Kerala BJP Chief hails PM Modi for advancing railway development in state under Amrit Bharat scheme
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], May 22 (ANI): Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Thursday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for accelerating Kerala's railway development under the Amrit Bharat Scheme and said that the PM has been very supportive of the state.
Speaking with ANI, Chandrasekhar said, 'PM Modi has been very kind and supportive of Kerala even though there's only one MP that Kerala has sent to the Lok Sabha. Highways, ports, Railway Stations. If there is any development happening in Kerala it is simply because of Narendra Modi ji. There is no other development happening because of the state government and we are deeply grateful that he has taken these two stations and modernised it under the Amri Bharat Station Scheme,'
Earlier in the day, Chandrasekhar, in his post on X, highlighted that the Modi government is transforming Kerala's rail network, from the launch of Vande Bharat trains to the construction of overbridges.
'Grateful to PM Narendra Modi ji for fast-tracking Kerala's railway development. Through the Amrit Bharat Scheme, 35 railway stations across the state are being upgraded with world-class amenities at a cost of Rs 2,560 crore. Additionally, the Centre allocated Rs 3,042 crore for Kerala's railway projects in the latest Union Budget,' he said.
'From the launch of Vande Bharat trains to construction of overbridges and doubling of tracks, the Modi Government is driving a holistic transformation of Kerala's rail network, bringing the vision of a #VikasitaKeralam closer to reality,' Chandrasekhar said.
Prime Minister Modi inaugurated 103 redeveloped Amrit stations across 86 districts in 18 states and Union Territories today. These projects have been developed at a cost of over Rs 1,100 crore.
A statement from the PMO said the redeveloped Amrit stations across India integrate modern infrastructure with cultural heritage, passenger-centric amenities, including those for Divyangjan, and sustainable practices to enhance the travel experience.
The redevelopment of these stations aims to enhance the travel experience for passengers while advancing the broader vision of transforming Indian Railways into a world-class transportation service.

The previous all-time high for silver was Rs 1,03,500 per kg, recorded on March 19. Gold also saw firm upward movement. The price of gold of 99.9% purity rose Rs 430 to Rs 99,690 per 10 grams, while gold of 99.5% purity gained Rs 400 to Rs 99,100 per 10 grams, both inclusive of all taxes. Silver futures for July delivery rallied by Rs 3,833, or 3.78%, to touch a lifetime high of Rs 1,05,213 per kg on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX). Looking ahead, Rahul Kalantri, Vice President (Commodities) at Mehta Equities, said the metal could climb further. 'The metal might reach around Rs 1,14,000 to Rs 1,20,000 per kg by this Diwali, but investors should brace for a bumpy ride ahead as market volatility remains high amid global uncertainties,' he said. Gold futures for the August contract also gained Rs 635 to reach Rs 99,214 per 10 grams. 'Gold prices traded higher, supported by a weaker dollar and renewed safe-haven demand amid lingering tariff uncertainty and US debt concerns,' said Jateen Trivedi, VP Research Analyst, Commodity and Currency at LKP Securities. Spot gold in international markets rose by $21.58, or 0.64%, to $3,393.93 per ounce. Spot silver jumped nearly 4% to $35.80 per ounce. 'Spot silver has surpassed the previous resistance level of $35 per ounce and is trading above that mark, reaching a 12-year high,' added Gandhi. Chintan Mehta, CEO of Abans Financial Services, said investor focus is now on the upcoming US non-farm payroll report, which may offer cues on the Federal Reserve's next move. 'Any new geopolitical developments could add another layer of uncertainty, once again driving investors toward the safe haven of gold,' he added.

