MUDA unbowed by Zahid's intimidation tactics; demand DPM be reindicted for 47 graft charges

'WE will not be intimidated!'
In an almost Churchillian declaration of defiance, MUDA has responded to a legal suit slapped on its secretary-general Ainie Haziqah Shafiee by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi.
Zahid who is also UMNO president has previously sent a notice of claim to Ainie asking for an apology and damages. Media reports states that the notice was sent following Ainie's speech which criticised Zahid's prior corruption charges during the recent Turun Anwar rally.
'This is an action of a coward and a hyporcrite,' declared MUDA's acting president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz in a media conference at the Lawyers For Liberty (LFL) headquarters in Petaling Jaya yesterday (Aug 18).
Arguing that this was an act of 'political intimidation', the Johor State Assembly member asked why the party's secretary-general was singled out when many others had voiced concerns of Zahid's perceived escape with a DNAA (dismissal not amounting to an acquittal) for his 47 graft charges.
In the no-holds barred media session, Amira slammed the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition for failing to uphold its electoral promises.
'In every campaign video and ceramah during GE15 (15th General Election), Zahid was labelled as 'corrupt' but they now stand shoulder to shoulder, laughing, hugging and making official visits to each other's governmental departments,' she pointed out, quite unable to hide her contempt.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was also not spared as his anti-graft campaign was belittled as a mere sham.
A clip of the media conference was shared on social activist and lawyer Siti Kasim's Facebook page with a one-worded message: 'SOKONG!! ' (Support).
The originally TikTok video has been viewed 9.2K times with many commenters in full agreement while one openly declaring that 'nobody is above the law'.
One commenter cast aspersions on enforcement agencies, in particular the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), insinuating unseen hands pulling levers to deceive the rakyat.
Another commenter highlighted the seeming 'favouritism' within the current regime, insinuating selective persecution.
A few concerned observers also pointed to the Sword of Damocles that hangs over Zahid's head. It is hard to imagine any other country where such a scenario could exist, they pointed out.
However, one commenter did ask the pertinent question – why was MUDA silent when now incarcerated former premier Datuk Seri Najib Razak was getting away with his 1MDB corruption scandal?
Another quickly clarified that the former 10-term Pekan MP's 1MDB-related case is still in progress. Furthermore, MUDA has been slapped with a suit by Zahid instead of Najib.
Another wondered if other DNAA cases should be re-opened, notably that of now Sabah governor Tun Musa Aman.
All said and done, it remains to be seen if MUDA has the political clout for to get the corruption case against the DPM reinstated. What is clear though that there is enough public support, judging from comments made on social media. – Aug 19, 2025

'You won a skirmish but in a bigger battle to come, all your dirty footprints in Penang will be wiped clean'

THE photograph of you berating outside a shuttered hardware store in Kepala Batas where an elderly man is cowering in fear inside will go down in infamy. You and your rat-tag group of foot soldiers were bent on bringing out the 59-year-old owner, Pang Chin Tian, to teach him a lesson on patriotism but fortunately, some good law-abiding citizens went to his defence. The human barricade formed outside the store was the only barrier that prevented you and your unruly supporters from illegally entering the business premises. We don't know what would have happened if there was no human shield to protect the life of the elderly man you derisively called apek. You and your gang probably had the intention of dragging him out, publicly mocked him and perhaps even forced him to climb up and unfurl the Jalur Gemilang correctly. Or to make him pulled his ears while squatting up and down to the jeers of the spectators. You ignored his sincere apology over the unintentional mistake he made for flying our national flag upside down. Did you achieve anything? The only victory you scored was to give the media the photo opportunity to pose yourself as the conquering hero of Kepala Batas. You must be feeling really proud to see all your photos splashed all over the papers – online as well as printed – advertising your bravery against one man shuddering in fear of his life. Do you call that bravery? No. It is bullying. Harassment. Intimidation. It is false courage fuelled by mob rule. It is the supporters behind your back that lent you the prop to stand tall. Of course, your adoring fans will want more of you and we are likely to witness – whether we like it or not – more of your silly antics. Having won a trophy on the battlefield of Kepala Batas, you will surely be eyeing for more trouble but beware: don't push the other races to the wall. Editor's Note: The long arm of the law has eventually caught up with the rightist Akmal who will on Friday (Aug 22) be charged under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code at the Bukit Mertajam magistrate's court over making statements deemed to threaten public order on his Facebook page. If you start lighting bonfires all over the country, you will face a backlash because Malaysia is our home and there is nowhere else for others to go except to fight back. But make no mistake about your mistake: by your irrational action, you have antagonised the major ethnic community in Penang who will remember the despicable incident come the 16th General Election (GE16). Your 'attack' was a mere 'border skirmish' but in the mother of all battles to come for the hearts and minds of the voters, you and your party will face a decisive battle. You can be certain that all your dirty footprints you left in Penang will be wiped clean on polling day – sending you and your tainted party packing off to oblivion. – Aug 20, 2025 Phlip Rodrigues is a retired journalist. Disabled STPM top scorer has received multiple full scholarship offers, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: The story of STPM top scorer Lim Chin Hong, who overcame personal challenges to achieve a perfect CGPA of 4.0, has sparked overwhelming support from universities and a philanthropist, offering him full scholarships. MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong ( pic ) said Lim's perseverance had inspired many, with several institutions quickly stepping forward to open doors for his future. "After I highlighted his journey, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) and Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) were the very first to offer him a place in his preferred course with full scholarship," he said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (Aug 20). Dr Wee said Asia Pacific University of Technology and Innovation (APU) and UCSI University later made similar offers, while another organisation and a Singaporean philanthropist pledged to cover his education expenses in full. He added that UCSI University also extended a full scholarship to another high-achieving student, Aniq, who is autistic and scored a CGPA of 3.83. Some had asked why I did not secure him a place in UTAR and TAR UMT, the two institutions founded by MCA. The fact is, they were among the first to make the offer," he said. Dr Wee explained that Lim had always aspired to study at a public university, a choice that must be respected. He also expressed his appreciation to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who assured that Lim would be given a place in a course of his choice at a public university. "I will personally convey every offer to his family and let him decide which path he wishes to take. What matters most is that he now has the opportunity and support to pursue his dream, all thanks to the compassion and kindness of so many Malaysians," Dr Wee said. ALSO READ: 'He will be given a place' Zambry had assured in Parliament that Lim, a high-achiever who lost his right leg due to a medical condition called hemangiona, would be considered for engineering programmes offered in public universities. Lim, a student from SMK Yong Peng who achieved a 4.0 CGPA in STPM 2024, was earlier denied the choice for engineering programmes on account of his disability. Zambry said he acknowledged while the rejection was based on reasons such as the institution lacking the necessary facilities, he admitted that such grounds were unacceptable and pledged policy changes to make public universities more inclusive. "We must change university policies to ensure greater inclusivity for OKU students. "Therefore, I wish to inform Yang Berhormat that this student, who scored full As, will be given a place," he added. Dr Wee highlighted Lim's plight after the science stream student discovered that all engineering courses were removed from his public university application due to his disability. Dr Wee questioned the broader admissions policy, citing the case of Aniq who scored a CGPA of 3.8, but was also unable to select preferred programmes. He stressed that government policies must not discriminate against persons with disabilities and urged the Higher Education Ministry to review policies to ensure equal opportunities for them. Zambry also said last week that Aniq's case would be resolved soon.
