Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta Breaks Silence On Thomas Partey Case: 'The Club Was...'

News184 days ago
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has emphasised that the club followed proper procedures in handling Thomas Partey's case.
Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta firmly asserted that the club followed the proper procedure in handling the case of former midfielder Thomas Partey, who was recently charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault by the Metropolitan Police Service, shortly after his contract with the club ended.
The alleged incidents occurred between 2021 and 2022. Partey is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on August 5. The investigation began in 2022. Partey faces two counts of rape concerning one woman, three counts involving a second woman, and one count of sexual assault relating to a third woman.
'The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised the Metropolitan Police Service to charge a man after a file of evidence was submitted by detectives. The Met has issued a charge and requisition to Thomas Partey, 32 (13/06/1992), of Hertfordshire, in connection with the following offences: Five counts of rape, one count of sexual assault," read the statement by the Metropolitan Police.
Arsenal are currently in Singapore for their pre-season tour and will face AC Milan on Wednesday. During a press conference, Arteta was asked about the Ghanaian midfielder.
'The club was very clear in its statement. There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated, so I cannot comment on any of that," said Arteta.
Partey signed for Atletico Madrid in 2012, making 188 appearances for the Spanish club, helping them win the Europa League in 2018 and La Liga in 2021. Arsenal signed him from Atletico Madrid on the transfer deadline day in October 2020 after meeting his £45 million release clause.
The midfielder went on to play 167 games for Arsenal, scoring nine goals and providing seven assists. He has 53 caps for the Ghana national team, scoring 15 goals for the African nation.

India has potential to make padel a top-level sport: Veronica Virseda ahead of third season of WPL

New Delhi: On the heels of its hugely successful first two editions, the World Padel League (WPL) is back for its third season with eleven thrilling matches featuring top international talent across six formidable teams. With two matches scheduled each day, fans can look forward to an electrifying experience, whether they're in the stadium or tuning in from home. Among the global stars headlining the league is World No. 10 Spain's Veronica Virseda, who represents Team Khan Tigers. The Spanish star is visibly impressed by how rapidly India is embracing the sport. 'India has what it takes to make padel a top-level global sport,' says Veronica Virseda, as she returns for the third season of the WPL. 'I was really surprised by the enthusiasm during the first week. The fans, the energy, the professionalism - everything felt world-class. Without a doubt, I believe India is one of the countries that can make padel a top-tier global sport,' she said. Her observation comes at a time when India is beginning to show serious momentum in padel. In just few years, the number of courts has grown to over 100 across major metros, alongside growing participation in local clubs and corporate parks. WPL's move to India has helped accelerate this surge by introducing fans to top-ranked players and an electrifying format. For many in India, padel is still a new sport. Blending the energy of tennis and the strategy of squash, it's played exclusively in doubles on a glass-walled court roughly one-third the size of a tennis court. The use of walls makes rallies longer and more creative, while teamwork and agility are crucial. With eleven matches, six international teams, and daily doubleheaders, WPL Season 3 is set to propel padel's popularity in India to new heights. For Veronica Virseda, the focus is clear. 'Reaching the final - that's the goal,' she says. 'But more than anything, I'm excited to see how India continues to embrace and grow this sport.'

Social media users troll AIFF after rejecting Xavi Hernandez for India's head coach role: ‘Crowdfunding hi karwa lete'

Social media platforms erupted in disbelief and mockery after reports claimed that the All India Football Federation (AIFF) had turned down former World Cup winner Xavi Hernandez's application for the Indian national team's head coach role—citing lack of funds. From sarcastic fundraising suggestions to what-if scenarios envisioning India's football future under Xavi, the online backlash was swift and scathing. According to reports AIFF rejected Xavi's application due to lack of funds (REUTERS) The buzz began after a Times of India report revealed that Xavi had expressed interest in the position and was among several high-profile names who had formally applied. The list also reportedly included former India head coach Stephen Constantine, ex-Liverpool star Harry Kewell, and India's own Khalid Jamil. What caught the AIFF off guard was the unexpected arrival of Xavi's application—reportedly emailed personally by him. However, the form was incomplete, missing key details such as a contact number. Confirming the authenticity of the application, AIFF national team director Subrata Paul said, 'It's correct that Xavi's name was there. The application was emailed to the AIFF.' Despite the excitement such a name might usually generate, the federation allegedly did not pursue the opportunity further. 'Even if Xavi was genuinely interested in Indian football and could be convinced to take up the job, we would need a lot of money,' A member of AIFF's technical committee was quoted as saying. Xavi has previously spoken about his interest in Indian football, crediting the growing presence of Spanish coaches in the country. Though his coaching résumé already boasts titles like the 2022–23 La Liga crown and the 2023 Supercopa de España with Spanish football club Barcelona, AIFF reportedly felt that hiring him was financially unrealistic. The online reaction has been relentless. Fans questioned how the AIFF could turn away a name like Xavi, even joking that a crowdfunding campaign could've been launched to afford him. Some pointed to the missed opportunity for Indian football to take a global leap, while others used memes and satire to vent their frustration at what they saw as a typically short-sighted decision.
