Johnny Depp breaks silence on being dropped from Fantastic Beasts

Express Tribune09-07-2025
Johnny Depp has addressed his departure from the Fantastic Beasts film series, offering his perspective on how the exit unfolded.
The actor said the studio requested that he resign during the filming of the third installment, shortly after a UK court ruled against him in a high-profile libel case.
'They said, 'We'd like you to resign,'' Depp said in a recent interview. 'I knew it was coming. And I said, 'F*** you. No. You're not going to get me to resign.''
Depp portrayed the character Gellert Grindelwald in the first two Fantastic Beasts films. Following his exit, Warner Bros. recast the role with actor Mads Mikkelsen for the third entry, The Secrets of Dumbledore, released in 2022.
While discussing the period following his removal, Depp said the experience felt isolating and that he believed the studio no longer wanted him involved.
'They wanted me to just be gone. They wanted me to disappear,' he said.
Depp, now 61, is continuing to work on new projects. He is currently directing Modi, a biopic about artist Amedeo Modigliani, and is expected to star in the upcoming film Day Drinker alongside Jason Momoa.
Despite the challenges, Depp said he remains committed to creative work and has no plans to step back from acting or directing.

'The Conjuring: Last Rites' trailer unveils final case for Ed and Lorraine Warren

Warner Bros. has unveiled the official trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites, marking the final chapter of the long-running horror franchise. Set for theatrical release on September 5, 2025, the film will see Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson return as real-life paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren, closing a major era in modern supernatural cinema. Directed by Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun II), Last Rites is based on the infamous Smurl haunting in West Pittston, Pennsylvania. The case, which allegedly involved intense poltergeist activity in the 1970s, captured national attention and was later chronicled in Robert Curran's book The Haunted. In the film, the Warrens assist the Smurl family in confronting a violent demonic presence that has plagued their home for years. The trailer teases classic Conjuring elements: eerie premonitions from Lorraine, Ed's growing concern, and escalating paranormal activity. A younger version of the Warrens also appears, hinting at the film's exploration of their early years. The movie stars Mia Tomlinson, Ben Hady, Elliot Cowan, Steve Coulter, Kíla Lord Cassidy, Shannon Kook, and Rebecca Calder. The script is written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. While this installment is being billed as the final film in The Conjuring series, Warner Bros. has not ruled out future projects. A prequel series is reportedly in development at HBO Max, which may explore the couple's earlier investigations — possibly including the Amityville haunting. With The Conjuring franchise grossing over $2.2 billion to date, Last Rites aims to deliver a memorable send-off to one of horror's most financially and culturally impactful series of the 21st century.

Warner Bros Discovery to lay off 10% of film group, source says

LOS ANGELES: Warner Bros Discovery will lay off roughly 10% of its motion picture group employees as part of a restructuring before the company splits in two, a source with knowledge of the matter said on Wednesday. The cuts will take place in marketing, distribution, production and other units. The source did not disclose how many people would be affected. In a memo to staff, Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Pamela Abdy and Michael De Luca said company leadership had started reviewing the film group's operations in early 2025. They concluded they needed to make changes to 'transform our business as we transition from a US Home Office/International model to a fully global structure,' the memo said. Warner Bros Discovery has announced plans to separate into two publicly traded companies. One called Warner Bros will house the film group and the HBO Max streaming service. Fantastic Four' off to sizzling start

The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Disney's hotly anticipated reboot of the Marvel Comics superhero franchise, conquered the North American weekend box office, earning $118 million and sidelining Superman, industry estimates showed Sunday. Fantastic Four - starring actor-of-the-moment Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Emmy winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things) - tells the story of a team of heroes trying to save a retro-futuristic world from the evil Galactus. "This is an outstanding opening," said David A Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research. "Fantastic Four was a modest and struggling superhero series; it just caught up with the biggest and the best." Superman, the latest big-budget action film featuring the iconic superhero from Warner Bros and DC Studios, slipped to second place at $24.9 million, Exhibitor Relations said. That puts the global take of the film, starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, over the $500 million mark. Jurassic World: Rebirth - the latest installment in the blockbuster dinosaur saga - finished in third place at $13 million. Its worldwide total stands at $672.5 million. The Universal film, starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey and Mahershala Ali, takes viewers to an abandoned island research facility, where secrets - and genetically mutated dinosaurs - are lurking. F1: The Movie, the Apple and Warner Bros flick starring Brad Pitt as a washed-up Formula One driver who gets one last shot at redemption, moved up to fourth place at $6.2 million. Smurfs, the latest film featuring the adorable blue creatures and starring Rihanna as Smurfette, slipped to fifth place in only its second week in theaters with $5.4 million in North American ticket sales. "The box office is on an excellent run that started two weeks ago," Gross said. "These are not the good old days, but Fantastic Four and Superman are performing extremely well. Superheroes are showing some swagger, and it's good news for the industry." afp
