Shannon Sharpe quips pockets are lighter after settling bombshell rape lawsuit before ESPN firing

New York Posta day ago
The fallout from Shannon Sharpe's turbulent year has apparently hit his wallet.
During Sunday's installment of the 'Nightcap' podcast, the NFL Hall of Famer — who was fired by ESPN on Wednesday, weeks after settling a bombshell $50 million lawsuit that accused him of rape — pressed co-host Chad 'Ochocinco' Johnson to pay him $5,900, including late fees, while comparing him to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
'I'll pay you when I get ready,' Sharpe said, mimicking Jones, who is currently engrossed in an ugly contract standoff with All-Pro linebacker Micah Parsons. 'Like you do me. Like you owe me [$]5,900. You basically told me, 'I'mma pay you when I get ready.'

Johnson hit back with, 'Oh no, I ain't say that.'

'Your actions did,' Sharpe said. 'We're coming up on a year. There's a penalty for being late.'
Johnson, who wasn't happy about being compared to Jones, vowed to repay Sharpe.

'I'm gonna take care of you, baby. I'm not Jerry, I don't like that comparison. Don't do me like that… I got you,' the former wide receiver said.

'See, you got it, but I need to get it,' Sharpe replied before looking down at his pockets. 'You know, pockets light right now, Ocho. Pockets light.'

That's when Johnson got up from his chair because he was laughing so hard.
'That's why I love you,' he said to Sharpe. 'That's what I need. C'mon back home to me. That's what I need. Thank you. That's the Shannon I need … We gon' be alright.'
Sharpe did not specifically mention the settlement with his sexual assault accuser.

The three-time Super Bowl champ, 57, overshadowed older brother Sterling Sharpe's Hall of Fame induction in Canton this past weekend, as his ESPN firing dominated headlines less than two weeks after the settlement.
During a Wednesday appearance on 'First Take' — the same day news of Sharpe's firing broke — Johnson, 47, said he'll be in the studio for the 2025 NFL season.
Sharpe had been off the air for ESPN since April.

Sharpe denied all allegations of coercion or misconduct in a statement through his counsel to The Post.
In her complaint, the plaintiff — who is more than 30 years younger than him — alleges Sharpe brutally sexually assaulted her several times at the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025.
Sharpe was sued a day before Front Office Sports reported that he was poised to sign a deal for his 'Club Shay Shay' podcast that would exceed $100 million after his contract with Colin Cowherd's The Volume podcast network expired.
He began appearing on 'First Take' in the fall of 2023 following his FS1 exit.

Lions haven't had "any intense talks" with Aidan Hutchinson yet

The Lions want to sign star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson to a contract extension, but they have not had any "intense talks" yet. 'Look, we'll definitely get some dialogue going soon here, but those things take time, especially the larger the deal is," General Manager Brad Holmes said Wednesday on 97.1 The Ticket. Holmes said at the Scouting Combine that the Lions were in the "planning stages" for a Hutchinson extension. Since then, edge rushers Maxx Crosby (three years, $106.5 million), Myles Garrett (four years, $160 million) and T.J. Watt (three years, $123 million) have signed extensions. Hutchinson is scheduled to make $5.575 million this year and $19.872 million in 2026 on the fifth-year option. In three seasons, he has 28.5 sacks and 65 quarterback hits. He played only five games last season before fracturing his tibia and fibula in a game against the Cowboys, but he has returned looking like himself. 'As the player, he's [Hutchinson] looked great,' Holmes said, via Ryan Mathews of 'I'm really not all that surprised just because of tracking him since college, since his early days at Michigan, he had that big injury [fractured ankle] at Michigan, and he came back, I think nobody would argue, a better player. I don't want to say it's exactly the same because the games haven't kicked off yet, but what he's showing in practice, the change of direction, the explosiveness. I mean, he's not [showing] any effects, but I'm not surprised when a guy like him has that kind of mindset.'

