Woman left gobsmacked by McDonald's in one of 'world's poshest countries'

Daily Mirror27-05-2025
A woman and property expert recently shared her experience after visiting a McDonald's eatery in Monaco - and was surprised by how different it is compared to the UK
A woman from Yorkshire has given us a glimpse into what it is like to visit McDonald's in one of the world's poshest countries - and how the menu differs. When we jet off abroad, most of us are keen to sample the local grub and steer clear of eateries we can easily find back home, but it is always intriguing to see how our favourite big brands adapt their menus to cater to local tastes and traditions. Monaco is synonymous with luxury - think swanky restaurants, the Grand Prix, yachts and being the priciest city globally for property. Despite the lack of fast food giants in the country, there are two McDonald's outlets - one in Monte-Carlo and the other in Monaco-Ville.
Property guru and entrepreneur, Abi Hookway, enjoys giving her Instagram followers a peek into how the other half live and sharing money-saving tips on her page @abi_hookway, where she has an impressive following of 475,000. Recently, she took us inside the McDonald's in Monaco-Ville.

As she walked in, she remarked: "This looks like we could be in the UK," but she quickly spotted some notable differences on the menu.

Abi was taken aback as she explored the fast food joint and noticed a bakery cabinet at the front of the counter, brimming with mouth-watering baked treats like donuts, cheesecake, muffins, cookies and macarons.
"My McDonald's in Yorkshire doesn't have this does it, wow," Abi exclaimed. She was chuffed with the meal deal offering three burgers, chips and a drink for just six euros, but felt the rest of the menu didn't live up to her high expectations.
"I was expecting like millionaire, gold...it's letting me down a bit," she reflected. Nonetheless, she was over the moon with being able to order macarons in a branded box, an iced coffee with a dollop of cream which arrived in a recyclable plastic cup and cherished being able to sit outdoors courtesy of the substantial seating area.
Upon sampling the potato wedges, Abi declared: "We need to have these in the UK."
Intrigued by Abi's video, one viewer pointed out: "Also the same food in Portugal with the dessert cabinets."

Echoing the sentiment, someone else posted: "They have these desert cabinets all over Germany McCafé."
Another person commented, expressing their affinity for the crockery: "I love the cups and bowls. Would be great to reuse at home. I wish the UK had the same."
There exists a smattering of unique McDonald's locations around the globe, with the "most beautiful" one sitting pretty in Rome, Italy.
Just minutes away from the iconic Spanish Steps, this particular McDonald's greets visitors with what appears to be a sculpture of Venus herself.
The world's largest McDonald's eatery is in Orlando, Florida. There is also what's deemed the"poshest" outlet in Long Island.
Furthermore, New Zealand's got a McDonald's that serves up its food from a retired airliner, while, in Germany, you can even grab a McDonald's meal from a floating restaurant.

Mark Wright shares big 'disappointment' after holiday with baby Palma and Michelle Keegan

Mark Wright recently went to Majorca with his wife, Michelle Keegan and their five-month-old daughter, Palma, however the former TOWIE star admitted not everything went to plan Mark Wright has admitted he was a bit miffed after his recent holiday with his baby daughter, Palma. The former TOWIE star, 38, went to Majorca with the five-month-old and wife, Michelle Keegan, also 38. ‌ The family have a lot of love for the Spanish island and get away whenever they can. However, Mark revealed he was a bit disappointed after their latest trip while speaking to Heart FM co-host, Olly Murs. ‌ Admitting that he thought the airport staff in Spain would have been delighted by Palma's name, which is the capital of Majorca, Mark mused: "I thought: 'Surely there would be little smile or something'." It comes after Mark warned Olly 'you've got to stop ' after his huge transformation. ‌ Telling Olly about his experience, Mark said: "Well, obviously Palma is spelled like Palma. Like Palma, the place in Majorca, the city where you land. "And I was always like, whenever you land in another country and you go through passport control, they're never happy." ‌ Mark continued: "They never look at them smiley, it's just 'gracias', and just walk off. And I was like, surely they're going to read Palma's passport and be like, a little smile or something. 'Michelle's like, well, make sure you give that, like, her Palma's passport first and like, hold it in front of them. I do, I gave it. He just looked down at his stamps and went on, 'you go.'" Explaining that Palma went to Palma for the first time, he went on: "Palma went to Palma for the first ever time we did a picture in front of the Palma signs. So it was, it was a beautiful week. I ate and drank a little bit too. ‌ "You know, I also realised as well. When I used to go on holiday on my dad and he used to have a beer at like, 12 o'clock in the afternoon, I used to think, how could you want that? Like, maybe at night time when you go to the bar. What was I doing… "Everyday midday beer. I was like, I'm literally turning into my dad." ‌ Speaking about Palma, he concluded: "She's like her mum. She sleeps a lot! So we get away with, you know, tantrums on the plane, because we just give her a nap time, then she sleeps the whole flight." Former Coronation Street star Michelle became a first time mum in March this year - but she was already back flogging her swimwear brand and showing off her latest designs just weeks after giving birth. Taking to Instagram in July, she posed in a brown bikini and straw cowboy hat has fans marvelled how she had got back into shape so soon after welcoming her first child into the world.

Nestled on the coastline of Corfu, this villa can accommodate up to 10 guests and is ideal for a summer holiday in Europe. ‌ Posting to her Instagram Story yesterday, Amanda revealed just how much she and her daughter, Hollie, also nicknamed 'HRH', loved the show it featured in. "If you know you know," she wrote on Sunday. ‌ "The Durrells... @ionianestates." The TV star also added: "Me and #HRH were big fans of The Durrells. TV show." Airing from 2016 to 2019, The Durrells was a popular ITV comedy-drama about a British family adjusting to life on the Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s. ‌ It's loosely based on a true story, following Gerald Durrells' Corfu Trilogy, with the ITV series primarily filmed in the village of Danilia. It starred an array of famous faces, including Keeley Hawes as Louisa Durrell. Earlier this month, luxury holiday estate agent Ionian Estates also revealed several picturesque photographs of the property in an Instagram carousel. It is currently unclear how much it costs to spend a night at The Durrell property, but Ionian Estates has been approached for further information. Amanda's post also comes just months after she revealed that her family were selling a £895,000 property on Rightmove. The 'true rural gem' - which is still up for grabs - is situated in Hersham, a hamlet south of Kilkhampton in Cornwall. ‌ The TV star's parents confessed they are giving it up 'begrudgingly' to be nearer family and friends. Commenting on a Rightmove advert, they said it's just a five-minute drive from stunning sandy beaches and go-to spots like Bodmin Moor and Dartmoor. "We are sad to leave this lovely home we have lived in for over 22 years," Amanda's family said, according to the Mirror. "We will miss the early morning bird song and the gorgeous vistas and spectacular sunsets from different viewpoints throughout our gardens. "We have had many wonderful memories of barbecues in the garden with family and friends. Unfortunately age has caught up with us and begrudgingly we feel the time has come to downsize and be nearer to family. "We will miss our wonderful house and all our neighbours (95% of which are still here). It is so peaceful and quiet and very private and although in a country lane only five mins car ride away from amenities and the wonderful sandy beaches." The Cornwall property is currently listed at £895,000 on Rightmove. For more information, visit its website or contact Fine and Country Bude.
