
Will the new Middle East crisis rock the world economy? The markets say no – but I fear they're wrong
This is where modern summitry came in half a century ago. In 1975, the first meeting of what eventually became the G7 was convened at Rambouillet in France in an attempt to work out a joint response to the oil shock that accompanied the Yom Kippur war between Israel and its neighbours.
Back then, the impact of higher crude prices was immediate and brutal. The cost of crude rose fourfold in a matter of months and killed off the post-second world war boom, leading first to higher inflation and then to recession. A second dose of stagflation arrived a few years later when the Iran-Iraq war led to a further doubling of oil prices. Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990 again led to higher oil prices and weaker activity. History suggests the Middle East can cause all sorts of problems for the global economy.
The response to the latest conflict has been much more muted. Oil prices have risen by about $10 a barrel but that will give only a modest upward jolt to inflation and certainly nothing to compare with the shocks of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. At least so far. The region has form and given the risks, the financial markets are taking a remarkably sanguine view of events, even though there are reasons for a moderate degree of optimism.
The first oil shock of the mid-1970s was triggered by an embargo orchestrated by Opec, a producers' cartel that is less able to affect crude prices than it was half a century ago. Some countries – the US in particular – are much less dependent on imported oil than they once were. Wind and solar power provide alternatives to fossil fuels. The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has been raging for almost two years, with only a small and short-lived impact on oil prices.
All that said, it is less than three years since Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to a surge in global oil and gas prices, contributing to a cost of living crisis that is only just abating. The latest UK inflation figures released on Wednesday showed the annual increase in prices at 3.4% – well down on the recent 10.9% peak but still above the Bank of England's 2% target.
The comparison between the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022 and Israel's attacks in the past week is not exact. Russia accounts for 17% of global gas production, while Iran is responsible for just 4% of oil production and China is the biggest customer for its crude exports. That helps explain why the financial markets have been relatively relaxed, with the $10 a barrel boost to oil prices reflecting a sense that the conflict will be contained.
The US's potential involvement raises the stakes. One possibility is that the deployment of US military firepower will quickly overcome Iran's resistance and lead to regime change in Tehran. Another is that Iran will retaliate by seeking to close the strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage through which 20% of the world's oil passes daily. That would send the price of oil rocketing from its current $75 a barrel to well over $100 a barrel. The shock would be more severe and longer lasting were Russia and China to get dragged into the conflict.
The markets are betting that none of this happens. Oil prices are at their current level because dealers think Iran has had its military capability depleted by Israel's attacks, that Iran would damage its own economy by seeking to close the strait of Hormuz, and that Russia and China will be wary of becoming involved.
Things may indeed pan out this way, but the call by the non-US members of the G7 for a de-escalation of the crisis highlights the real risk that it might not. Western economies are still feeling the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, higher energy prices and a cost of living crisis, and could well do without another setback. Petrol prices are already set to rise, the first evidence of higher inflation and a fresh squeeze on disposable incomes. It goes without saying that it would be better for the global economy to avoid yet another Middle East oil shock.
But if the financial markets have called it wrong and oil prices do start to spiral upwards, it is important that policymakers don't panic. Higher energy prices are initially inflationary but are then deflationary because they add to business costs and leave consumers with less money to spend. Central banks should resist the temptation to respond by raising interest rates because that would only add to the risks of recession and higher unemployment. Likewise, finance ministers should avoid raising taxes or cutting spending if weaker activity pushes the public finances deeper into the red.
In the longer term, countries like the UK need to make themselves self-sufficient in renewable energy and thus reduce their exposure to the Middle East's fossil fuels. The lesson to be drawn from the damage caused by the repeated oil shocks since the 1970s is that we have been here before and it doesn't end well.