Myles Garrett: Shedeur Sanders works hard, takes his craft seriously

The Browns will start Shedeur Sanders at quarterback on Friday, giving him his first professional game action — albeit in the preseason. Star defensive end Myles Garrett was asked about his impressions of Sanders in his Wednesday press conference following Cleveland's joint practice with Carolina. Garrett has been spotted at times chatting with Sanders on the field between reps throughout training camp. 'I mean, he's funny, he's optimistic, lighthearted, but he works hard," Garrett said, via transcript from the team. "He takes it seriously, his craft and he's watching what the others are doing and doing it his own way, in which only he can. So, looking forward to see him on these preseason games and how he manages the offense. But I think he looks good, but all the guys look good right now. "[H]e's definitely coming to me a couple times to see what I'm thinking [when] I'm going through my rush or what the defense's mentality is.' A fifth-round pick in this year's draft, Sanders has mainly been working with the second- and third-team offense during training camp. Those are the players he'll be on the field with on Friday night, as head coach Kevin Stefanski said the plan is to rest most starters after they received most of the reps in Wednesday's joint practice.

Old friends, new rivals: 49ers set for reunion with Greenlaw and Hufanga

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — It will be reunion week for the San Francisco 49ers when they welcome some old friends for a joint practice and exhibition game against the Denver Broncos. Denver signed away two of San Francisco's top defensive players in the offseason, giving big deals to linebacker Dre Greenlaw and safety Talanoa Hufanga. 'I love seeing them," Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said ahead of the joint practice. "I don't really like practicing or playing against guys that I really like and have a lot of love for, but I (will) enjoy seeing them.' Greenlaw and Hufanga are not the only prominent former 49ers now playing in Denver. Defensive tackle D.J. Jones is entering his fourth season with the Broncos after starting his career in San Francisco and former Niners first-round tackle Mike McGlinchey is in his third season with the Denver. Greenlaw and Hufanga will likely get the most attention this week. Greenlaw was the emotional leader of San Francisco's defense since being drafted in 2019 and the torn Achilles tendon that knocked him out of the Super Bowl following the 2023 season and most of last season played a big role in San Francisco's defensive decline. Hufanga, a fifth-round pick in 2021, was an All-Pro the following season before injuries hampered him in his final two seasons with the Niners. Both got lucrative contracts in free agency that San Francisco was unwilling to match as the Niners spent the offseason trying to get younger and cheaper on defense. The new-look defense that could feature as many as eight new starters this season gets one of its first big tests this week and defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is excited to see how his young players fare. 'The challenge now is going to be a completely new opponent with no preparation because we're not preparing for Denver,' Saleh said. 'We're just lining up. Just throwing it on the field and seeing how they play. So, we're really excited to see how it goes and fully expecting some lumps along the way. But one thing is for certain, I do think that their competitive drive is going to be there.' Shanahan typically likes joint practices but had to cancel his only session last summer against New Orleans because the Niners were dealing with too many injuries. San Francisco also will hold a one-day joint practice next week before playing the Las Vegas Raiders. 'I think it's really valuable,' Shanahan said. "Sometimes you can't do it. I'd always would like to do it. I'm more excited just going against someone once. In the past I've always done two days, and I'm always really excited by the end of the first day. I'm always wishing we didn't have to go the second day. So, kind of glad we're ahead of that on this. It's always good to go against different schemes too. Different players. We're going against each other every day. Same guys, same scheme. It gets a little bit old and it's a good way to switch it up.' Shanahan said the second day of joint practices sometimes leads to fights as the team that fared worse on the first day comes out more aggressive on day two. Shanahan said he and Broncos coach Sean Payton will script out the session ahead of time and that Denver will offer a stiff challenge thanks to one of the league's top defenses and a strong offensive line. 'I think the Broncos have a very good team,' Shanahan said. "They were sneaky good last year. You could see them improve throughout the whole year. They got a bunch of good, young talent and they had a bunch of good players already. So, I expect them to be one of the better teams in the league this year.' ___ AP NFL:
