Ex-footballer claims he would be DEAD if it wasn't for his profession after post-match drugs test saved his life

Daily Mail24-04-2025
A former footballer believes he would not be alive now if he had chosen a different career path in his life.
The former player who won six major honours during his career has opened up about the harrowing admission upon reflecting on his life in a recent interview.
He learned of his cancer after a routine drugs test following a match.
The player in question? Former Bolton, Celtic and Everton defender Alan Stubbs.
Stubbs, 53, who has battled testicular cancer twice - aged 28 and 29 - has detailed how learned of his life-changing situation.
The centre back's initial diagnosis came off the back of one of his happiest days in his career after helping Celtic beat Dundee United 3-0 to win the 1999 Scottish League Cup final.
The win at Ibrox saw Stubbs collect his first piece of his silverware in his career, but his life was soon to remarkable turn following his post-match drugs test.
Speaking on Undr the Cosh podcast, Stubbs - who played 139 times for the Scottish giants - said of that drugs test: I produced a hormone that is usally found in pregnant women. When it's found in men it's usually linked to cancer.
'I dodged two bullets (cancer). If I wasn't a footballer I'd be dead. As footballers we always get the best advice or treatment and are always getting tested.
'That is why I always say I was so lucky because if I wasn't a footballer I wouldn't have been chosen for a random drug test. Even after that I still wouldn't be pushed to the front of queues to see specialists.
'I got diagnosed on Friday and got treatment on Monday when people nowadays have to wait six months.
'For people to turn around and say "how unlucky was I" couldn't be any further from the truth. As I say if I was not a footballer, I would probably be dead - it's as simple as that.'
After the 1999 Scottish League Cup final, he underwent surgery and chemotherapy and made a full recovery, only to suffer a relapse in November 2000 which required further treatment.
Following a second operation in January 2001, the former Bolton defender was given the all-clear and returned to the Celtic first-team with a goal in a 5-2 win at Hibernian in May 2001.
Stubbs' six honours all came with Celtic where he won two league titles, one Scottish Cup and three Scottish League Cups.

Celtic annihilated by four hurting diehards as Alan Brazil 'driven mad' in astonishing live radio takedown

It wasn't great viewing for Celtic and four Parkhead-daft pundits had their say in the aftermath Alan Brazil says Celtic are driving him 'mad' as his beloved team faced a scathing takedown across radio, TV and social media after last night's stumble against Kairat Almaty. ‌ The Hoops have been widely rounded on for a toothless draw with the Kazakh minnows which leaves them facing a 7,000 mile round trip this time next week with their Champions League playoff tie finely in the balance. ‌ The world media took Celtic, who dominated the ball but did very little with it, apart. And those closer to home have had their say too. ‌ Scots Brazil and Shebahn Aherne, neither of whom have hid their Celtic allegiances, despaired on talkSPORT this morning. Aherne kicked it off by saying: "Shocking performance last night. We had it coming. Worst fears confirmed last night, failing to create chances, a terrible performance, 'sack the board chants around Parkhead, boos at full-time. "There's been frustration from Celtic fans going into this game about the lack of backing Brendan Rodgers has had going into this window, especially after the amount of money they brought in from making the league phase last season, and they players and goalscorers they've lost. "Kuhn, not replaced. Kyogo, not replaced. Jota, out for what we believe may be the duration of the season, not replaced. "I don't want to hammer Adam (Idah), but they don't have the squad. He (Rodgers) needs backing. "A 4,000 mile trek to Kazakhstan and then they've got to come back and play Rangers. I don't think Rangers should be under pressure because I don't think the board have backed him. But they have to beat this side in Kazakhstan." ‌ And Brazil wasn't pulling his punches either. He added: "It's just a shame because last year the Champions League was fantastic. So many great nights. Even the crowd (last night), for a European night was quiet. "Celtic's passing was really sloppy. I'm not saying there was a lack of urgency, but the team from Kazakhstan were buzzing. They were controlled and organised. ‌ "Another thing that drives me mad is when Celtic get free-kicks and corners, I'm like 'any chance of a goal?' Celtic's corners are pants, they're murder. "Celtic aren't out yet, but they've got to go now to Kazakhstan and then come back and play Rangers at Ibrox." The takedown wasn't limited to the radio either. Speaking on TNT Sports straight after the stalemate, former Celtic midfielder Johan Mjallby said: 'Celtic didn't create enough clear-cut chances for me to say they should have won the game, despite having more possession. Kairat defended so well, too. 'You listen the chants about 'sack the board, we need reinforcements.' Yes, but Brendan has clearly said this group, playing these two games, are good enough. They will have another competitive game in their legs so maybe they will be fitter (for the second leg)." And Record Sport columnist Chris Sutton had his say on social media too. He wrote on Twitter: "So many wrong things. Bad idea selling Kyogo and selling Kuhn before the most important game of the season. Replacing neither. Brendan starting with a striker he doesn't want to start. Tierney not lasting and Scales playing at left back. Fail to prepare, prepare to fail…"