Samruddhi Mahamarg opens fully, cuts down travel time from Mumbai to Nagpur by 9 hours
The Hindu Hridaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg is now open end to end after the 76-kilometre leg between Igatpuri and Amane (Thane) was inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, providing a seamless 701-kilometre connectivity from Mumbai to Nagpur. The six-lane expressway that is now fully operational will reduce the travel time between the two cities by half from 17 hours to around eight hours. The event organised at Igatpuri was also attended by Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar and other ministers of the Mahayuti government. The completion of the last leg brings the entire project to realisation after decades of intricate engineering issues, political will and huge investments. The project was initially estimated at Rs 55,500 crore, but as it crossed various technical and logistical barriers and the project cost rose to over Rs 61,000 crore. At the inauguration, Fadnavis, who initially conceptualised the project in his first tenure as a CM, said, 'This is not merely a road, it is a corridor of Maharashtra's economy. It directly connects 24 districts with JNPT and paves the way for growth, transportation, logistics and opportunities in agriculture, tourism and industrial development.' The final stretch of the corridor passing through Nashik and Thane districts had some of the most challenging construction tasks. The 76-kilometre section comprises five twin tunnels of 10.73 kilometres in length, including the broadest tunnel in the country near Igatpuri that is 8 km long and 17.61 metres wide. It also has India's first fire-fighting system in a tunnel. As many as 17 viaducts with an aggregate length of more than 10.56 kilometers had to be built in hilly and forested territory. 'Because of a thick forest block, absence of access roads, hilly terrain and high rainfall in Igatpuri, we had to work with utmost caution. Nevertheless, we adopted the best safety measures to facilitate a safe working environment,' said K Mallikharjuna Rao, Business Unit Head, Hydro and Underground, Afcons Infrastructure Ltd, who were a part of construction of the twin tunnels. This section also has interchanges at Igatpuri, Khutghar and Amane. More than 60 low and high voltage power lines had to be shifted for the construction along with the new rail overbridge. The road now provides a safer route to the scary Kasara Ghat and shortens the journey time from Igatpuri to Kasara to eight minutes. The Samruddhi Mahamarg is a greenfield expressway designed by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) that passes through 392 villages in 26 talukas in 10 districts. It directly links Nagpur, Wardha, Amravati, Washim, Buldhana, Jalna, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Ahilyanagar, Nashik and Thane and indirectly serves many others such as Chandrapur, Nanded, Dhule, Palghar and Raigad. The highest speed limit is fixed at 120 kmph on flat terrain and 100 kmph in ghat sections. Shinde said, 'We initiated the project in our term and completed it in our term only. This access control road will prove to be a game changer in economic activity between Mumbai and Vidarbha. Earlier, the farmer who used to travel for three days to come to Mumbai with farm produce now is able to reach the same day.' Besides its huge size, the expressway has been built focusing on conservation and intelligent engineering, according to MSRDC officials. For the conservation of wildlife, 92 overpasses and eight underpasses have been constructed for the safe passage of animals. Over 3.3 million trees have been transplanted with native species and 1,000 farm ponds have been created along the road to support agriculture in the regions. Fadnavis also highlighted advanced features such as temperature sensitive fire fighting systems, rainwater harvesting systems and well designed interchanges. 'The fire fighting system and temperature sensitive surfaces are designed such that they get activated when temperatures rise above 60 degrees Celsius and self-deactivates when the temperature goes below 30 degrees Celsius,' he said. The expressway will also facilitate the transportation of goods between MIHAN in Nagpur and JNPT in Mumbai with faster and more reliable cargo movement. In future, there are proposals for 200 MW of solar power generation along the route, with 22 facility centres being planned to benefit travellers. A gas pipeline from Konkan to Nagpur through this corridor is also planned that will ensure constant fuel supply to industries along this route. After Samruddhi Mahamarg, the government is now set to apply the model of access controlled expressways to other proposed corridors such as the Mumbai-Pune expressway missing link and Shaktipeeth Mahamarg, thereby increasing the network of expressways across the state. 'We are constructing an access control grid so that one is able to reach any corner of the state to other within 8 to 10 hours only,' Shinde added. In his address, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said, 'When the project started, everyone opposed it, some even organised protests… The estimated amount was Rs 55,500 crore, but owing to factors, it has crossed Rs 61,000 crore now. But the magnitude of this achievement for the state is huge.'

But every day, near the entrance, there's a man quietly offering help. He doesn't drive anyone anywhere, but he's found a simple way to earn a steady income– without even starting his auto. The service that starts with 'bag de do' What looks like just another autorickshaw parked near the consulate is actually part of a clever little service. The driver, who likes to keep things low-key, offers to hold on to people's bags while they go in for their visa appointments. 'Sir, bag de do. Safe rakhunga, mera roz ka kaam hai. Rs 1,000 charge hai,' he tells confused applicants, many of whom have no other choice at that moment. This isn't just a one-time favour– it's a full-time business. Every day, the driver stores bags for around 20 to 30 people. At Rs 1,000 per person, that adds up to a daily income of Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000. From auto stand to storage hub The process is simple. The autorickshaw is just the starting point. Once someone agrees to hand over their bag, it's not kept in the vehicle– instead, it's taken to a secure location. This spot is reportedly managed with help from a local police officer who provides access to a nearby storage space. There's no online booking, no receipts, and no formal customer service. Still, the service runs smoothly, thanks to routine, reliability, and word-of-mouth. An informal setup, built on trust What makes this setup work is its simplicity– and the trust it has earned over time. Many regular visitors now rely on it without hesitation. Rahul Rupani, one such visitor, shared his experience on LinkedIn. Caught off guard by the no-bag policy, he was unsure of what to do until the auto driver stepped in to offer help. Rupani noted in his post, 'He has created a model built entirely on trust. With no app, no office, and no MBA degree, he earns with just his street smartness and a deep understanding of people.' Online buzz and divided opinions The story has stirred a lot of discussion on social media. While some people praised the autorickshaw driver for finding a smart and practical solution to a common problem, others questioned how safe or legal such unregulated services are, especially around high-security areas like embassies. One LinkedIn user commented, 'Your post has busted his business, income, identity, reg. no…. besides celebrating a jugaad, IT evasion, and exposes an unholy nexus.'
