the right direction at a difficult part of the schedule. After a visit from the Rays next week, the Yankees will be at Fenway Park next weekend. Boston then heads out West for series against the first-place Mariners, first-place Giants, and the Angels team that just took two of three at Fenway Park. Red Sox-Yankees Pitching Matchups The Red Sox luck out a bit this weekend, as they'll avoid New York ace Max Fried. The lefty tossed six shutout innings of one-run ball against Cleveland on Thursday, so the Red Sox won't see Fried and his 1.78 ERA. Here's who will toe the rubber for the two teams over the next three days: Friday: Walker Buehler (4-3. 4.44 ERA) vs. Will Warren (3-3, 5.19 ERA) Grisham is batting just .211 in 19 career at-bats against Buehler, but two of his four hits were homers. Chisholm is 3-for-7 in his career against the righty. Judge is 0-for-2 against Buehler with a strikeout. Saturday: Garrett Crochet (5-4, 1.98 ERA) vs. Ryan Yarbrough (3-0, 2.83 ERA) No one on the Yankees has more than three career at-bats against Crochet. Bellinger is 2-for-2 against the Boston ace with a homer. Judge is 1-for-2 with a single and a strikeout, while Goldschmidt is 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. Rafael Devers has the most at-bats of all Red Sox hitters against Yarbrough, going 6-for-27 (.222) with a double, a homer, and six RBI. Sunday: Hunter Dobbins (2-1, 4.06 ERA) vs. Carlos Rodon (8-3, 2.49 ERA) This will be the first time the Yankees see Dobbins, who is coming off five innings of one-run ball against the Angels on Monday night. Dobbins came out of the bullpen that evening after former New York prospect Richard Fitts was roughed up for six runs (five earned) in the first inning. While Boston avoids Fried this series, they do not avoid Rodon, who has been spectacular for New York. We'll definitely be seeing Rob Refsnyder in the Boston lineup Sunday night, as he's 4-for-12 with two doubles, a homer, and three walks in his career against Rodon.

Detroit Tigers infield prospect Hao-Yu Lee takes a pitch to the face, exits game
A Detroit Tigers prospect recently suffered a pretty gruesome injury. Hao-Yu Lee, ranked as the team's No. 6 prospect according to MLB Pipeline and playing for Triple-A Toledo, took an 89 mph sinker to the face during Toledo's 5-2 loss to the Columbus Clippers on Wednesday, June 4. Advertisement Lee left the game with the help of a trainer. The extent of his injury is not yet known. The Tigers acquired Lee in a trade for pitcher Michael Lorenzen on Aug. 1, 2023, and the infielder has hit well in the Tigers organization since then. He had an .851 OPS in 386 plate appearances for Double-A Erie in 2024 and is slashing .262/.356/.400 in 225 plate appearances for Toledo in 2025. Lee is currently the top-rated third base prospect in the Tigers organization according to MLB Pipeline, having split his time this season between second base (24 games), third base (24 games) and designated hitter (three games). College baseball doesn't garner the same attention as college football and college basketball, but Baton Rouge is different. It has no equal. Alex Box Stadium holds 10,326, but you would think it's a lot more if you've ever watched a super regional in Baton Rouge. The place comes alive, and it's not all that different from Tiger Stadium across the street, despite a capacity that's just 10% of what the football stands hold. LSU has hosted 12 Super Regionals at The Box. The Tigers are 9-3 in those series and 19-9 in super regional games at home. Now, it's West Virginia's turn to witness the power of the postseason at The Box. The Mountaineers roll in for the Baton Rouge Regional set to begin on Saturday. LSU didn't make a super regional in 2024 after falling in the Chapel Hill Regional. The last time LSU was in this spot was 2023, when the eventual national champs swept Kentucky in two games. Super regional baseball at Alex Box will be a welcome site for LSU fans. Here are the top five super regional moments in Alex Box history. June 6, 2003: Back-to-back homers vs. Baylor force Game 3 On the brink of elimination, LSU used back-to-back home runs to lead off the eighth inning and force a game three. Clay Harris hit the first homer against pitcher Abe Woody to right-center. After the Bears made a change on the mound, Ivan Naccarata hit a solo blast to put the Tigers up 6-5. that score set up a rubber match. LSU took the series with a 20-run showing the next day. June 6, 2015: Walk-off homer vs UL-Lafayette In the latest installment of an in-state rivalry, LSU and UL-Lafayette met in Baton Rouge for a super regional match. The two sides came down to the wire in the series opener, winning 4-3 on a walk-off home run from designated hitter Chris Sciambra. The Tigers advanced to Omaha with a win the following day. The rare matchup of in-state teams well into the postseason provided an extra sense of excitement inside Alex Box Stadium. June 8, 2008: Ninth inning rally keeps LSU alive vs. UC Irvine After dropping Game 1, LSU was facing elimination in Game 2 of the super regional vs. UC Irvine. LSU trailed 7-4 entering the top of the ninth. The Tigers' season was on the brink. With the bases loaded, Jared Mitchell drew a walk to make it 7-5. Then Nicholas Pontiff drove in another run on a fielder's choice. Blake Dean singled to right field to score Mitchell, and suddenly it was tied. Catcher Sean Ochinko kept the rally going with a single to left, driving in the go-ahead run. The next day, LSU punched its ticket to Omaha. June 10, 2017: Big inning late leads LSU past Mississippi State In the opening game of the super regional against Mississippi State, LSU found itself in a hole. Trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Tigers scored four unanswered runs in their half of the frame to cement a 4-3 win. Greg Deichmann, Zach Watson and Michael Papierski recorded the RBIs. LSU pitcher Alex Lange put together a standout game, finishing with 10 strikeouts through 7.2 innings. The contest was one for the ages in eyes of then-LSU head coach Paul Mainieri. "Well, that's a game that we'll never forget in these parts," Mainieri said. "I'll be talking about this game 10 years from now." June 7, 2013: Aaron Nola dominates In what would be a two-game series win against Oklahoma, starting pitcher Aaron Nola hurled a gem. The right-handed pitcher threw a complete game shutout at home in game one, his fifth of the season. Nola allowed just two hits and didn't surrender a walk while adding six strikeouts. LSU needed the effort in its quest for a College World Series berth as it won 2-0 over the Sooners.
