Phillies place Bryce Harper on IL with wrist inflammation, call up undrafted Otto Kemp

The Philadelphia Phillies are 0-5 in the last five games Bryce Harper has had to miss, and they will now be without their star first baseman for at least another eight games as Harper was placed on the injured list Saturday morning with inflammation in his right wrist. Harper cannot return until June 16 at the earliest. The injury is not related to Harper's bruised right elbow suffered when Atlanta's Spencer Strider hit him with a 95 mph fastball, Phillies manager Rob Thomson told reporters in Pittsburgh. Advertisement However, Harper played through wrist soreness late last season, making it troublesome to see a recurrence now. The Phillies summoned Otto Kemp, a 25-year-old undrafted infielder, from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Kemp, who crushed minor-league pitching but is considered a below-average defender without a set position, could see time at first base. He's played mostly third base in the minors this season, although Alec Bohm is considered a much better defender there than Kemp. Kemp hit .313/.416/.594 in 269 plate appearances at Lehigh Valley this season, albeit with a 25 percent strikeout rate. He went 2-for-13 with a double, a homer, four walks and four strikeouts this week while Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski observed Lehigh Valley on a road trip to Charlotte. The last undrafted hitter signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent to reach the majors with them was infielder Jeff Grotewold, who had 75 plate appearances in 1992. (This does not count foreign players, who are not eligible to be drafted and are signed as amateur free agents.) Other undrafted amateurs have played in the majors with the Phillies — Chris Coste, originally signed by Pittsburgh, is one. Daniel Nava, Rod Barajas and Ramón Martínez — all signed by other organizations — are the only other draft-eligible but undrafted Phillies hitters in the last 30 years. Harper homered earlier this week in his first at-bat back in the Phillies' lineup, then went hitless in his next 10 at-bats with five strikeouts. He did not play Friday night, which was when the team first disclosed Harper was dealing with a wrist ailment. Harper is hitting .258/.368/.446 this season.

Steelers Trade Proposal Would Land Another Superstar for Aaron Rodgers

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After a long offseason of waiting for Aaron Rodgers, the Pittsburgh Steelers now have him as their starting quarterback for the 2025 NFL season. With him officially signing, the attention for the Steelers now turns to building the best contender possible around him. Earlier this offseason, the team pulled off a blockbuster trade to acquire star wide receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. More recently, they traded George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. Adding another wide receiver alongside of Metcalf would be a wise goal. Aaron Rodgers #8 of the New York Jets looks to pass during the third quarter against the Buffalo Bills at MetLife Stadium on October 14, 2024 in East Rutherford, New Jersey. PhotoWith that in mind, could Pittsburgh consider pursuing another blockbuster trade to add another star wide receiver? There might be an option for the team to pursue. Read more: Steelers, Aaron Rodgers Deal Sparks Firm Remarks From Former Teammate Bleacher Report analyst Kristopher Knox has suggested a potential trade between the Steelers and Washington Commanders that would see Terry McLaurin heading to Pittsburgh. In his suggested trade package, the Steelers would acquire McLaurin in exchange for a 2026 first-round pick and a 2027 fifth-round pick via the Cowboys. McLaurin could be made available by the Commanders. He is currently frustrated with the team over the lack of a new long-term contract. The two sides could work things out, but a trade could be on the table for the right price. Fox Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz recently reported on the situation, sharing McLaurin's current view on the franchise. "Commanders All-Pro WR Terry McLaurin has made it clear to the team that he's frustrated with the lack of progress on a long-term deal," Schultz wrote. "As I previously reported, McLaurin unexpectedly left voluntary workouts after initially attending, and it remains to be seen whether he'll report for mandatory minicamp." A duo of Metcalf and McLaurin would be nearly unstoppable. Rodgers would be working in a dream scenario for NFL quarterbacks. Read more: Vikings' Kevin O'Connell Speaks Out About Rumored Aaron Rodgers Interest During the 2024 NFL season with Washington, McLaurin played in all 17 regular-season games. He racked up 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns. While it's not likely that Pittsburgh will work out a trade for McLaurin, this idea makes a ton of sense. Giving Rodgers another elite weapon would improve the Steelers' championship chances greatly. Even though McLaurin isn't an incredibly likely option, Pittsburgh should look into another wide receiver. The last thing either Rodgers or the Steelers wants is to come up one piece short when the 2025 NFL season comes to an end. For more Pittsburgh Steelers and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Red Sox's Walker Buehler offers 'embarrassing' personal assessment after debacle against Yankees

Walker Buehler's first season with the Boston Red Sox has gotten off to an uneven start. He made his 10th start of the season on Friday at Yankee Stadium. The pitcher proceeded to deliver his worst performance of the year. Buehler sacrificed five earned runs and was able to complete just two innings. The Yankees eventually celebrated a 9-6 victory over their AL East division rivals. Buehler spent the first eight years of his major league career with the Los Angeles Dodgers and recorded the final out in Game 5 of the World Series. The Dodgers defeated the Yankees in five games to capture the franchise's second championship in the last five years. Buehler signed a lucrative one-year contract with the Red Sox. He offered a harsh critique of his latest underwhelming performance. "This organization put a lot of faith in me this offseason and I've been f-----g embarrassing for us," Buehler said, per After giving up five earned on Friday, Buehler's ERA jumped to 5.18. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022 and missed the entire 2023 season. While he largely struggled during the 2024 regular season, Buehler stepped up in the postseason for the Dodgers. He pitched multiple scoreless innings in the NLCS and World Series. Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm hit a three-run homer off Buehler in the first inning. He followed that up with an RBI single in the second. Buehler's overall record sits at 4-4, but he is 0-3 in his last three outings. Friday's loss dropped Boston's record to 30-35. The Red Sox enter Saturday's action in fourth place in the AL East. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X, and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
