BETHESDA, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--This fall, Sodexo is introducing three crave-worthy, fast-casual dining concepts to satisfy Gen Z's appetite for authenticity and bold flavor. These new dining concepts are based on research obtained from retail insights and consumer data, partly informed by Sodexo's own proprietary Quad Squad, a focus group of hundreds of college students across the country sharing their opinions, ensuring concept viability and relevancy for today's students.
Recognizing that today's students are an experience-driven, 'foodie generation' who value moments over material things, Sodexo is responding by creating new dining concepts inspired by sunny Mediterranean coasts, the bustling streets of India, and the vintage diners evoking memories of Route 66. Sodexo plans to open 75 locations over the next year.
'Each concept maximizes food as an experience, all without sacrificing the convenience that busy students want or the seamless operations that campuses need,' said Sodexo Campus Chief Marketing Officer, Drew Nannis. There's a good chance "your money could be making a lot more money," says Kate Byrne, Vanguard's head of Cash Plus distribution. With short-term interest rates still relatively high, it's a great time to earn essentially risk-free, inflation-beating returns on your cash. But a majority of Americans are missing out on these easy gains, Byrne told Business Insider. According to a Vanguard survey of 1,011 respondents published in March, at least 57% of Americans are earning less than 3% a year on their cash savings. Eight percent said they have their savings in physical cash, meaning they're yielding nothing; 16% are earning less than 1%; and 33% are earning 1%-3%. This suggests that even if savers are aware enough to move their money to an account or product with a higher interest rate than the standard checking or savings account — the annual yield on which is under 0.5% — they're still not capitalizing on the highest-yielding products on the market. "If it's below 3% you should be looking," Byrne said. "You should be finding a vehicle that has a better rate than that, and also has the features you need, whether that's FDIC insurance or the ability to move money seamlessly." High-yield savings accounts, certificates of deposit, and money market rates can vary by institution, length of deposit, and the amount deposited. Money-market funds, which hold cash equivalents like ultra low-risk short-term Treasurys, are more liquid than other products CDs, for instance, often force investors to pay a penalty if they pull their money out before the maturity date. Here are examples of some money market accounts — which you can invest in through a brokerage account with a firm like Charles Schwab or Fidelity — yielding above 4% as of August 1, according to Bankrate: The Vanguard survey data showed that 60% Americans feel they don't fully understand the interest-rate landscape and how it affects their savings. "Not only are they sort of not even clear on what APY is and how it affects their savings, but, likely because they're not clear on it, they're earning less than they could be in a more high-yielding product," Byrne said, referencing the common acronym for annual percentage yield. Young savers are less likely to understand interest rates and more likely to be missing out on returns, the data also shows. Sixty-seven percent of Gen Z savers are earnings less than 3%. Among millennials, that number is 59%. Byrne said that savers often miss out on these returns because switching banks or moving money to different accounts isn't top of mind. "You would be shocked at the number of people who are still in the bank account they opened up when they were in college or even high school, because they needed somewhere to put that first paycheck," Byrne said. "And then inertia kicks in and you've got bills connected to it, and life just moves really fast and many things seem more important." It's unclear how long cash-equivalent investments will continue to deliver strong returns. Short-term interest rates, which track closely with the fed funds rate, are expected to come down in September and later this year. Markets are placing a 99% chance that the Federal Reserve will slash rates by 0.25% next month. Still, with the fed funds rate between 4.25% and 4.5%, returns should remain above the inflation rate, which was 2.7% year-over-year in July.

