
Rolls-Royce aims to become UK's biggest company by market value
The company's chief executive Tufan Erginbilgic said that that could be achieved by a take-off in demand for small modular nuclear reactors for local power stations being commissioned to build to secure the nation's energy sovereignty.
The ambition of Erginbilgic, who took over at the Derby-based group in 2023, would need to see Rolls-Royce nearly double its market capitalisation to overtake AstraZeneca, the pharmaceuticals group worth just shy of £172 billion. Rolls-Royce's market capitalisation is £92 billion.
If it is to claim the scalp, Rolls-Royce would need to pass several other colossi of the UK corporate scene on the way: HSBC, Europe's biggest bank, is valued on the stock market at £163 billion, oil and gas major Shell has a value of £155 billion and Unilever, the consumer goods group, is at £110 billion. British American Tobacco currently remains marginally ahead of Rolls-Royce at £93 billion.
Erginbilgic said Rolls-Royce has the 'potential' to become top dog because of its pivot into civil nuclear, using its technology developed for Britain's nuclear submarine fleet to build out local power stations with small modular reactors (SMRs). It has already signed deals with the UK and Czech governments.
'There is no private company in the world with the nuclear capability we have,' Erginbilgic told the BBC. 'If we are not market leader globally, we did something wrong.'
He said Rolls-Royce is chasing a $1 trillion-plus market in SMRs which he reckons will see 400 of them installed worldwide by 2050 at a current cost of £2.2 billion apiece.
The Rolls-Royce boss said the need for SMR installations is becoming particularly acute because of the need to power the data centres that will facilitate mass adoption of artificial intelligence.
Rolls-Royce shares have already risen tenfold since Erginbilgic took over in January 2023 with the stock rising from 93p to the current £10.82.
The chief executive famously called the company a 'burning platform' when he arrived and set about turbocharging the reforms of the company begun under his predecessor Warren East, who had weathered the Covid-19 crisis. Other storms have swept the business, including record fines for bribery and corruption across five continents; and billions of pounds to repair design and durability issues with the Trent 1000 engines for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
Erginbilgic swept out much of the previous management and set about creating a regime in which the company would refuse to accept second best on pricing power for its engines for Boeing, Airbus and business jets, or on manufacturing efficiency.
Since he took over Erginbilgic has seen Rolls-Royce overtake in market capitalisation terms the likes of his old oil and gas employer BP, fellow defence company BAE Systems, Barclays bank and Rio Tinto the miner.

A star of Dragons' Den is increasing her stake in the crafting company she founded as the owner of WH Smith sells its holding in the business. Sara Davies, a panellist on the popular BBC show, has increased her holding in Crafter's Companion after joining efforts to turn around the company when it filed for administration earlier this year. Davies, 41, founded the business from her bedroom at York University and built it into an international seller of paper craft, art and sewing products, with a reported valuation of more than £25 million in 2019. She returned as chief executive of Crafter's Companion earlier this year when it was sold through a fast-track pre-pack administration to Modella Capital, the investment firm that has since purchased the WH Smith store portfolio. Modella has now sold its interest to Maven Capital Partners, an investment firm headquartered in Glasgow, and Davies, who founded the company 20 years ago. Crafter's Companion swung back to profitability in May following Davies's return. She is now standing down as chief executive and will hand over day-to-day running of the business to Diane Sharp, who was initially brought in as a financial controller and was subsequently promoted to managing director. The company is opening a warehouse in the US in the coming weeks as its products were caught by the Trump administration's decision to end a tariff exemption on imports of goods valued at $800 or less. Davies had stayed as a non-executive with Crafter's Companion when it was sold to Growth Partner, a long-term backer, in 2024. She said the business lost its way when the new management team brought in to run the company shifted its focus from die-hard crafters towards a more general audience. She told The Times: 'We are excellent in our product development and our biggest investment in our company is in product development. They radically cut our product development teams down and wanted to source off-the-shelf product from China. 'Our customers are generally older, retired ladies who have time on their hands and plenty of money. The strategy pivot went after a much broader audience. And in my eyes, we have no right to win there. We don't compete on price; we deliver exceptional products which are at the higher end of the market.' The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed but it is understood that Davies will significantly increase her minority shareholding in the business, with Maven owning a majority stake.

Jewellery chain Claire's UK business falls into administration with 2,150 jobs at risk
LONDON, Aug 13 (Reuters) - More than 2,150 jobs are at risk after the UK business of struggling jewellery chain Claire's called in administrators. Insolvency practitioners Interpath said on Wednesday they had been appointed joint administrators to Claire's Accessories UK Ltd, the operator of Claire's 306 stores across the UK and Ireland. The move comes a week after its parent filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States. Headquartered in Birmingham, central England, Claire's is known for its trend-led accessories and as a destination for ear piercing. The administrators said they intend to continue to trade the business while they assess its options, including exploring the possibility of a sale as a going concern. As such, all UK and Ireland stores will remain open. However, customers will no longer be able to place orders online. 'Over the coming weeks, we will endeavour to continue to operate all stores as a going concern for as long as we can, while we assess options for the Company," Will Wright, Interpath's UK CEO, said. "This includes exploring the possibility of a sale which would secure a future for this well-loved brand."

Power producer Origin surges to over 10-year high on positive retail outlook
Aug 14 (Reuters) - Australian power producer Origin Energy ( opens new tab signalled higher operating earnings at its energy retailing segment in the coming year on Thursday after reporting better-than-expected 2025 earnings, sending its shares to the highest in over a decade. The country's largest gas and electricity retailer forecast underlying operating earnings from its Energy Markets division between A$1.4 billion and A$1.7 billion ($916.4 million–$1.11 billion) in fiscal 2026. The mid-point of that range is slightly ahead of the Visible Alpha consensus estimate of A$1.53 billion, and higher than the A$1.4 billion reported in 2025. The upbeat guidance sent Origin's shares more than 7% higher in early trade to A$12.72, their highest since November 7, 2014. It was among the top gainers in the ASX 200 benchmark index (.AXJO), opens new tab, which was up 0.6% as of 0010 GMT. "The outlook for FY26 is positive," said CEO Frank Calabria. Electricity gross profit is expected to be relatively stable, while gas gross profit is expected to improve moderately in FY26, the power producer said. "Earnings in the core utility business were slightly ahead of market expectations and are likely to grow in FY26 on investment in batteries and cost-out initiatives," said Adrian Atkins, senior equities analyst at Morningstar. Origin's 2025 underlying profit rose to A$1.49 billion from A$1.18 billion a year earlier, topping Visible Alpha's estimate of A$1.46 billion. Stronger trading gains in the integrated gas division — which includes Origin's stake in the Australia Pacific LNG (APLNG) project in Queensland — drove a 13% earnings lift, offsetting weakness in the retail energy segment. Another factor was the lower income tax expense as a result of APLNG paying Origin A$797 million fully franked dividends, compared with largely unfranked A$1.38 billion dividends it received last year. Franked dividends carry credits from tax paid by companies, reducing shareholders' liability to avoid double taxation.