Man Scottie Scheffler drafted in to caddie for him earns eyewatering sum of money for four days' work
Scottie Scheffler may have been without Ted Scott on his bag once again at the weekend but the caddie's replacement stepped up just fine. The world No 1 was without his mainstay caddie as he teed it up at the BMW Championship last week after Scott had to leave the PGA Tour playoffs to rush back home to Louisiana for a family emergency earlier this month. However, unfortunately for his fellow pros, even that couldn't stop the recent Open champion as he rolled to yet another victory with substitute bagman Michael Cromie. And after stepping in for duty, Cromie, who usually caddies for six-time PGA Tour winner Chris Kirk, walked away from Caves Valley Golf Club with an eyewatering payday. Scheffler claimed the BMW Championship's staggering $3.6 million prize money for the victory - his fifth of the season - and in doing so, paid out a hefty sum to his replacement caddie. In golf it is customary for players to award their caddies a 10 percent cut of their winnings from tournaments, meaning, if Scheffler follows the rule, Cromie likely walked away with a $360,000 paycheck. That figure already surpasses what Cromie would have already banked for the entire 2025 season so far. The 33-year-old has been on the bag for Kirk since 2020 with the Tour professional pocketing $2,939,050 this season, according to the PGA Tour's official money list. The average on Tour is $1,977,255. However, American player failed to make the cut for the restricted 50-man field at the BMW Championship, that only sees the top players in the FedEx Cup standings compete before being whittled down again to 30 for this week's Tour Championship. Kirk agonizingly fell short, finishing 51st in the rankings and just one spot our of the BMW Championship's exclusive field. However, his exclusion freed up Cromie to caddie for Scheffler, who came from behind to win the tournament Sunday, beating Robert MacIntyre by two strokes in Maryland. 'He's a guy I can trust,' Scheffler told reporters or Cromie following Sunday's victory. 'He's one of Ted's good buddies. I'd just say it's pretty much as simple as that. Cromie is a guy that works hard. He does his prep work, and he was an easy guy for me to trust out there.' Scheffler added, 'I felt like we did a good job of talking through our shots and staying patient and keep doing the right things even when things were looking a little bit squirrelly there on the back nine. 'We did a good job of staying focused and continuing to hit shots at the right targets. Closed the tournament out nicely.' Scheffler will now head to East Lake where a massive $10 million prize awaits for the Tour's champion. However, it remains unclear whether Scott will return to Scheffler's bag n time for the Tour Championship, which tees off in Atlanta, Georgia on Thursday, or whether Cromie will be called upon yet again. Scheffler acknowledged Scott's absence at the weekend but refused to divulge any details surrounding his trip home. 'Ted is at home with his family, and he's where he's supposed to be,' Scheffler told reporters. 'We're praying for them, and his family is doing all right. Cromie did a great job this week. It's not easy stepping in and trying to fill in for Ted. Those are some big shoes to fill.' If Cromie does stay on Scheffler's bag this week, it could turn into a lucrative couple of weeks' work if the four-time major winner maintains his usual imperious form. Said form has earned Scott an eye-watering amount over the past few years - more than most players Ahead of last week's tournament, Scheffler had already banked $20.36m in tournament prize money, giving Scott just over $2m for himself.

Trump blames Ukraine for ‘taking on nation 10 times your size' despite Russia being the one that invaded
President Donald Trump blamed Ukraine 'for taking on a nation that's 10 times' its size — despite it being Russian President Vladimir Putin who invaded the country. The president was speaking on Fox & Friends Tuesday morning, where he was gently quizzed about Monday's meeting at the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders following last week's Alaska summit with Putin. Co-host Ainsley Earhardt asked Trump whether any land swaps between the warring countries were discussed at Monday's meeting, to which the president responded by saying that Ukraine would 'get a lot of land,' before he launched into a ramble about Russia's military might. 'Russia is a powerful military nation. You know, whether people like it or not, it's a powerful nation. It's a much bigger nation,' Trump said. 'It's not a war that should have been started. You don't do that. You don't take on a nation that's 10 times your size. 'If it wasn't for the greatest military equipment, we make the greatest military equipment in the world. And we gave them, you know… whatever they took probably a lot of money too,' Trump added. Russia invaded Ukraine in March 2022. Trump has repeatedly blamed the conflict on his predecessors, former presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama, but not Putin. 'The thing is a mess. This was started by Joe Biden,' Trump told the network. 'This was a war that should have never happened.' The president also lashed out at Obama and claimed he 'gave Crimea away' in 2014 in 'the worst real estate deal I've ever seen.' Obama has faced criticism in the past for 'underestimating' the threat from Russia and how his administration handled the 2014 invasion of Ukraine, where Putin illegally annexed the peninsula of Crimea. The former president previously defended himself against the backlash and said the circumstances were not the same as the 2022 invasion. After greeting Putin warmly in Alaska last week, Trump touted his 'very good relationship' with the Russian strongman but told Fox & Friends his priority was getting a deal. 'I called President Putin yesterday, and I do have a good relationship, but it, you know, only matters if we get things done,' he said. 'Otherwise, I don't care about the relationship. I do have a good relationship with him, but I want to get things done.' At Monday's historic meeting with Zelensky and European leaders— including U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte—Trump gave a commitment of American resources to support the future security of Ukraine. 'Everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE for Russia/Ukraine,' Trump wrote on Truth Social following Monday's meetings. Trump said he called Putin himself and they 'began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelensky.' 'After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself,' Trump said. 'Again, this was a very good, early step for a War that has been going on for almost four years.'

