Which country is hosting World Environment Day 2025?
World Environment Day 2025 will be officially hosted this year by the Republic of Korea, also known as South Korea. Jeju Province, a scenic island renowned for its environmental initiatives and sustainable living patterns, will be the centre of the celebrations. Jeju has taken decisive action to eliminate plastic by 2040. Local governments have boosted recycling, encouraged eco-tourism, and mandated garbage separation at the source.
As the host nation, Korea will lead international discussions, policy decisions, and activities aimed at reducing plastic pollution. Panel discussions, cleanup campaigns, public pledges, and innovative displays of plastic alternatives will all be part of the events. A nation will inspire other countries and will share best practices by hosting Environment Day this year.

Protecting nature is responsibility of every citizen, says Haryana CM
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said on Sunday that protecting nature and environment is not merely a government initiative but the responsibility of every citizen. "Amid continuous development, we must not forget that the basis of life lies in nature and trees. Issues like climate change, irregular rainfall and rising temperatures can only be addressed through large-scale tree plantation and their protection, which is essential for securing our future," he added. The Chief Minister said that the state government has set a target of planting 2.1 crore saplings under several campaigns, to be achieved with collective efforts. He was addressing the 76th state-level Van Mahotsav organised at Seonsar in Kurukshetra district. Earlier, he laid the foundation stone of the Saraswati Wetland Reservoir, Saraswati Flora and Biodiversity Conservation Park and Saraswati Jungle Safari. He also released the 'Triphala' booklet. On this occasion, the Chief Minister planted saplings to give a message of environmental protection. He also unveiled the Haryana wildlife map, Kurukshetra wildlife map, and five books prepared by the Forest Department. Chief Minister Saini said that the 76th Van Mahotsav is not just an event, but a symbol of gratitude towards nature, responsibility and a resolve to ensure a happy future for generations to come. "This is the third event in the series of this year's state-level Van Mahotsav celebrations. Various programmes are also being held at the district level across the state, with active participation from local people and students." He added that Van Mahotsav means a festival of forests, a tribute to nature, and an expansion of greenery. "It reminds us that trees are not just a source of wood but the foundation of life." He said that "while we are moving ahead rapidly in the race for modernity, Van Mahotsav reminds us not to exploit nature but to learn to coexist with it". Recognising the importance of trees, the state government has launched several plantation drives, which have yielded positive results, the Chief Minister added. Many plans have been formulated to increase forest cover, CM Saini said. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also launched a unique campaign, "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam", on June 5, 2024, on World Environment Day at the Buddha Jayanti Park in Delhi. In the first phase of this campaign, a target of planting 1.6 crore saplings in Haryana was set, but the state exceeded the target by planting 1.87 crore saplings. This year, on June 5, the second phase of "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" began, with a target of 2.1 crore saplings. "Since October 2014, about 18 crore saplings have been planted in the state." The state government has also started special schemes to promote urban forestry so that greenery can be increased in cities. In addition, strict measures have been taken to prevent illegal felling of trees and to protect wildlife. The Forest Department has been instructed to be more proactive in this direction. To make society more sensitive towards forests and wildlife, facilities such as jeep safaris and children's study tours have been arranged at Kalesar. The 'Green Aravalli Action Plan' has also been launched in southern Haryana. Minister inaugurates ₹26-crore bridge at Navalpur in Ranipet
A ₹26.65 crore Road Over Bridge (ROB), which was built across the rail line at Navalpur in Ranipet town, was opened on Saturday, bringing relief to hundreds of motorists. Officials of National Highways wing of State Highways, who carried out the work along with Southern Railway, said that the entire work was completed in June this year. However, the new bridge was kept closed for official inauguration by the Centre as the project was entirely funded by the Union Ministry of Road Transport & Highways. To end the ordeal of motorists of taking a detour to reach the town, the residents demanded its opening as early as possible for public use. 'The new bridge will end a detour of at least 5-6 kms to reach Ranipet town from surrounding villages to reach hospitals and government offices. Ambulances can reach the needy on time, using the new facility,' said R. Parvathi, a resident. Minister for Textiles and Handlooms, R. Gandhi, who is also Ranipet MLA, inaugurated the bridge by taking a stroll on the new facility along with residents, social activists, elected representatives and officials of State Highways. Originally given its nod in 2019, the bridge is jointly done by the Southern Railway and State Highways. The two-lane bridge is 921 metres long and 12 metres wide with at least 50 LED street lights on the bridge and its service lanes. Tiled footpaths with steel hand railings also provided. Staircases from the bridge to reach the railway station at Navalpur are available. Highways officials said that the railway track portion of the work including concrete decks and pillars were done by the railways to ensure train services on the route are not affected. Ramp of the bridge and approach roads were built by State Highways. Adequate land to lay service lanes have also been acquired. Restrictions during the pandemic (COVID-19) was a major reason for delay in completion of the bridge work. Residents said that most schools, colleges, bus stands, government offices and banks are located on one side of the rail line whereas residential colonies were located on opposite sides of the track. Prior to the opening of the new bridge, motorists travel to Chennai - Bengaluru Highway (NH 48) to reach Ranipet town due to bridge work. With the opening of the bridge, residents seek resumption of all buses including long distance ones to use the new bridge to reach Ranipet town.

BMC to install high mast & LED lights for better illumination in Salt Lake
1 2 Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to install high mast lights in 12 prominent places across Salt Lake for better illumination. The authorities will also install new LED light fittings in Sukantanagar, situated off EM Bypass. The 12 places selected by the civic authorities for installing high mast lights are near Lalkuthi at CGO Complex More, beside Bidhannagar North Police Station, CE Block Market, CAP Camp Intersection, Swimming Pool Intersection, Tank No. 4 Intersection, Mishra Island, SA Park, AJ Block Football Playground, AL Block Park, in front of CK Block Market, and at CL Block. Civic officials said that the spots were chosen for better illumination with high mast lights for the convenience of residents. The authorities estimated around Rs 41 lakh for installing the high mast lights. Each high mast light pole will have a height of 12.5 metres. The agency that the civic authorities engage for the job will need to complete the work in less than two months from the date of starting the installation work.
