Frank Caprio, US judge who found fame online for his compassion, dies aged 88
Frank Caprio, a retired municipal judge in Rhode Island who found online fame for his compassionate nature as host of the reality courtroom series Caught in Providence, has died aged 88. Caprio's official social media accounts said that he 'passed away peacefully' after 'a long and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer'. The judge billed his courtroom as a place 'where people and cases are met with kindness and compassion'. Caprio's show was filmed in his courtroom and featured his folksy humour and compassion. Clips from the show have attracted more than 1bn views on social media. During his time on the bench, Caprio developed a persona at odds with many other TV judges – more sympathetic and less confrontational . He also used his fame to address issues such as unequal access to the judicial system. 'The phrase 'with liberty and justice for all' represents the idea that justice should be accessible to everyone. However, it is not,' Caprio says in one video. 'Almost 90% of low-income Americans are forced to battle civil issues like health care, unjust evictions, veterans benefits and, yes, even traffic violations, alone.' His most popular videos are those in which he calls children to the bench to help pass judgment on their parents. One shows him listening sympathetically to a woman whose son was killed and then dismissing her tickets and fines of $400. Caprio's family described him 'as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend'. 'Beloved for his compassion, humility, and unwavering belief in the goodness of people, Judge Caprio touched the lives of millions through his work in the courtroom and beyond,' the family wrote online. 'His warmth, humor, and kindness left an indelible mark on all who knew him.' State and local politicians mourned his passing. 'Judge Caprio not only served the public well, but he connected with them in a meaningful way, and people could not help but respond to his warmth and compassion,' the Rhode Island governor, Dan McKee, said in a statement. 'He was more than a jurist – he was a symbol of empathy on the bench, showing us what is possible when justice is tempered with humanity.' Caprio retired from Providence municipal court in 2023 after nearly four decades on the bench. Sign up to First Thing Our US morning briefing breaks down the key stories of the day, telling you what's happening and why it matters after newsletter promotion According to his biography, Caprio came from humble beginnings, the second of three boys growing up in the Federal Hill neighbourhood of Providence, Rhode Island. 'I hope that people will take away that the institutions of government can function very well by exercising kindness, fairness, and compassion in their deliberations. We live in a very contentious society,' he said in 2017. 'I would hope that people will see that we can dispense justice without being oppressive.'

Jay Cutler denies Kristin Cavallari didn't receive money in divorce
During the June 18 episode of "Honestly Cavallari," the "Laguna Beach" alum, 38, reportedly debunked speculation that Cutler funded her beauty and apparel brand Uncommon James. "People love to say that everything I have in my life is because of my ex-husband," she said, per People magazine and NBC News affiliate KRNV. "I have never gotten a penny from my ex-husband," Cavallari added. "I didn't get any money from our divorce, so let's just clear that up." Cutler, 42, pushed back against his ex-wife's comments on the Aug. 15 episode of his podcast, "Take it Outside with Jay Cutler and Sam Mackey," joking: "Yeah, she didn't get a penny. She got a lot, a lot, a lot of (dollar) bills." "It's irresponsible. I think it's reckless," Cutler continued. "It's borderline slander to insinuate that there was zero dollars split during the marriage that each side got." USA TODAY has reached out to Cavallari's representative for comment. In April 2020, Cavallari announced her split from Cutler in an Instagram post, writing, "With great sadness, after 10 years together we have come to a loving conclusion to get a divorce." According to People magazine and the former couple later reached a child custody agreement, which allowed Cavallari to use "marital funds" to purchase a home for herself. Kristin Cavallari interview: 'Laguna Beach' alum is open to talking about anything, except her ex-husband. How much money did Kristin Cavallari receive from Jay Cutler divorce? While Cutler didn't go into details about how much money was allotted to Cavallari in their divorce settlement, the Chicago Bears alum said, "I can guarantee you it's definitely not zero dollars." "You can go and see how much I made in the NFL. It's online," said Cutler, who reportedly earned $122.2 million across 12 seasons. "If we would have went to the judge and been like, 'Hey, he's going to keep every single dollar over the past seven years, and you're going to get nothing,' ... they would have been like, 'No, this isn't right. This isn't legal. Not happening.' " Kristin Cavallari talks Jay Cutler: TV personality says she was 'skin and bones' during 'unhappy' marriage When asked by cohost Sam Mackey if the settlement money is enough to live "comfortably" on, Cutler replied, "without a doubt." "It's insanity. It's completely false, completely untrue. It just is. I've got a divorce decree," Cutler said. "(I) hate that I even have to address it, honestly, but it gets to a point where it's just untrue." Contributing: Jay Stahl, USA TODAY
