"Amid continuous development, we must not forget that the basis of life lies in nature and trees. Issues like climate change, irregular rainfall and rising temperatures can only be addressed through large-scale tree plantation and their protection, which is essential for securing our future," he added.
The Chief Minister said that the state government has set a target of planting 2.1 crore saplings under several campaigns, to be achieved with collective efforts.
He was addressing the 76th state-level Van Mahotsav organised at Seonsar in Kurukshetra district.
Earlier, he laid the foundation stone of the Saraswati Wetland Reservoir, Saraswati Flora and Biodiversity Conservation Park and Saraswati Jungle Safari.
He also released the 'Triphala' booklet.
On this occasion, the Chief Minister planted saplings to give a message of environmental protection.
He also unveiled the Haryana wildlife map, Kurukshetra wildlife map, and five books prepared by the Forest Department.
Chief Minister Saini said that the 76th Van Mahotsav is not just an event, but a symbol of gratitude towards nature, responsibility and a resolve to ensure a happy future for generations to come.
"This is the third event in the series of this year's state-level Van Mahotsav celebrations. Various programmes are also being held at the district level across the state, with active participation from local people and students."
He added that Van Mahotsav means a festival of forests, a tribute to nature, and an expansion of greenery.
"It reminds us that trees are not just a source of wood but the foundation of life."
He said that "while we are moving ahead rapidly in the race for modernity, Van Mahotsav reminds us not to exploit nature but to learn to coexist with it".
Recognising the importance of trees, the state government has launched several plantation drives, which have yielded positive results, the Chief Minister added.
Many plans have been formulated to increase forest cover, CM Saini said.
He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also launched a unique campaign, "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam", on June 5, 2024, on World Environment Day at the Buddha Jayanti Park in Delhi.
In the first phase of this campaign, a target of planting 1.6 crore saplings in Haryana was set, but the state exceeded the target by planting 1.87 crore saplings.
This year, on June 5, the second phase of "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" began, with a target of 2.1 crore saplings.
"Since October 2014, about 18 crore saplings have been planted in the state."
The state government has also started special schemes to promote urban forestry so that greenery can be increased in cities.
In addition, strict measures have been taken to prevent illegal felling of trees and to protect wildlife.
The Forest Department has been instructed to be more proactive in this direction.
To make society more sensitive towards forests and wildlife, facilities such as jeep safaris and children's study tours have been arranged at Kalesar.
The 'Green Aravalli Action Plan' has also been launched in southern Haryana.
This joint project of the Central and state governments will be implemented in the Aravalli hills of four states, including Haryana, covering 29 districts, five of which are in Haryana.

Activists allege Aravalli forest destruction under ‘Matri Van' project
Environmental activists and local residents have alleged large-scale destruction of a thriving Aravalli forest patch behind Koliwale Baba Mandir and Sun City, Sector 54, under the Haryana government's 'Matri Van' reforestation initiative. The project, inaugurated by the chief minister on August 2, is being executed by a private developer authorised by the Forest Department, they said. The group has flagged potential violations of the Indian Forest Act, 1927; the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980; and the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, alleging ecological damage, misuse of heavy machinery in fragile terrain. While the patch is dominated by Vilayati Kikar, they claim it sustains diverse flora and fauna, including ground-nesting birds and reptiles, and that the use of heavy machinery is causing irreversible habitat destruction. 'This is not reforestation — this is habitat destruction,' said Vaishali Rana, trustee of the movement. 'Introducing cycling tracks, yoga centres and recreational structures here is not conservation but an urban park plan to benefit nearby luxury apartments.' The group has flagged potential violations of the Indian Forest Act, 1927; the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980; and the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, alleging ecological damage, misuse of heavy machinery in fragile terrain, and a conflict of interest in awarding the project to developers with a past record of environmental violations. Col S.S. Oberoi, another trustee, said the choice of site was flawed. 'If the aim is truly rewilding, why target a patch that already has a thick canopy? Restoration should focus on degraded and barren Aravalli stretches, not thriving forest land. Kusum Sharma, chairperson of the Suncity RWA, alleged irregularities in the project's execution. 'I saw a developer's horticulture team removing large logs and clearing trees. They could not show any paperwork or tender documents. If this is part of the Matri Van project, why use JCBs instead of manual labour? The same Forest Department that prohibits cutting even small stems during monsoon is now allowing large-scale clearing.' In response, Forest officials denied the allegations. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Gurugram, Ramkumar Jangra, said, 'As per the plan and directions of the forest minister, we are removing Kikar and planting native species such as pipal, jamun, and banyan to benefit wildlife. The work is being done by forest teams, not private contractors clearing for construction.' Neelam Ahluwalia, a founding member of People for Aravallis, warned of long-term consequences. 'In water-stressed, polluted Gurgaon, the Aravallis are our only water recharge zones and green lungs. Removing mature trees in such critical areas is beyond logic and threatens both residents and wildlife. We need a Green Charter and Liveability Index for the city.' Activists have demanded an immediate halt to earthmoving operations, an independent ecological assessment, and an investigation into the project's awarding process. 'Destroying a forest to 'create' a forest is greenwashing and a betrayal of public trust,' said Rana.

11k saplings planted in green drive
Indore:The Union minister of state for Defence Sanjay Seth participated in a large-scale tree plantation drive in Indore on Sunday under the Ek Bagiya Maa ke Naam campaign. During the event, 11,000 saplings were planted each at the BSF campus and near Gandhinagar police station behind Pitru Parvat. The campaign has set a target of planting 51 lakh saplings. Seth praised Indore's commendable contribution to environmental conservation. "The Ek Ped Maa ke Naam and Ek Bagiya Maa ke Naam campaigns have spread the message of environmental conservation across India. Just as Indore has secured the top spot in cleanliness for the eighth consecutive time, it will also become a leading city in greenery and environmental efforts. Other cities in the country can follow Indore's example to achieve this status," he said. He added that Indore achieved a significant milestone last year by planting over 51 lakh trees. Urban development and housing minister Kailash Vijayvargiya urged citizens to plant a tree in their mother's name, care for it, and leave the gift of greenery for future generations. Garden in-charge Rajendra Rathore said that land was provided for the construction of a treated water pipeline and sump well to maintain the saplings planted by the BSF.
