Can a fresh spin on its heritage put Burberry back in fashion's front row?

The Star18-07-2025
A year after Josh Schulman became Burberry's CEO with a mandate to turn the British luxury brand around, investors say they're pleased with early signs of recovery even though sales are still falling.
Burberry, known for its trademark trench coats and check pattern scarves, is in the early stages of a reboot as Schulman tries to reverse the group's years of underperformance and return sales and profit to growth.
Analysts expect the group to report on Friday (July 18) that comparable retail sales fell 3% in the April-June quarter from a year earlier, according to a consensus provided by Burberry.
That would mark an improvement from a 6% fall in the January-March period.
Burberry issued a string of profit warnings under previous CEO Jonathan Akeroyd, and Schulman after taking over said the brand had lost its focus on outerwear and recognisable British references, and had strayed too far into a "niche aesthetic".
Its shares are up around 63% since Schulman took the helm, outperforming luxury peers, and analysts have grown more upbeat in recent weeks, with HSBC saying Burberry has the opportunity to gain market share from rivals.
"We are seeing the improvement in terms of the product range, pricing, marketing, and there are early signs that is leading to a pickup in sales – but it's early days still," said Dan Carter, a member of the investment team at Phoenix Asset Management Partners in London.
Burberry's marketing under Schulman has drawn on its association with British heritage, but in a way that is also contemporary, Carter added.
Burberry typically makes more of its revenue in the Autumn/Winter season.
However, it has been trying to tap into key events of the British summertime, with its most recent "Burberry Festival" campaign timed to coincide with Glastonbury music festival.

The campaign featured hip-hop artiste Loyle Carner and music producer Goldie, as well as model Cara Delevingne sitting in a pit of mud in Burberry rain boots, in a nod to Glastonbury's unpredictable weather.
"They're a brand that is focusing on outerwear and protection against the weather... so to try and stretch that through the year makes sense," said Carter.
As part of its turnaround, Burberry announced in May it would cut a fifth of its global workforce, a radical cost-cutting move that investors have welcomed.
Less expensive bags, more high-end trenches
The brand has moved away from high-priced bags and brought in more affordable models like its recently launched Cotswold range, priced at £1,490 to £1,890 (approximately RM8,549 to RM10,844), and the £850 (RM4,877) Horseshoe crossbody bag – driving its average bag price down by 9% since the start of October last year, according to pricing analysis by Luxurynsight.
"They're kind of trying to thread the needle of being luxury while shifting the assortment down a little bit," said Brett Sharoni, senior analyst at Pzena Investment Management in New York, which owns shares in Burberry.
"We had been engaging with Burberry for over a year before we ended up buying – and one of our big pieces of feedback to them was, you know, you don't really have a right to sell handbags for US$3,000 (RM12,764)," he said.

Burberry has, though, brought in some higher-priced outerwear products such as a ¥115,000 (RM68,268) corduroy trench coat in China, Luxurynsight found, and has broadened its range of outerwear products by 22% since the start of October last year.
Yumi Shin, chief merchandising officer at New York department store Bergdorf Goodman, said she supports the emphasis on the brand's trademark products, like the classic trench coat and winter accessories.
"We're continuing to feel optimistic about Burberry's transformation under Josh's leadership," said Shin. "Josh has a merchant's mindset and understands the necessity to balance fashion and function on the shop floor." – Reuters

Special Needs Education A Priority Under Budget 2026

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- Empowering educational institutions for students with special needs is among the key focus areas of the Ministry of Education (MoE) under Budget 2026, which is scheduled to be tabled on Oct 10. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the government, through Budget 2025, had allocated RM10 million to support private autism schools, a move that continued its commitment to ensuring that the group was not sidelined from receiving equal access to education. 'For the first time, a special allocation of RM10 million was made under Budget 2025 to support private educational institutions that cater to children with autism and special needs. 'This reflects the MADANI Government's commitment to equitable access to education, not just in terms of financial assistance but also in recognising the efforts of all stakeholders involved in driving inclusive education in the country,' she told reporters after attending a mock cheque presentation ceremony for autism schools at Sekolah Sinar Harapan here today. Fadhlina said during the event, 12 autism education institutions from Penang, Selangor, Perak, Kelantan and Johor received allocations and other forms of assistance, adding that such initiatives would continue from time to time to support the education system for special needs children. Fadhlina said the MoE was currently conducting engagement sessions on Budget 2026, with special education allocation being among the top priorities. 'Therefore, I call on all parties to offer suggestions, proposals and ideas so that we can strengthen efforts to ensure these children are given their rightful place in the education system, particularly in terms of high-level skills suited to their current needs,' she said. On a separate matter, Fadhlina said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's call for all large-scale housing projects to be equipped with schools and health centres was in line with the ministry's efforts to address overcrowding in classrooms and traffic congestion, especially in newly developed areas. 'We fully support the directive as it aligns with our existing needs, which have often been raised by the ministry.

