'A big journey for us' - Liverpool look to sustainable future

BBC News22-04-2025
"Make a difference together."That is what Liverpool want to be able to do with their supporters when it comes to sustainability. The impact of climate change is being felt in many different ways and football is not immune to these. While so much of fans' focus is on what is happening on the pitch, there is an increasing expectation from supporters that clubs should be doing more to reduce their impact off it.In the second part of our Earth Day chat with Rishi Jain, Liverpool's director of impact highlighted how important the relationship with fans is for the club's The Red Way sustainability programme."We want to be able to say to supporters that we're involved in 'x project' and to come and take part," he said. "Come and support it. Lead with us, and then we'll really make a difference together."We are tracking ahead in our target for awareness and that is helped through the continued support of LFC Foundation and the work they do through their engagement events."It is through this work that they have acquired fan support and managed to hit key milestones in the programme."It sounds very simple - with supporters putting plastic bottles into the right bins - but we have seen matchday recycling rates increase from 25% in 2021 to nearly 99% now, which is just brilliant," Jain explained."That's a really simple thing about asking supporters to change their behaviours. We've been on a journey with them. When we've put the message out, we've talked about the collective achievement. It's not been the club that has done this - it's with the help of our supporters that we've achieved this together."It's ultimately allowed us to collect 1,000,000 plastic bottles over a three-year period, which is just a huge number."We're all very superstitious, but we know that putting things in the right bin has actually become part of the intrinsic matchday routine and it's a nice thing for us to be able to talk about with them."Despite the progress made in the four years of The Red Way, Liverpool are determined not to stop."Could we do more? Absolutely," Jain added. "It's a big journey for us."I'm never going to sit there and just say: 'We've done a great job'. It's always: 'Yes, we've done good work, but this is the next goal'. We have ambitious targets."You can't sit there and go into these these rooms [such as COP] and say, 'we feel we're doing really well, but there's more to do' if you're not actually delivering that at home."We've got some key focus areas that we're really going to ramp up our efforts for."

Saturday briefing: Isak interests Liverpool and Son set for Tottenham exit

Alexander Isak's future was once again a red-hot topic as Liverpool reportedly upped their interest in the Newcastle striker on Friday. Tottenham captain Son Heung-min announced his intention to leave the club, while Spurs are closing in on the loan signing of Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich and Everton are pursuing a deal for Southampton teenager Tyler Dibling. Isak bid rejected Newcastle have rejected a bid from Liverpool for striker Alexander Isak, according to reports. The 25-year-old Sweden striker has been training at his old club Real Sociedad this week amid reports he has asked Newcastle executives to explore a move away from the club. He has been heavily linked with Liverpool, who are now reported to have made a bid for the player which Newcastle have knocked back. Isak still has three years left on his contract with Newcastle. Neither club has commented on the matter. Son Heung-min set for Tottenham farewell Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has revealed he will leave the club this summer. Son has spent the last decade at Spurs and achieved his goal of silverware in May when he helped them to Europa League success with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United. It ended a 17-year trophy drought for the club and South Korea captain Son explained his decision to target a 'fresh challenge' during a press conference in his home country ahead of Tottenham's pre-season friendly with Newcastle on Sunday. After Spurs arrived in Seoul on Friday, Son – following a remarkable 454 appearances and 173 goals for the north London club – confirmed his desire to depart this summer, with MLS outfit Los Angeles FC leading the race for his signature, the PA news agency understands. Son told a press conference: 'Before we start, I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer. 'Respectfully, the club is helping me with this decision. 'It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career, such amazing memories. It was so hard to make this decision.' Spurs close in on Palhinha Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha underwent a medical at Tottenham on Friday, the PA news agency understands. Spurs are eager to boost their squad for new boss Thomas Frank ahead of the club's return to the Champions League this season and set their sights on the Portugal international. Palhinha only signed for Bayern last summer from Fulham in a deal worth up to £47.4million but endured a difficult debut campaign and made only six starts in Bundesliga, which has opened the door for a return to the Premier League. Talks between Tottenham and Bayern got under way on Thursday and PA understands an agreement was reached with Palhinha given the green light to undergo a medical ahead of the proposed move. Lockyer nears football return Former Luton captain Tom Lockyer has revealed he is 'four weeks away' from being allowed to play football again. Lockyer has not played since suffering a cardiac arrest during Luton's Premier League game against Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in December 2023, while he collapsed on the field just seven months earlier during the Hatters' Sky Bet Championship play-off final win at Wembley against Coventry. Lockyer, speaking ahead of Luton's opening Sky Bet League One fixture against AFC Wimbledon at Kenilworth Road, told Sky Sports: 'I haven't had a break, I've been working all the way through, just trying to get this ankle right and trying to get fit. 'But I've had a really good few weeks and hopefully now I'm four weeks away from getting signed off and told I'm allowed to play football again.' Saints want more for Dibling Everton are looking to sign Tyler Dibling but are well below Southampton's current valuation, the PA news agency understands. The 19-year-old caught the eye during his breakthrough campaign, scoring four goals in 38 appearances in all competitions for the relegated side. A number of Premier League clubs have tracked Dibling's progress and Everton have seen an initial approach in the region of £27million rejected by the Championship club. The Toffees are reportedly ready to make another move for the England Under-21s international, but PA understands Saints want in excess of £40m for the academy graduate. What's on today? After Luton edged out AFC Wimbledon on Friday night, Sky Bet League One gets in full swing with 10 fixtures while there is a full League Two programme. Rangers get their Scottish Premiership campaign under way with a trip to Motherwell and Kilmarnock welcome Livingston.

