Snap records slowest revenue growth in over a year amid tough competition for ads

CNA8 hours ago
Snap on Tuesday reported second-quarter revenue growth that was the slowest in more than a year, a sign of growing competition from bigger social media rivals including Meta.
Shares of the Snapchat parent slumped 15 per cent after the bell following the results.
The company's results came after stellar performances by rivals, including Instagram and Facebook parent Meta Platforms and Reddit.
The Snapchat-parent's second-quarter revenue rose 8.1 per cent to $1.34 billion, largely inline with estimates.
The quarterly revenue was hit by changes to its ad platform, the timing of Ramadan and the termination of de minimis exemption or a duty-free import loophole in the U.S.
The company said it had reverted the ad platform change that unintentionally allowed some ads run at much lower prices, hurting revenue growth in the reported quarter.
Snap said its expanded roll-out of the new ad format — Sponsored Snaps, video ads that appear in user inboxes — across the U.S. and several other global regions is helping by driving more user actions and deeper engagement with ad content.
Small and medium-sized businesses were the largest contributors to ad revenue growth and its subscription service Snapchat+ remained a key driver for diversifying revenue beyond advertising.
Snapchat+ subscribers rose 42 per cent to nearly 16 million for the quarter ended June 30. Daily active users rose 9 per cent to 469 million, compared with estimates of 467.9 million.
The company forecast third-quarter revenue between $1.48 billion and $1.51 billion, compared with analysts' average estimate of $1.48 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG.
It expects quarterly adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization to be between $110 million and $135 million, above estimates of $111.9 million.

Meta says working to thwart WhatsApp scammers

SAN FRANCISCO, United States - Meta on Aug 5 said it shut nearly seven million WhatsApp accounts linked to scammers in the first half of this year and is ramping up safeguards against such schemes. 'Our team identified the accounts and disabled them before the criminal organisations that created them could use them,' WhatsApp external affairs director Clair Deevy said. Often run by organised gangs, the scams range from bogus cryptocurrency investments to get-rich-quick pyramid schemes, WhatsApp executives said in a briefing. 'There is always a catch and it should be a red flag for everyone: you have to pay upfront to get promised returns or earnings,' Meta-owned WhatsApp said in a blog post. WhatsApp detected and banned more than 6.8 million accounts linked to scam centers, most of them in South-east Asia , according to Meta. WhatsApp and Meta worked with OpenAI to disrupt a scam traced to Cambodia that used ChatGPT to generate text messages containing a link to a WhatsApp chat to hook victims, according to the tech firms. Meta on Aug 5 began prompting WhatsApp users to be wary when added to unfamiliar chat groups by people they do not know. New 'safety overviews' provide information about the group and tips on spotting scams, along with the option of making a quick exit. 'We've all been there: someone you don't know attempting to message you, or add you to a group chat, promising low-risk investment opportunities or easy money, or saying you have an unpaid bill that's overdue,' Meta said in a blog post. 'The reality is, these are often scammers trying to prey on people's kindness, trust and willingness to help – or, their fears that they could be in trouble if they don't send money fast.' AFP

Seven & i's North American business IPO to fund quicker growth, says CEO

TOKYO :Seven & i Holdings' planned listing of its North American operations would enable the Japanese convenience store operator to take on additional debt for more aggressive growth than currently planned, its chief executive said on Wednesday. The listing, billed for the second half of 2026, would allow for faster store rollouts in the U.S. and additional bolt-on M&As, CEO Stephen Dacus said at a strategy briefing for analysts and media in Tokyo. The fate of the beleaguered operator of the 7-Eleven chain rests on its ability to demonstrate it can grow independently, having successfully fended off a takeover bid from Canadian rival Alimentation Couche-Tard. Couche-Tard withdrew its $46 billion offer last month citing a lack of engagement from Seven & i, which precipitated a 9 per cent fall in the latter's share price that reflected investor scepticism about Seven & i's standalone growth plans. In Japan, Seven & i faces stiff competition from faster-growing rivals Family Mart and Lawson, while in the U.S., analysts and investors say lacklustre profit margins belie its potential as the largest convenience store chain in the country. For years Seven & i has been under pressure from shareholders, including a series of activist investors, to boost returns by selling off assets and focusing on its core convenience store business. In March, Seven unveiled a major restructuring in which it sold off its superstore unit, announced a 2 trillion yen ($13.55 billion) share buyback through 2030 and committed to a public listing of its North American arm in the second half of 2026. ($1 = 147.5600 yen)