In June, Akron's median home sale price was $221,507, the second-lowest among the 100 metros analyzed. "When it comes to young homeowners specifically, affordability is easily the most influential factor," TurboTenant Vice President of Marketing Harrison Stevens told ConsumerAffairs. "Young homeowners today are not just faced with higher housing prices than ever before, but also more student loan debt, a higher cost of living in general, and salaries that hold far less weight." Midwest Momentum Realty One Group Next Generation Realtor Daniel Andrews told Fortune that median home prices in many Midwest cities range from $200,000 to $275,000, compared to a national median above $400,000. Andrews told Fortune she's seen a growing number of Gen Z buyers, particularly remote workers and young professionals, moving from high-cost states such as Florida to more affordable areas."For many, it's not just about cheaper homes, but about being able to build wealth earlier without drowning in overhead," she said. Gen Z and millennials made up nearly 30% of all interstate movers, according to StorageCafe 2023 data, with states such as Indiana and Wisconsin seeing some of the largest gains. Midwest ZIP Codes Are Heating Up latest Hottest ZIP Codes report shows suburban areas in the Midwest heating up. The ranking places Ballwin, Missouri; Strongsville, Ohio; and Bexley, Ohio among the nation's top 10. While these suburbs are pricier than nearby metros, they remain moderate on a national scale. Buyers in these ZIPs tend to come from large, high-earning metro areas seeking better value without sacrificing access to jobs and amenities, with suburbs offering more space and lifestyle flexibility, according to the report. The Bigger Picture Although home prices in the Midwest are climbing, the region remains the most affordable homebuying market in the country, according to Redfin. Detroit has the lowest median sales price among major metros at $180,000, while Cleveland's median is about $217,000—both roughly half the U.S. median. For decades, cash was king. It felt safe, simple, and sensible. But with where the world is at today, that safety comes with a hidden cost — because your cash is going backwards. Right now, Aussies are sitting on record levels of cash. Based on current data, household bank deposits, including; savings, transaction accounts, term deposits, and offset balances are sitting at a record high level of $1.46 trillion dollars. Because the interest you earn on a savings account is taxable at marginal tax rates of up to 47 per cent, and then on top the cost of everything is increasing each year with inflation, any money you have in cash is breaking even at best, and probably going backwards. If you're earning good money and stockpiling cash, the uncomfortable truth is that you're losing ground - and over time this adds up in a big way. Cash can't keep up Just to be clear, cash does have an important role to play. It's great for emergencies, short term goals, and giving you peace of mind. But anything beyond that, and it becomes a drag. There are three key reasons why. Firstly, inflation eats into your purchasing power. If inflation is running at the RBA's target of 3 per cent, $100,000 in the bank will effectively be worth only $97,000 in a year's time. Further, returns on cash are taxed. Even if you're earning 4.5 per cent interest, if you're paying 37 per cent tax, your after tax return is closer to 2.8 per cent - which is less than the inflation rate over the last few years. And finally but maybe most importantly, you miss out on compounding. Cash savings don't grow in a meaningful way over time, and definitely don't grow in the way investments do. The end result is that while having a good savings balance feels safe on the surface, this is silently costing you money every single month. There's a smarter alternative to hoarding cash The answer here isn't just to 'dump all of your money into the sharemarket' which could come with more risk than you need. Instead, what you need is a system - a smarter way to use your cash to build flexibility and momentum, without risking your financial progress. There are four key things you should be thinking about to make sure you're making the most of the money you have today. Keep the right amount of cash You most likely should be holding some of your money in cash — just not all of it. As a general rule of thumb, you should have a maximum of 3-6 months of your core spending in a high interest savings account for emergencies. This gives you peace of mind and will protect you from the unexpected. In addition, if you're planning a large expense, i.e. house deposit, school fees, or a holiday, cash is probably the right place for that money. But anything beyond this means you're overcapitalising in an underperforming asset, and probably costing yourself a bunch of money. Use offset accounts to kill bad debt faster If you've got a home loan, one of the best places for your savings is to put it to work against your debt. Instead of sitting cash in a savings account, parting it in an offset account will generally see you further ahead. An offset account reduces the amount of interest you're charged on your debt. So if your mortgage is $650,000, and you've got $50,000 in your offset, it means you're only paying interest on $600,000. That's a risk free and tax free return on your money at your current mortgage interest rate, which beats most savings accounts hands down. If you've got a loan and you're still saving into a regular savings account, think about using an offset account to get your money working harder for you. Automate investments into growth assets Once your buffer and debt strategy are sorted, it's time to get your cash growing. You can start by automating monthly investments into growth assets like ETFs or shares, or even directing the money towards an investment property. Doing this on a consistent schedule allows you to remove emotion and takes advantage of market cycles. This is where the long term compounding magic happens — and where your money starts actually building your wealth rather than just sitting still. BREAK IT DOWN: Investing just $1,000 monthly over a 20 year period would see your money grow to be worth around $739,964 based only on the long term Australian sharemarket return of 9.8 per cent. This compares to directing the same $1,000 monthly to a savings account at 4 per cent — where the money would grow to be worth only $366,775. That's a difference of $373,189 on exactly the same money and shows the power of getting quality growth assets behind you. Thankfully today technology is making this easier than ever before. Consider finding a low cost investment platform, and scheduling a fixed monthly transfer from your bank account directly into your investment accounts — and watch your money grow faster. The wrap Cash has its place — it gives you flexibility, stability, and peace of mind. But if most of your money is parked in cash, it's limiting your financial potential. With inflation not going away and the tax coming in on top, too much cash means slow progress. Smarter strategies, like minimising your savings, offset buffering, and automatic investing, all allow you to protect what matters while you grow your money.