Nuno Tavares and Marquinhos have been sold to Lazio and Cruzeiro respectively, while Jorginho, Kieran Tierney and Thomas Partey have been released. It is claimed that Real Madrid are open to selling Diaz this summer, with new manager Xabi Alonso informing the player that he would only have a 'secondary role' next season if he remained at the Bernabeu. The report states that Arsenal, AC Milan and Fenerbahce are all weighing up a move for the 24-year-old, while Saudi Pro League sides Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal and Neom SC are said to be willing to pay around €40m (£35m) for Diaz. Arsenal are one of several clubs interested in Brahim Diaz (Image: Alex Caparros) Arsenal have been warned that Liverpool's interest in Marc Guehi could scupper their move for Eberechi Eze. Arsenal are expected to make a move for Eze once they have offloaded some players, with the England international said to be keen on a move to the Emirates. However, Liverpool are interested in Eze's Crystal Palace teammate Guehi and that could complicate the situation. Palace are unlikely to sanction the exits of two key players this summer, although Liverpool are currently focused on their attempts to sign striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle. Arsenal are targeting a move for Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze (Image:) Tottenham boss Thomas Frank has backed Christian Norgaard to be a success at Arsenal, having managed the midfielder at both Brentford and Brondby. When asked about Norgaard's move to Arsenal, Frank said: "It was a little emotional. I've known him since he was 15. He's 31 now and I've been training him for 12 years so I can say that I've known him for a pretty long time. "This is the first time I've played against him. He played for me more than 300 games and it was a bit strange to see him on the other team. He's a top player and I can understand why Arsenal went for him. I'm so happy that he got this great opportunity late in his career." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. James Milner will wear number 20 at Brighton in memory of Diogo Jota

James Milner will wear the number 20 shirt at Brighton this season in memory of the late Diogo Jota, describing his former Liverpool team-mate as a 'great friend'. The Portuguese forward died aged 28 last month in a car crash, alongside his brother Andre Silva, just weeks after helping Liverpool clinch Premier League title glory. Liverpool have retired the number 20 jersey worn by Jota in his five seasons at Anfield, three of them alongside Milner before the veteran England midfielder moved to Brighton in the summer of 2023. The lowdown on our new 25/26 numbers… 💬 — Brighton & Hove Albion (@OfficialBHAFC) August 1, 2025 With Carlos Baleba opting to have 17 on his back ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and vacating 20, Milner, who has been Brighton's number six, has swooped in to pay a touching tribute to Jota. 'Once I heard Carlos was looking to change his number and 20 was available, I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and pay tribute to Diogo Jota,' Milner said on the club's X channel. 'He was an amazing player who I was fortunate to play with and a great friend as well. 'It will be a great honour to wear his number in the Premier League this year.' Milner – whose contract was extended by Brighton in June for another season, which will take him past his 40th birthday – was among a number of Jota's former team-mates who attended his funeral in July.
