India Today16-07-2025
The Punjab Police's State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) arrested a serving Indian Army soldier for allegedly leaking classified military information to Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).According to the statement issued by the Punjab Police, the accused has been identified as Devinder Singh, a resident of Nihalgarh village in Sangrur district. He was arrested on July 14 from Uri in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district.advertisementThe arrest follows the earlier detention of ex-Army man Gurpreet Singh, alias Guri or Fauji, who was taken into custody on charges of espionage. Interrogation of Gurpreet Singh revealed Devinder's involvement in obtaining sensitive Army documents while Gurpreet was lodged in Ferozepur Jail.
These documents allegedly contained classified information that was later passed on to Pakistan's ISI.Following Devinder Singh's arrest, officials presented him before a Mohali court on July 15. The court granted a six-day police remand for further interrogation. The statement also added that the initial investigations suggest that Devinder and Gurpreet first met in 2017 during training at an Army camp in Pune. They reportedly maintained contact and later served together in postings in Sikkim and Jammu & Kashmir. During their service, both had access to confidential military material, some of which was allegedly leaked by Gurpreet. Authorities said that Devinder's precise role in the espionage network is still under investigation. - EndsMust Watch

'Repeatedly punched and kicked': 2 Punjab commandos assault journalist; suspended

BATALA : A disturbing video has emerged showing two Punjab Police commandos brutally assaulting a journalist in broad daylight on a busy street in Batala. The incident, which has sparked outrage, was caught on camera and widely circulated on social media. In the 2-minute 16-second clip, two men—one in police uniform and the other in civilian clothes—are seen repeatedly punching and kicking a man, identified as journalist Balwinder Singh. The assault takes place in full public view, with bystanders watching helplessly. During the assault, Balwinder collapses into a water-filled pothole and lies motionless as the attackers walk away. Shockingly, the man in civilian clothing returns to kick the victim again. Moments later, the uniformed officer also returns, seemingly to check on the victim, before walking away. Singh remains motionless on the road while passersby continue to look on. Eventually, a group of locals rushes to his aid, but the journalist appears unresponsive. Senior Superintendent of Police, Batala, Suhail Qasim Mir, said that the two attackers have been identified as Sub-Inspectors Mandeep Singh and Surjit, from the 5th Battalion of the Punjab Police Commandos, stationed in Bathinda. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo He added that they had been deployed to Batala for law and order duty in wake of Independence Day. Suhail said that the incident occurred on August 1, but the video went viral on Wednesday. Based on the victim's statement, the police took cognizance of the matter and registered an FIR on August 2 under the relevant sections. He further informed that the commander of the battalion has also been informed to initiate disciplinary action. Providing further details, Sanjiv Kumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Batala City, said that preliminary investigations revealed the two officers were staying at a hotel in Batala during their deployment. It was there that journalist Balwinder approached them and asked some questions—reportedly in connection with their presence . The exact nature of the conversation remains under investigation, but it appears that the line of questioning did not sit well with the officers which led to the heated exchange, the situation escalated, and the two sub-inspectors allegedly assaulted the journalist. Meanwhile, both the officers have been suspended, said Sanjiv.

It was reformed in 1963 and has since been deployed in places such as Germany, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan and across Africa for combat, humanitarian and rebuilding missions. In 2016, the Army chose the Spartan Brigade to become the 15th Armored Brigade Combat Team, a modern tank force, as part of its ongoing efforts to update its units. With inputs from agencies
