Ex-footballer claims he would be DEAD if it wasn't for his profession after post-match drugs test saved his life
The former player who won six major honours during his career has opened up about the harrowing admission upon reflecting on his life in a recent interview.
He learned of his cancer after a routine drugs test following a match.
The player in question? Former Bolton, Celtic and Everton defender Alan Stubbs.
Stubbs, 53, who has battled testicular cancer twice - aged 28 and 29 - has detailed how learned of his life-changing situation.
The centre back's initial diagnosis came off the back of one of his happiest days in his career after helping Celtic beat Dundee United 3-0 to win the 1999 Scottish League Cup final.
The win at Ibrox saw Stubbs collect his first piece of his silverware in his career, but his life was soon to remarkable turn following his post-match drugs test.
Speaking on Undr the Cosh podcast, Stubbs - who played 139 times for the Scottish giants - said of that drugs test: I produced a hormone that is usally found in pregnant women. When it's found in men it's usually linked to cancer.
'I dodged two bullets (cancer). If I wasn't a footballer I'd be dead. As footballers we always get the best advice or treatment and are always getting tested.
'That is why I always say I was so lucky because if I wasn't a footballer I wouldn't have been chosen for a random drug test. Even after that I still wouldn't be pushed to the front of queues to see specialists.
'I got diagnosed on Friday and got treatment on Monday when people nowadays have to wait six months.
'For people to turn around and say "how unlucky was I" couldn't be any further from the truth. As I say if I was not a footballer, I would probably be dead - it's as simple as that.'
After the 1999 Scottish League Cup final, he underwent surgery and chemotherapy and made a full recovery, only to suffer a relapse in November 2000 which required further treatment.
Following a second operation in January 2001, the former Bolton defender was given the all-clear and returned to the Celtic first-team with a goal in a 5-2 win at Hibernian in May 2001.
Stubbs' six honours all came with Celtic where he won two league titles, one Scottish Cup and three Scottish League Cups.

He (Rodgers) needs backing. "A 4,000 mile trek to Kazakhstan and then they've got to come back and play Rangers. I don't think Rangers should be under pressure because I don't think the board have backed him. But they have to beat this side in Kazakhstan." And Brazil wasn't pulling his punches either. Kairat defended so well, too. 'You listen the chants about 'sack the board, we need reinforcements.' Yes, but Brendan has clearly said this group, playing these two games, are good enough. They will have another competitive game in their legs so maybe they will be fitter (for the second leg)." And Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton had his say on social media too. World media reacts as 'predictable' Celtic slaughtered and Parkhead boos music to gloating Kairat ears
It was a night to forget at Parkhead as Celtic stumbled to a dismal draw with Kairat Almaty 'Brendan Rodgers simply didn't know what to do.' That was the verdict from one astonished Kazakh outlet who slaughtered Celtic and held Kairat Almaty up as heroes. Some bookies had the Hoops as short as 1/7 to win in last night's Champions League playoff round first leg but they couldn't have been more wrong after they stumbled to a dismal 0-0 draw. There was no clinging on about it for Kairat who matched them all the way and left Rodgers and his team needing to perform a Scottish football first next week to progress to the Champions League proper – win in Kazakhstan. They were booed off on the night and, on this performance in isolation at least, deserved it. They were woeful, created nothing, and Daizen Maeda 's fluffed chance at the death just about summed up a rare toothless night for a Celtic team who have made it needlessly hard on themselves to qualify for the last 16. If you reckon that's a little harsh, just wait til you hear what the world media had to say... Orda (Kazakhstan) The Celtic lineup was easy to guess the day before, but on the field this lineup looked, surprisingly, heavy and lacking in initiative. The Hoops also got two of their corners in a row in the 9th minute, though they were fruitless, and the hero of the match's debut was almost... Alexander Martynovich. At the start of the second half it became clear that the conversation in the Glaswegian dressing room was serious. A little later, Kairat got lucky when Yegor Sorokin flew into Benjamin Nygren in the penalty area – it looked like a penalty. Paradoxically, the planned onslaught of Celtic was broken by injuries and the pauses associated with them. The most serious was that of Zarutsky, who had to be replaced by reserve goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov.
