Bukit Aman takes over case

Kuala Lumpur: A special nine-member task force from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has been deployed to Sabah to take over the investigation into Zara Qairina Mahathir's case. In a statement, the Office of the Inspector-General of Police Secretariat (Corporate Communications) said the deployment is part of the Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) commitment to ensure a transparent, professional and thorough investigation.

Netizens worldwide rally for justice for Zara Qairina
KUALA LUMPUR : The death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir has resonated not just at home but has gained international attention, as people in a number of countries have come forth to express their outrage. In Singapore, Facebook page Death Kopitiam Singapore wrote: "The cries for help of a helpless girl. The cries of a community at her death. The disillusionment of a nation." Meanwhile, in Hatyai, Thailand, schoolgirls in uniform held up posters with Zara's face, emblazoned with the words "Justice for Zara." One Thai girl posted an especially emotional post dedicated to Zara. "I ask everyone from around the world to join in shouting for justice for our little sister. She was a Malaysian who was attacked and killed. "I pray that you receive justice, little one. May the perpetrator be caught, and may you rest in peace in a serene land. With love and concern from your Thai sister #Justiceforzara #justiceforzaraqairina," she wrote. Similarly, in Indonesia, students shared similar messages and posts online. As far away as the United Kingdom, a Twitter user, Andy (@andychester\_), voiced frustration at authorities: "The school, police, hospital and even the Sabah and Education Ministers all failed her from the start. Similar calls were made from people in Brunei, Philippines, South Korea, China, Japan, Cambodia, Myanmar and even Laos, reported a Malay daily earlier. Zara fell from the third floor of her hostel in Papar, Sabah, on July 16 and died the following day. Police today admitted there were shortcomings in the early probe into the death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, who is now believed to be a victim of bullying. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar S. Muthuvelu said investigations uncovered statements indicating that there was bullying. Kumar also said that a special task force had also found non-compliance with investigation procedures.

Mother, son die after suspected food poisoning at wedding

TAWAU: A woman and her nine-year-old son died, believed to be from suspected food poisoning, after attending a wedding reception at a residential area in Batu 4, Jalan Apas here last Saturday. The victims, Nazuah Pili, 36, and Mohd Amran Masran, fell unconscious after suffering prolonged diarrhoea and vomiting upon returning home at around 11am. Tawau acting district police chief Superintendent Champin Piuh said the case was reported by a 24-year-old niece of the victim, who requested that an investigation into the deaths be opened. Initial questioning of the complainant and the victim's husband revealed the mother and son had brought back a food package from the reception, which the husband also consumed. Nurul Izzah: Zara Qairina's passing unites Malaysians
KUALA LUMPUR — Zara Qairina Mahathir's passing has brought Malaysians together across boundaries and differences, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar (picture). She said that, as a mother, she deeply understands the grief of the deceased's mother, who only wished to see her child grow up like other children – healthy and happy. 'Zara Qairina was like a daughter to all of us. She was polite, of noble character and a person who held firmly to religious teachings. Her passing has united us all across boundaries and differences,' she said in a Facebook post today. She also vowed to continue the fight until those responsible are punished accordingly and a safe environment is secured for Malaysia's children. 'We will continue to follow and closely monitor the latest developments through the announcements of Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and the Attorney-General's Chambers, because every child deserves to grow up in a safe environment, free from fear and threats.