Ringgit ends lower vs US$ and major currencies on weak demand

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit has retreated to close lower against the US dollar as well as major currencies on Thursday on lack of buying interest, said an analyst. At 6 pm, the local note eased to 4.2340/2385 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2235/2305. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the market is of the view that the US tariff is likely to take a toll on the US economy that would necessitate the Federal Reserve (Fed) to reduce the Fed Fund Rate to provide support to the economy. However, Mohd Afzanizam said the US Dollar Index (DXY) is having difficulties to gain strength as the possibilities for an interest rate cut by the Fed is gaining further traction. "The US DXY was down 0.1 per cent to 98.074 as the US tariffs continue to grab the news headline," he told Bernama. Mohd Afzanizam said the ringgit versus the US dollar was generally in a tight range of between RM4.22 and RM4.23 during the day. At the close, the ringgit ended lower against major currencies. It fell against the yen to 2.8732/8765 from 2.8570/8619 at the close on Wednesday, dropped versus the British pound to 5.6596/6656 from 5.6160/6253, and the euro to 4.9411/9463 from 4.8929/9010 previously. The ringgit also trended lower against regional peers. It dropped against the Singapore dollar to 3.2973/3013 from 3.2806/2863, declined against the Thai baht to 13.0954/1146 from 13.0291/0567, was lower against the Indonesian rupiah to 259.9/260.3 from 258.1/258.6 and slipped against the Philippine peso to 7.42/7.44 from 7.34/7.36 previously. - Bernama

How Malaysians are growing old and going broke

With a population rapidly ageing, and a fall in birth rates leading to a contracting tax base, the fear that future retirees may not have enough to get by is rising. – AI IMAGE PETALING JAYA (Aug 7): Concerns with readiness for retirement are intensifying, just three years after the government first allowed people to dip into their nest egg to get through job losses during the Covid-19 pandemic. Employees Provident Fund (EPF) CEO Ahmad Zulqarnain Onn couldn't have stressed the point more succinctly in his call for prompt measures to be taken to ensure Malaysians are both financially and socially prepared for longer lifespans. Every projection now indicates that life expectancy could reach 81 years by 2050, just a quarter of a century away. With a population rapidly ageing, and a fall in birth rates leading to a contracting tax base, the fear that future retirees may not have enough to get by is rising. FMT takes a look at the escalating challenges of retirement affordability in Malaysia and how potential reforms today can secure workers' financial future tomorrow. Overview of Malaysia's retirement savings system Malaysia's primary retirement mechanism is EPF, a defined contribution (DC) scheme where individual and employer contributions, alongside investment returns, constitute an employee's retirement savings. A legacy defined benefit (DB) pension that ensures monthly payments based on final salary and tenure remains in effect for civil servants. The DB model, though secure for beneficiaries, imposes substantial long-term costs on public finances. Conversely, the DC approach is increasingly regarded as more sustainable globally, as it transfers investment and longevity risk away from the government, offers individuals enhanced control and portability, and presents fewer fiscal management challenges. Impact of Covid‑19 withdrawals Economic volatility of recent years has put the predictability of the DC model to the test. More than 8.1 million EPF contributors withdrew over RM145 billion from their savings during the pandemic, often to offset job losses or settle debts. Many have almost or entirely emptied out their reserves, with half of those aged 55 and below having been left with less than RM10,000 each. The median balance now stands at only RM10,898. Rising life expectancy The concerns are compounded by the fact that Malaysians now live longer. Men now average 74.8 years and women 78.9 years, up from 68.7 years for men and 73.4 years for women in 1990. If one retires at 60, and assuming he or she needs RM1,500 a month to sustain a decent life, he will need at least RM360,000 in the bank to last him up to two decades. However, as of 2023, nearly 74 per cent of active EPF members had accumulated less than RM100,000 each, which is insufficient for even five to six years – without considering escalating healthcare and elderly care costs. Demographic and fiscal challenges As birth rates fall, the tax base is shrinking, making it unsustainable to continue with a DB pension system. Malaysia's tax-to-GDP ratio was just 12.6% in 2023, far below the Asia-Pacific average of 19.3 per cent and the OECD average of 34 per cent. At the same time, the country's life birth rate fell by 10.2 per cent to 100,732 in Q2 2024 compared with the previous corresponding period, according to data from the department of statistics. If this trend continues, there will be fewer taxpayers and EPF contributors going forward, slowing fund growth just as more people join the ranks of retirees. In contrast, countries with generous DB pensions can sustain their retirees because they collect higher taxes and have built a large reserve. On the other hand, Malaysia has limited tax revenue and a smaller reserve, making it impossible to sustain a fully tax-funded pay-as-you-go pension scheme without major reform. Potential solutions To safeguard against the risk of exhausting retirement reserves, Malaysia must promote greater financial literacy, enhance saving incentives, develop a modest social safety net, and establish integrated aged-care facilities to support its ageing population. Introducing a hybrid pension scheme could restore some benefits of the former DB system while retaining sustainability. Within this framework, employees would continue contributing to their EPF accounts. However, upon retirement, only a portion could be withdrawn as a lump sum, with the remainder distributed as monthly payments throughout their lifetime. Such an arrangement partially reinstates the protective features of the legacy civil-service pension – a guaranteed lifelong minimum income – while avoiding the fiscal strain of a fully tax-funded model. Singapore's CPF Life serves as a relevant example, blending personal savings with lifelong payouts to prevent retirees from outliving their resources. This proposed hybrid reform holds promise for ensuring retirees maintain a basic standard of living, even if individual savings are depleted. Moreover, initiatives aimed at bolstering financial education and facilitating easier EPF top-ups – whether through matching contributions, tax incentives, or voluntary programmes – could meaningfully replenish and grow retirement savings. Urgency is mounting for comprehensive reform. By integrating individual responsibility with inter-generational support, Malaysia can help ensure that today's workers do not become tomorrow's financially vulnerable retirees. *This article was first published by epf reform retirees savings social protection
