Jaishankar meets China's foreign minister Wang Yi, looks to strengthen ties

Business Standard10 hours ago
Meeting his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said that the bilateral relationship between India and China is on a positive track.
Jaishakar is on a visit to Beijing to attend the SCO summit from July 14 to 15. He said that he looks forward to maintaining strong ties in the longer term. This is Jaishankar's first visit to China after the relationship between the two countries soured in 2020 due to a military standoff in Galwan valley.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs, Jaishankar said, "Since our leaders' meeting in Kazan in October 2024, the India-China relationship has been moving in a positive direction." "Our bilateral relationship requires that we take a far-seeing approach to our ties," he added.
Strengthening ties
Referring to the de-escalation of tensions that began in 2020, Jaishankar said, "We have made good progress in the past nine months for the normalisation of our relations...our responsibility is to maintain that momentum."
The EAM also appreciated the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra after five years. He thanked the Chinese side for their cooperation.
India-China ties to benefit the world
Jaishankar said that a stable relationship between India and China will not only benefit the two nations but the entire world. "We have earlier agreed that differences should not become disputes, nor should competition ever become conflict," said Jaishankar.
"As neighbouring nations and major economies in the world today, there are various facets and dimensions of our ties. It is essential that restrictive trade measures and roadblocks are avoided," he added.
Crackdown on terrorism
Jaishankar said that he will be meeting in the format of the SCO tomorrow, whose primary mandate is to combat terrorism, separatism, and extremism. "Terrorism is a shared concern and India hopes that zero tolerance will be strongly upheld," said Jaishankar.

INDIA front should hold meeting before Bihar elections: Uddhav

Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray on Monday said that the INDIA Alliance should hold a meeting ahead of elections to the Bihar Assembly and Maharashtra local bodies. 'The INDIA front has not held its meeting since the Lok Sabha election. I wish the meeting takes place as Bihar elections are approaching. Even Maharashtra is set to face local body elections. It is important that the INDIA front holds the meeting,' said Thackeray. The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) was formed before the 2024 general elections by all major Opposition parties in the country. The alliance was formed to contest the general elections together against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The INDIA front in Maharashtra comprises of Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (SP) — which formed the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). With local body polls approaching, the MVA is yet to finalise on whether to contest the elections in alliance or independently. Reacting to the ongoing case of over the party symbol and name in the Supreme Court, Thackeray said that it is good if the case gets over in August. 'Our symbol was robbed. I have always maintained that Election Commission has a right to allot symbol but not to give the party name. It cannot change the name, that's not its right. Even the case is ongoing about its rights over changing poll symbol,' said Thackeray. Congress to burn copies of Special Public Security Bill The Opposition Congress on Monday announced that it will burn the copies of recently passed Maharashtra Special Public Security bill in all districts of the state. Party's state unit chief Harshwardhan Sapkal said, 'This law is draconian inside and out and is meant to suppress the common people. That is why the Congress opposed it from the very beginning. Despite the ruling party having passed the bill using their majority in the assembly, the Congress's opposition remains strong, and symbolic burning of this black law will be carried out in every district.'

Dharmavaram silk sari of A.P. bags ODOP National Award

The famed Dharmavaram silk sari of Sri Sathya Sai district has bagged the 'One District One Product (ODOP) – 2024 National Award' in recognition of the State's achievements in the traditional handloom sector. The award instituted by the Centre's initiative to promote indigenous artisans and their products was conferred in New Delhi on Monday. State Minister for Handlooms and Textiles S. Savitha and Sri Sathya Sai District Collector T.S. Chetan received the award from Union Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Piyush Goyal at an event held at Bharat Mandapam. Minister Savitha felt that the award highlighted the artistic excellence of the handloom sector in Andhra Pradesh and further enhanced the global visibility of Indian culture. 'It is a moment of pride for Andhra Pradesh and will further strengthen the cottage industries and livelihoods of the artisans,' she said. Mr. Chetan termed the recognition as 'a milestone for weavers of Sathya Sai district'. The gesture would greatly help the artisans of Dharmavaram and create greater market and employment avenues, he said.