World media reacts as 'predictable' Celtic slaughtered and Parkhead boos music to gloating Kairat ears

It was a night to forget at Parkhead as Celtic stumbled to a dismal draw with Kairat Almaty 'Brendan Rodgers simply didn't know what to do.' ‌ That was the verdict from one astonished Kazakh outlet who slaughtered Celtic and held Kairat Almaty up as heroes. ‌ Some bookies had the Hoops as short as 1/7 to win in last night's Champions League playoff round first leg but they couldn't have been more wrong after they stumbled to a dismal 0-0 draw. ‌ There was no clinging on about it for Kairat who matched them all the way and left Rodgers and his team needing to perform a Scottish football first next week to progress to the Champions League proper – win in Kazakhstan. They were booed off on the night and, on this performance in isolation at least, deserved it. They were woeful, created nothing, and Daizen Maeda 's fluffed chance at the death just about summed up a rare toothless night for a Celtic team who have made it needlessly hard on themselves to qualify for the last 16. If you reckon that's a little harsh, just wait til you hear what the world media had to say... Orda (Kazakhstan) The Celtic lineup was easy to guess the day before, but on the field this lineup looked, surprisingly, heavy and lacking in initiative. The Hoops also got two of their corners in a row in the 9th minute, though they were fruitless, and the hero of the match's debut was almost... Alexander Martynovich. At the start of the second half it became clear that the conversation in the Glaswegian dressing room was serious. A little later, Kairat got lucky when Yegor Sorokin flew into Benjamin Nygren in the penalty area – it looked like a penalty. ‌ Paradoxically, the planned onslaught of Celtic was broken by injuries and the pauses associated with them. The most serious was that of Zarutsky, who had to be replaced by reserve goalkeeper Temirlan Anarbekov. The fact that Rodgers simply doesn't know what to do became clear when Auston Trusty came on: the third central defender was obviously needed not for defence, but to try to score from set pieces. The plan didn't work. Although Celtic could have scored, Maeda didn't take advantage of the Almaty gift. ‌ The abundance of pauses in the second half resulted in 10 (!) minutes of added time, Kairat held on to a draw, but lost Satpayev. The 17-year-old striker, who had worked hard in Glasgow, prevented Celtic from playing a penalty kick in the last seconds (!), a yellow card and Dastan's emotions, realising what he had done in the heat of the moment - disqualification, and on Tuesday in Almaty, Kairat's "nine", alas, will not play. The loss is serious and offensive – everything was going too well for the champion of Kazakhstan in Scotland. Special admiration for Rafael Urazbakhtin: one of the best matches of our teams in European Cups and whistles from the stands of Celtic Park addressed to their own after the final whistle as proof – Kairat will be remembered in Glasgow. RTE (Ireland) The visitors were wasting time at every opportunity and 10 added minutes gave Celtic scope, but Maeda spurned a gift when he ran through alone and could only manage a tame shot which was easily saved by Anarbekov and there were boos at the end from irate supporters. ‌ Vesti (Kazakhstan) Kairat's match in the Champions League turned into a big sensation. It should be noted that at the end of the first half, both teams failed to shoot on target. At the same time, Kairat had five shots on target, and Celtic - two. The Scots were more active in the second half, launching several dangerous attacks. ‌ The Guardian (UK) In Brendan Rodgers' 800th match as a manager, there was no traditional early onslaught by the hosts as the accomplished Kazakhstani side more than matched their hosts. After Saturday's home league game against Livingston, Celtic will get ready for the return leg in Kazakhstan on Tuesday night – which involves a 7,000-mile round trip – knowing qualification requires perhaps more work than many anticipated. Celtic's corner count mounted but to no avail and the home fans – perhaps also frustrated by a lack of transfer activity – began singing 'sack the board' as the game moved into the final quarter. ‌ There were boos at the end from the irate Celtic supporters. (Kazakhztan) The first half was played on opposite courses, with the visitors creating more danger, and Alexander Martynovich scored, but the goal was cancelled due to offside. At the start of the second half, the favorite rushed into attack, James Forrest hit the post, pressing did not lead the Scots to success, then Alexander Zarutsky got injured and Temirlan Anarbekov entered the field, managing to keep the goal dry. ‌ beIN Sports (Worldwide) Rodgers' side were restricted for large portions of the 90-minute encounter at Celtic Park, as Kairat's defence stood strong. The Celts registered a whopping 15 corners, 29 total crosses, and 64 final third entries, but were unable to make their territorial supremacy count. Having spent 35.1% of the match camped in Kairat's half, Celtic posted and expected goals (xG) total of just 0.44, registering just two shots on target in 100 minutes of football. Kairat made a game-leading 17 interceptions and 17 tackles, with Erkin Tapalov and Ofri Arad leading the way with six and four, respectively. Kazinform (Kazakhstan) It should be noted that Celtic are aiming for their 14th Champions League group stage appearance in their history and their fourth in a row. For Kairat, this is a chance to write a new page in their own history, as the team has never played in the main draw of the Champions League before. The return match will take place on August 26 in Almaty.
