Poyet blasts AFC ahead of Sydney battle

Yahoo12-03-2025
Jeonbuk Motors coach Gus Poyet has lashed out at the Asian Football Confederation ahead of his South Korean club's AFC Champions League Two battle with Sydney FC, saying it's 'not worth' being in the competition.
Poyet's team has plenty of work to do on Thursday night at Allianz Stadium, having lost last week's quarter-final first-leg 2-0 to the impressive Sky Blues.
Not helping Jeonbuk's cause last week, according to former Chelsea and Tottenham star Poyet, was not able to play the club's home leg at its own stadium because the AFC was unhappy with the pitch.

'I'm really looking forward to seeing the pitch of Sydney … because I wasn't able to play at home for a really unfair and stupid decision so I hope the pitch is spot on,' the 57-year-old former Uruguay international said.
'If your pitch is worse than our pitch at home, what is the outcome? Why is that fair?
'Sydney beat us and were better than us on the day. It was nothing to do with the referee but it's not 50-50 this qualification round.
'It's happening with too many things. Why? I don't know if you've been to Jeonju. You need to go Seoul and drive three hours and it was very cold.
'(The AFC official from Indonesia) probably thought `do I want someone from the AFC, the commissioner, to come here? No, I'll make a report and we play somewhere near Seoul'.
'Our pitch was in perfect condition to play.
'You know how many people were at the first leg? (The crowd was) 2500 in the quarter-finals of the Champions League (Two). It's not worth it.
'If the Asian federation wants to play Champions League Two at the highest level, they (must) pay attention to what they do (and be) fair to the decisions they make or it's not worth it to play it.
'You want to play in equal situations and it's not equal.'

Poyet – whose other head coaching roles have includes stints with Brighton, Sunderland and the Greek national team – also blasted the AFC for being Wednesday's pre-match press conferences being held at Sydney's training base rather than Allianz Stadium, where Jeonbuk trained that night.
It meant extra travel the day before the game for him and one of his players.
'Someone decided who doesn't understand the rules of football to be fair,' he said.
'We're talking about the other side of football, the side I don't like. The politics, the decision makers of people who don't understand football, who don't have a clue.'
'When common sense goes against me, I use common sense. I'm not picking and choosing, I'm being honest with you.'

Grealish looks to reignite his career after joining Everton on a season-long loan deal from Man City

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — England midfielder Jack Grealish will look to reignite his career after joining Everton on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City on Tuesday. The 29-year-old Grealish, one of the poster boys of English soccer, became the country's most expensive player after a 2021 move from Aston Villa to City for 100 million pounds (then $139 million). He was a regular pick in City's historic 2022-23 season when the team won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup. However, Grealish has fallen out of favor over the last two seasons, not even making City's squad for the recent Club World Cup, and has chosen to move to Everton for a season ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America. 'I'm over the moon to have signed for Everton - it's massive for me, honestly,' Grealish said. 'This is a great club, with great fans." The loan switch removes not only a high-earner from City's wage bill but also one of the many attacking midfielders built up in City's stacked squad. Grealish often had a free, roaming role when making his name at Villa, but had to be more disciplined and restricted as a left-sided forward in City manager Pep Guardiola's system of play. Everton manager David Moyes will try to get the best out of Grealish again, with the team's first match of the Premier League season at Leeds on Monday. 'As soon as I spoke to the manager, I knew there was only one place that I wanted to go,' Grealish said. ___

Travis Kelce vows to return to elite level in 2025: 'These past two years haven't been to my standard'

