Nurul Izzah: Zara Qairina's passing unites Malaysians

KUALA LUMPUR — Zara Qairina Mahathir's passing has brought Malaysians together across boundaries and differences, said Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar (picture).
She said that, as a mother, she deeply understands the grief of the deceased's mother, who only wished to see her child grow up like other children – healthy and happy.
'Zara Qairina was like a daughter to all of us. She was polite, of noble character and a person who held firmly to religious teachings. Her passing has united us all across boundaries and differences,' she said in a Facebook post today.
She also vowed to continue the fight until those responsible are punished accordingly and a safe environment is secured for Malaysia's children.
'We will continue to follow and closely monitor the latest developments through the announcements of Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and the Attorney-General's Chambers, because every child deserves to grow up in a safe environment, free from fear and threats.
'This is our shared responsibility to remain vigilant, to protect and to ensure that such a tragedy does not happen again,' she said. — BERNAMA

Youths must show patriotism in daily life: YB

Published on: Friday, August 15, 2025 Published on: Fri, Aug 15, 2025 Text Size: Norazlinah signing the KMJG 2025 record book. KUNAK: Young people must play their part in showing love and loyalty to the country, said Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlinah Arif. She said youths should fulfil their responsibilities as Malaysians by demonstrating patriotism in their daily lives. 'My call is especially to the youths in Kunak, Sabah and throughout Malaysia — let us fulfil our responsibilities as citizens. Despite whatever polemics may arise, we must first prove our commitment to the nation. Before voicing too many negative views, it is far more important to set a good example, and that example must come from within ourselves. Let us prove our love and patriotism for our country,' she said after officiating the Kunak District-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) 2025 programme. Norazlinah said youths should not be excluded from nurturing a love for the nation. She commended Kunak's youth for winning first and second place in the National Storytelling competition organised by the Malaysia Information Department (JaPen). 'This shows that young people are no exception in having love for the country. I believe competitions and activities like these can inspire greater patriotism among our youths,' she said. The KMJG 2025 convoy, led by Sabah JaPen Director Jainisah Mohd Noor, arrived at the Kunak Youth Arena Hall after a 10-day journey covering 37 stops. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Cyber scams rising sharply

Home Ministry ramps up efforts as losses hit RM1.12bil ONLINE scams in Malaysia have caused a staggering RM1.12bil in financial losses in just the first half of 2025 alone, says the Home Ministry. It said that the government would begin intensifying its efforts and curb online scam losses in the country, which include strengthening the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), in response to the growing scam cases. The ministry said this would involve the creation of new positions involving various schemes. 'Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has also agreed for the NSRC to be placed under the direct supervision of the Home Ministry. It has also been decided that it will be led by the police force,' the Home Ministry said in a parliamentary written reply to R. Yuneswaran (PH-Segamat) on the amount of money lost by Malaysians due to online scams and the steps being taken to address the issue. The ministry also said it is studying the feasibility of drafting a Cybercrime Bill as part of its efforts to combat cybercrimes in the country. It added that its SemakMule portal, which enables the public to check bank account numbers, phone numbers and companies used by scammers, currently has 265,869 bank accounts, 211,265 phone numbers, and 12,724 company names recorded. On Aug 5, the Digital Ministry said online scam financial losses in 2024 reached a worrying RM1.58bil, a 2.53% increase from the year prior. It was reported earlier that to cope with an average of 500 scam-related calls per day, the government has approved an additional 139 permanent staff for the NSRC. In the interim, 40 Commercial Crime Investigation Department personnel have been deployed to assist operations. Currently, the NSRC is supported by personnel from the police, Bank Negara, calling agents appointed by the central bank and bank officers. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the NSRC's operations will be relocated to Cyberjaya by early September to allow all agencies to work under one roof.

187,652 individuals with debts get second chance

KUALA LUMPUR: At least 187,652 individuals with debts not exceeding RM200,000 have been freed from a life of bankruptcy from March 2023 until June 2025 as part of the government's Second Chance Policy, says M. Kulasegaran. The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said this included young adults under the age of 40. 'This achievement is proof of the government's push to implement reforms that deliver direct impact to the people. 'Through this effort, we have not just freed the people from the burden of debt, we have also helped to restore their self-worth, giving them a new chapter in life,' he said during the Ministry Question Time in Parliament yesterday. Kulasegaran said the government hopes this move will serve as a fresh start for Malaysians to move forward in their daily lives. 'It aims to provide a second chance to those in the early and mid stages of their careers, who are important assets to the nation, so they can recover and actively contribute again to the family and national economy,' he added.
