Phillies' Jhoan Duran's X-Ray Comes Back Negative
Phillies fans worldwide collectively held their breath Friday night when relief pitcher Jhoan Duran went down with an injury. Manager Rob Thomson brought the closer in during the ninth inning against the Washington Nationals, where he was immediately hit in the foot with a line drive by Paul DeJong.
Duran would eventually have to be carted off, which is usually a sign of a long-term injury. It would be awful luck for the Phillies, who just acquired the former Minnesota Twin at the trade deadline a few weeks back.
Luckily, after some initial testing, there is much more optimism around Duran's health. The Phillies announced that his X-ray came back negative shortly after their game ended, so he will probably be back sooner rather than later.
However, Duran still isn't in the clear because he needs additional evaluation to determine the extent of his injury, if any. A negative X-ray typically rules out a broken bone, but the flamethrower could still have some soreness or less severe injury that could sideline him for a few days.
Overall, it's amazing news for a Phillies team who is already incredibly thin in the bullpen, which was their main inspiration for landing Duran. He had been lights out since the move to Philadelphia, earning a save in all four of his opportunities and allowing just two hits, one of which being the hit that injured him.
The Phillies are currently pitted against the New York Mets in a heated battle for the National League East title. Losing Duran for an extended period of time would have been difficult to overcome, but fortunately for Philadelphia, it doesn't look like that is much of a concern. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 16, 2025, where it first appeared.

Dillon Gabriel Throws Costly Interception in NFL Preseason Debut
Dillon Gabriel Throws Costly Interception in NFL Preseason Debut originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel has been one of the more interesting names to follow in the NFL preseason so far this year, with the drama of the Cleveland Browns quarterback competition unfolding before us. While Gabriel was sidelined in the first preseaon game of the year with a hamstring injury, he got the start in Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles. The early returns were great, with Gabriel nearly perfect throwing the ball, leading a 13-play touchdown drive on his first series under center. However, his second drive saw a costly mistake, with Gabriel forcing a pass and throwing a pick-six to Eagles rookie defensive back Andre Mukuba. Dillon Gabriel Preseason Stats Through the first half, Gabriel completed 13-of-18 passes for 91437 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. Following his interception, Gabriel led another scoring drive with a field goal, but the Browns' next drive ended in a fumble on a poor handoff exchange. Cleveland Browns Quarterback Competition Outlook There has been a lot of intrigue surrounding the Browns' QB competition, unsurprisingly. After drafting Gabriel in the third round, and Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round, a lot of fans have speculated as to who will ultimately be named the starter this season. There are also candidates like Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco, as well. Sanders got the start in the first preseason game of the year and looked great, completing 14-of-23 passes for 138 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also rushed for 19 yards in a 30-10 win over the Carolina Panthers. Sanders hurt his oblique this past week in practice, so he is unavailable to play in the preseason game on Saturday against the Eagles. There is some hope that he will be able to return next week, though, and play at least one more time before the preseason is over. We will see how much longer the Browns keep Gabriel out there on Saturday against the Eagles, but he has looked solid in spurts, with just a couple of inexcusable mistakes hurting his overall story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 16, 2025, where it first appeared.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — J.T. Realmuto hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the eighth inning, Kyle Schwarber and Bryson Stott also homered and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-4 on Tuesday night. Realmuto's homer was a no-doubt blast to left field on a first-pitch sinker from Seattle reliever Matt Brash (1-2). Realmuto, who hit his ninth homer, reached base three times and had three RBIs. He also had an RBI single and reached on a catcher's interference call on Mariners backstop Mitch Garver. It was the third time in a month the Phillies were on the positive side of a catcher's interference call. Schwarber opened the scoring in the first inning with his 44th homer. He leads the NL in homers and the majors with 104 RBIs. Stott hit his eighth homer of the season, and Bryce Harper drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. David Robertson (1-0) picked up the win in relief in his first appearance at Citizens Bank Park as a member of the Phillies since Game 5 of the 2022 World Series. Jhoan Duran pitched a perfect ninth for his his 22nd save and sixt5h with Philly since being acquired at the trade deadline. Randy Arozarena and Eugenio Suarez had RBI doubles for Seattle, which has lost four straight and six of seven. Bryce Miller was activated from the injured list before the game and made his first start since May 12 for the Mariners. He allowed four runs on five hits in five innings. MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh went 1 for 3 with a double and two walks for Seattle. Raleigh, with 47 homers is one shy of matching the MLB record for home runs in a season by a catcher. Key stat Philadelphia's Cristopher Sanchez matched his career high with 12 strikeouts, allowing two runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Up next Mariners RHP Luis Castillo (8-6, 3.48 ERA) starts Wednesday against Phillies LHP Jesus Luzardo (11-6, 4.21). ___