By most standards, the Kansas City Chiefs had a tremendous season in 2024. The team went 15-2, earned the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs and rode that success all the way to the Super Bowl. Under the surface, though, there were signs the team's excellence was overstated. The Chiefs barely won a number of close games during the regular season and, despite being the best player in football, Patrick Mahomes failed to put up MVP numbers despite the team trying to give him some new weapons. All of that seemed to get exposed in the Super Bowl, where the Chiefs were trounced 40-22 by the Philadelphia Eagles. Star tight end Travis Kelce knows he was part of that problem. After a decade of dominance, Kelce has seen his numbers decline in recent years. With the Chiefs' pass catchers plagued by injuries last season, Kelce should have turned in a monster year. Instead, he finished with his lowest yardage and touchdown total since his rookie season, when he played in one game. His own struggles, combined with the Super Bowl loss, weighed heavy on Kelce, who told GQ he's committed to getting back to an elite level in 2025. 'Win a Super Bowl is the only goal,' Kelce says. 'It's the only goal. It's every goal.' It's been nearly four months since that defeat, and Kelce is still hard on himself about it. 'I think it might have slipped a little bit because I did have a little bit more focus in trying to set myself up. And opportunities came up where I was excited to venture into a new world of acting and being an entertainer,' he says. 'I don't say this as 'I shouldn't have done it.' I'm just saying that my work ethic is such that I have so much pride in how I do things that I never want the product to tail off, and I feel like these past two years haven't been to my standard.' He adds, 'I just have such a motivation to show up this year for my guys.' Kelce admitted he might have "slipped a little bit" due to focusing on things outside football. Kelce has been involved in quite a bit in the entertainment realm in recent years. His "New Heights" podcast with his brother took off and is among the most popular sports podcasts around, he took on an acting role on "Grotesquerie" and hosted "Saturday Night Live." During that period, he also started dating pop superstar Taylor Swift, who he discussed in the GQ profile. Kelce's love and admiration for Swift come through in the piece, and Kelce also talks about how he got Swift to really love football. 'I sort of made her a football fan,' Kelce says. 'She is the most engulfed fan now. She knows what the injury reports look like. She understands what special situations are, third and short—all these things because she just naturally loves to hear about my job.' Whether Kelce is able to return to an elite level at his job remains to be seen. He's already put himself among the best tight ends to ever play the game and is easily one of the best football players of his era. But Kelce will turn 36 during the 2025 NFL season, and it's possible his recent decline is more related to age than commitment. Given Kelce's greatness, though, it's foolish to bet against him turning in at least one more phenomenal season before he hangs up his cleats. It certainly sounds like he's working hard to make that a reality.

The 5 games that could define Barcelona's 2025/26 season

The 5 games that could define Barcelona's 2025/26 season originally appeared on The Sporting News Barcelona claimed the 2024/25 La Liga title in head coach Hansi Flick's first season in charge. Along with their success in the league, Barcelona also bagged the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana last campaign. With a couple of additions to the squad in the ongoing summer transfer window, the Catalan club will be looking to defend their domestic treble in the upcoming campaign as well as lift their first Champions League trophy since 2014–15. However, there could be some crucial fixtures that decide Barcelona's fate in the 2025/26 campaign. The Sporting News takes a look at the five league fixtures that could define Barcelona's upcoming league season. Real Madrid (Away) - October 26, 2025 The first El Clasico of the season is always a major event, and for the 2025/26 campaign, Barcelona will be making the trip to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on October 26. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Barcelona have not been on the receiving end of much success at Santiago Bernabeu, with 24 wins in 95 league games there as opposed to Real Madrid's 56 victories. While they may not have a good away record against Los Blancos in La Liga, Barca won all four matches across competitions against Real Madrid last season and would be looking forward to pulling off similar results in the upcoming season. RCD Espanyol (Away) - January 04, 2026 Another great historical rivalry in Spanish football includes the one between Barcelona and Espanyol. Any match between the two clubs is referred to as Derbi Barceloni, and the first one of the upcoming season is slated for January 4 next year at RCDE Stadium. Barcelona have bagged 19 victories in 33 league games at RCDE Stadium, while Espanyol have managed 10 wins. Atletico de Madrid (Away) - April 05, 2026 Atletico de Madrid ranked third in the La Liga table last season, maintaining their stance as potential title contenders in the majority of the past campaigns. Barcelona's away record against Atletico in La Liga has not been very impressive so far, with 28 wins in 88 games as opposed to the home side's 39 victories. Atletico will be hosting Barcelona at the Metropolitano Stadium on April 5, 2026. With the match being scheduled in the concluding months of the La Liga season, the Catalans would be hoping to walk away with three points at the final whistle. RCD Espanyol (Home) - April 12, 2026 The return derby of the 2025/26 season will be held at the newly renovated Camp Nou on April 12. Barcelona have 23 victories in 33 home league games against Espanyol, who have managed only three wins. The league match between Barca and Espanyol is anticipated to be a key fixture, especially as it is in the final stretch of the season. Real Madrid (Home) - May 10, 2026 The second and last El Clasico of the 2025/26 La Liga season will be hosted by Barcelona on May 10, 2026. Barca have 52 league wins at home against Real Madrid, who have secured 23 in 95 games. Being one of the last matches of the season, it will be an important contest for both sides, on top of the usual significance of the Spanish rivalry.