US President Donald Trump has said American jets could help defend Ukraine if there is a deal to end the war but acknowledged it was possible Russian President Vladimir Putin would reject a peace plan. He said it would be a 'rough situation' if Mr Putin failed to agree peace terms but stressed that Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky had to show flexibility, including giving up hopes of getting Crimea back or joining Nato. The US president's comments came as Sir Keir Starmer held talks with members of the 'coalition of the willing', the nations prepared to contribute to guaranteeing Ukraine's security if a deal to end the Russian invasion can be reached. The Prime Minister and Mr Zelensky were among European leaders who travelled to Washington on Monday for talks at the White House. Those discussions have paved the way for a potential meeting between Mr Zelensky and Mr Putin for the first time since the Russian leader invaded his neighbour in 2022. Mr Trump told Fox News: 'I hope President Putin is going to be good and if he's not, that's going to be a rough situation. 'And I hope that Zelensky, President Zelensky, will do what he has to do. He has to show some flexibility.' The UK and France have pledged to commit forces to Ukraine to deter Mr Putin from launching a fresh assault on his neighbour if a deal is done to end the war. Mr Trump said they were 'willing to put people on the ground', and added: 'We're willing to help them with things, especially probably if you could talk about by air, because there's nobody has the kind of stuff we have.' But he suggested that Mr Putin was unlikely to launch another invasion as he was 'tired of it' after three years of war. 'We are going to find out about President Putin in the next couple of weeks, that I can tell you,' Mr Trump said, acknowledging that it was 'possible he doesn't want to make a deal'. Sir Keir said work with the US on what the security guarantees would entail could start as soon as Tuesday. He said there was a 'real significant breakthrough when it comes to security guarantees, because we're now going to be working with the US on those security guarantees'. Sir Keir told the BBC that teams from both sides of the Atlantic were starting 'the detailed work on that'. The Prime Minister co-chaired a call on Tuesday morning of the so-called 'coalition of the willing', the group of nations he has been leading with France's President Emmanuel Macron. Mr Trump spoke directly to Mr Putin to begin planning a meeting between the Russian leader and Mr Zelensky while hosting the gathering on Monday, which will then be followed by a three-way meeting involving himself. The US president said Moscow will 'accept' multinational efforts to guarantee Ukraine's security. Mr Zelensky, meanwhile, said he was 'ready' for bilateral and trilateral meetings. But he told reporters following the White House meeting that if Russia does 'not demonstrate a will to meet, then we will ask the United States to act accordingly'. Nato secretary general Mark Rutte said the US and Europe would 'do more' on tariffs and sanctions against Russia if the country 'is not playing ball' on direct talks with Ukraine, in comments to Fox News. Sir Keir described the talks as 'good and constructive' and said there was a 'real sense of unity' between the European leaders, Mr Trump and Mr Zelensky. He said Mr Trump's plans to arrange the bilateral and trilateral meetings showed a recognition that Ukraine must be involved in talks. 'That is a recognition of the principle that on some of these issues, whether it's territory or the exchange of prisoners, or the very serious issue of the return of children, that is something where Ukraine must be at the table,' the Prime Minister said.
