Woman left gobsmacked by McDonald's in one of 'world's poshest countries'

Daily Mirror27-05-2025

A woman and property expert recently shared her experience after visiting a McDonald's eatery in Monaco - and was surprised by how different it is compared to the UK
A woman from Yorkshire has given us a glimpse into what it is like to visit McDonald's in one of the world's poshest countries - and how the menu differs. When we jet off abroad, most of us are keen to sample the local grub and steer clear of eateries we can easily find back home, but it is always intriguing to see how our favourite big brands adapt their menus to cater to local tastes and traditions. Monaco is synonymous with luxury - think swanky restaurants, the Grand Prix, yachts and being the priciest city globally for property. Despite the lack of fast food giants in the country, there are two McDonald's outlets - one in Monte-Carlo and the other in Monaco-Ville.
Property guru and entrepreneur, Abi Hookway, enjoys giving her Instagram followers a peek into how the other half live and sharing money-saving tips on her page @abi_hookway, where she has an impressive following of 475,000. Recently, she took us inside the McDonald's in Monaco-Ville.

As she walked in, she remarked: "This looks like we could be in the UK," but she quickly spotted some notable differences on the menu.

Abi was taken aback as she explored the fast food joint and noticed a bakery cabinet at the front of the counter, brimming with mouth-watering baked treats like donuts, cheesecake, muffins, cookies and macarons.
"My McDonald's in Yorkshire doesn't have this does it, wow," Abi exclaimed. She was chuffed with the meal deal offering three burgers, chips and a drink for just six euros, but felt the rest of the menu didn't live up to her high expectations.
"I was expecting like millionaire, gold...it's letting me down a bit," she reflected. Nonetheless, she was over the moon with being able to order macarons in a branded box, an iced coffee with a dollop of cream which arrived in a recyclable plastic cup and cherished being able to sit outdoors courtesy of the substantial seating area.
Upon sampling the potato wedges, Abi declared: "We need to have these in the UK."
Intrigued by Abi's video, one viewer pointed out: "Also the same food in Portugal with the dessert cabinets."

Echoing the sentiment, someone else posted: "They have these desert cabinets all over Germany McCafé."
Another person commented, expressing their affinity for the crockery: "I love the cups and bowls. Would be great to reuse at home. I wish the UK had the same."
There exists a smattering of unique McDonald's locations around the globe, with the "most beautiful" one sitting pretty in Rome, Italy.
Just minutes away from the iconic Spanish Steps, this particular McDonald's greets visitors with what appears to be a sculpture of Venus herself.
The world's largest McDonald's eatery is in Orlando, Florida. There is also what's deemed the"poshest" outlet in Long Island.
Furthermore, New Zealand's got a McDonald's that serves up its food from a retired airliner, while, in Germany, you can even grab a McDonald's meal from a floating restaurant.

"We are urgently looking into this with our ground handling partners." Imogen revealed her mother's motor neurone disease in January last year, six months after the initial diagnosis. Imogen went on to explain that she and Janet have decided to speak out publicly for several reasons. The star, who has two daughters of her own, said they are keen to raise awareness of MND and also hope Janet will be able to connect with others "who understand what she is going through". They added they were inspired to go public with the diagnosis after Coronation Street aired a storyline where character Paul Foreman had the disease. Motor Neurone Disease, which currently has no cure, is a rare disease that affects the brain and nerves, and causes weakness that gets worse over time. It slowly robs patients of the ability to walk, talk and eat, although every sufferer is different. 5 Janet and Imogen spoke out about the diagnosis last year Credit: imogenthomas/Instagram 5 Janet has been living with motor neurone disease since 2023 Credit: imogenthomas/Instagram

However, Wirtz has directly addressed that claim on social media. Taking to his Instagram story, he wrote: "Who says I want the 10 [emoji]. Florian Wirtz drops huge Liverpool hint in angry response to transfer claims

Florian Wirtz has taken to social media to deny reports that he has requested the No.10 shirt at Liverpool ahead of a potential club-record move to the Premier League champions Florian Wirtz has slammed speculation that he's eyeing the legendary No. 10 shirt at Liverpool - but the Bayer Leverkusen star has dropped a huge hint on his potential club-record move to Anfield. The Reds are making a splash this summer, engaging in discussions to bring the playmaker to Anfield - with his German employers reportedly holding out for €150million (£127m). Two bids have already been rejected and, while transfer talks progress, Wirtz appears eager to join the English giants. ‌ Sparking controversy, it was suggested earlier in the week that Wirtz desired the iconic No.10 shirt, currently donned by Alexis Mac Allister at Liverpool. With two seasons wearing the number at Bayer Leverkusen under his belt, the rumour mill implied he'd fancy a similar setup at Anfield. ‌ Yet, the 22-year-old has emphatically shut down such suggestions with a heated denial. Posting on Instagram, Wirtz shared a written message saying: "Who says I want the 10? I respect players. Don't believe everything what's written," accompanying his words with a clown emoji as if mocking the claims. His admission, however, does suggest that talks are still ongoing - and the player himself is aware of the speculation surrounding his future. Wirtz's potential claim on the shirt could have ruffled feathers, namely Mac Allister's, who was thrilled to snag the No.10 when he joined Liverpool a couple of years back. In past comments, Mac Allister acknowledged the weight of the number, saying: "I know how important the No 10 is in football. I had the possibility to take the No 8 as well, which is a big number for this club because of [Steven] Gerrard, of course." He then added, explaining his choice of shirt: "But I decided for No 10 because I used it a lot of times, in Argentina, in Brighton under-23s. It's a number I really like and that's why I chose it." The shirt number that Wirtz will don at Liverpool remains uncertain, should his anticipated move to Merseyside materialise. Negotiations are still ongoing at the club level, with Bayer Leverkusen reportedly holding out for a fee in the region of £127million. According to Sky Sports, Liverpool have already tabled an offer of around £105m. The report further suggests that Wirtz is keen on joining the Reds, despite attracting interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich. ‌ Earlier reports suggested that Wirtz was leaning towards Liverpool due to the prospect of more game time. Bild reported that he didn't receive any assurances from Bayern Munich regarding his role, which remained 'not finally resolved'. Bayern were allegedly planning to prioritise Jamal Musiala, who recently extended his contract, over Wirtz. This left Wirtz with a choice between Liverpool and Manchester City. During preliminary discussions, both clubs reportedly promised Wirtz 'a central role in attack', before he ultimately decided on Liverpool. With negotiations believed to be advancing behind closed doors, a resolution could be imminent.
