Clive Lloyd on state of West Indies cricket: 'We must do all we can to revive it'

Time of India4 days ago
Former West Indies cricket captain
Clive Lloyd
had been invited to join an emergency summit alongside legends Viv Richards and
Brian Lara
. This comes after West Indies' shocking collapse for just 27 runs against Australia at Sabina Park and a 0-3 series loss at home.
The meeting aims to examine all aspects of West Indian cricket following one of their worst batting performances ever, nearly matching the lowest Test score of 26.
Lloyd quickly accepted the invitation from Cricket West Indies president Dr. Kishore Shallow. He stressed the need for urgent action to fix the team's batting problems in Test matches.

"We have to examine all aspects of West Indies cricket from grassroots to the international level," Lloyd said.
"Everything must be looked at closely and carefully. West Indies cricket is an institution. It has given so much to the people of this region and we must do all we can to revive it."
"I'm always available to help in any way. How we can marry the ideas we have with what is necessary and have healthy discussion on the way we move forward, that's what I'm thinking. It has been nearly 100 years since we have been playing top-class [Test] cricket and we have to get it right."
The recent series against Australia highlighted major batting concerns. Only Brandon King and Anderson Phillip averaged over 20. King's 75 in Grenada stood out as the highest score from either team.
Lloyd believes West Indies needs more batters who value their wickets. He wants players who can stay at the crease longer, like former player Larry Gomes.
"We need a couple of Larry Gomes, more batsmen like him," Lloyd said.
"We need batsmen who put a heavy price on their wickets and when they get in look to stay in. There is nothing wrong with digging in and 'batting ugly'. We have to find ways of fighting, occupying the crease, and staying in for long periods to wear down the bowlers. We have not been doing that.
"Obviously, the mental side of our game needs to improve. We have to go back to the basics. We have to look at schools' cricket, club cricket, first-class cricket - are we playing enough; we also have to look at the pitches - how are we preparing them and how they are playing."
Head coach Daren Sammy has acknowledged these batting issues. The team tried scoring faster when they struggled to bat long. However, Lloyd and Sammy both point to Caribbean pitch conditions as another problem needing attention.
West Indies have consistently ranked eighth in World Test Championship standings. They face tough upcoming away series in India and New Zealand.
This crisis meeting comes as CWI celebrates 50 years since their 1975 ODI World Cup victory, where Lloyd was captain and scored a match-winning century against Australia in the final.

ZIM vs SA: Rubin Hermann and Rassie van der Dussen help South Africa beat Zimbabwe

Rubin Hermann and Rassie van der Dussen (Proteas Men | X) South Africa secured a seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in their Twenty20 international tri-series match at Harare Sports Club on Sunday, thanks to Rubin Hermann's maiden international half-century of 63 runs off 36 balls. The win eliminated Zimbabwe from final contention and set up a championship match between South Africa and unbeaten New Zealand on Saturday. Zimbabwe batted first after losing the toss and managed to score 144 for six. Brian Bennett scored 61 runs and Ryan Burl remained unbeaten at 36, forming a crucial fourth-wicket partnership of 78 runs off 47 balls. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Hermann, making only his second appearance after debuting in the tournament opener, partnered with captain Rassie van der Dussen for a match-winning third-wicket stand of 106 runs. Van der Dussen finished unbeaten on 52 as South Africa reached their target with 16 balls remaining. "I was really chuffed with the bowling – 144 was never enough. We lost two early wickets so there was a little bit of early pressure but Rubin came in and played beautifully," said van der Dussen. India camp hit by more injuries, Playing XI TENSION before Manchester Test vs England South Africa, who previously lost to New Zealand in the round robin, will face them again on Tuesday before the final. "It's like a three-match series. Hopefully we can make it 1-1 on Tuesday and take it in the final," van der Dussen added. Zimbabwe's captain Sikandar Raza pointed out their disadvantage of batting first in all three matches. "But that's no excuse," he said of their batting performance. "There were a lot of dot balls. Getting bat on ball can go a long way to getting a good total." South Africa will now look to level the score against New Zealand in Tuesday's match before their final showdown on Saturday. BCCI Asked To Name New Coach For T20Is, Ex Star Wants Gautam Gambhir Relieved

Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to look at the possibility of having different coaches for Test and limited overs cricket. Currently, Gautam Gambhir is the all-format head coach of the team, having replaced Rahul Dravid at the helm last year. Harbhajan feels that having different coaches will allow both individuals to prepare for an assignment in a better way. He also suggested that having a single coach can lead to mental and physical fatigue since the individual is constantly travelling with the team. "Because your coach also needs time to prepare for a series. Like five Tests against Australia, then in England, then elsewhere. So the coach can prepare and set out what his team should be. The same goes for a white-ball coach. He will need time to prepare as well. If you overwork one coach for the whole year, he, too has a family and responsibilities. Traveling constantly with family isn't easy. So yes, if you ask me, splitting red-ball and white-ball coaching is a good move," Harbhajan told India Today. Harbhajan also suggested that if India can have different teams for different formats, they should also explore the idea of a coach each for Test cricket and limited-overs format. "I feel if it can be implemented, there is nothing wrong in it. You have different teams and different players for formats. If we can do it, it's a good option. It will reduce workload for everyone, including the coaches. So if it can happen, it isn't a bad option. The coach knows that focus is on T20 cricket," he added. Harbhajan said that someone like Ashish Nehra could be looked upon as a potential candidate to coach the T20I team. "Say if Ashish Nehra is the T20 coach, then he knows that his job is to make the Indian team champions in the T20 format, and Rahul Dravid knows he has to work on how the Indian team can be No.1 in Tests and ODIs," said Harbhajan.

‘You hit my father...': Harbhajan Singh reveals an heart-shattering encounter with Sreesanth's daughter

Harbhajan Singh (right) and S Sreesanth. Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh revealed an emotional conversation with the daughter of his former teammate S Sreesanth . Harbhajan opened up about how he was left shattered after she told him that she didn't want to talk to him because he had hit her father during the 2008 edition of the IPL. Harbhajan, playing for Mumbai Indians , had slapped Kings XI Punjab's (now Punjab Kings) Sreesanth at the end of a match. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'One thing I'd want to change in my life is that incident with Sreesanth. I want to remove that incident from my career,' Harbhajan said while speaking on R Ashwin's YouTube show Kutti Stories. 'That is the incident I would change from my list. What transpired was wrong, and I shouldn't have done what I did. I apologised 200 times. 'What I felt so bad about was that even years after that incident, I have been apologising every opportunity or stage I get. It was a mistake. We all make mistakes, and we hope and try never to repeat such mistakes. 'He was my teammate, and we were playing together. Yes, in that game we were opponents. But it shouldn't have gone to the level where we behaved in such a manner. EXCLUSIVE: Nitish Kumar Reddy ruled out of England Test series 'So yeah, that was my fault, and the only fault of his was that he provoked me — but that's okay, actually. However, what I did was not okay. I said, 'Sorry',' Harbhajan said. 'What hurt me even more, years later, was when I met his daughter. I was talking to her with a lot of love, and she said, 'I don't want to talk to you. You hit my father.' My heart was shattered, and I was on the verge of tears. 'I kept asking myself — what kind of impression have I left on her? She must be thinking of me in a poor light, right? She sees me as the guy who hit her father. 'I felt so bad. I still apologise to his daughter, knowing I can't undo what happened. I keep telling her, 'If there's anything I can do to make you feel better, or make you think I'm not that kind of person, please tell me.' 'I just hope that when she grows up, she doesn't see me in the same light. I hope she sees that her uncle is someone who will always be there for her and support her in any way he can. That's why I want to remove that chapter,' Harbhajan said. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
