IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: Baffling! Ex-Australia all-rounder calls out India's gamble of going with 5 specialist batters
Former Australia all-rounder
Tom Moody
has slammed India's team selection for the second Test against England.
India revealed its lineup after England won the toss and surprised many by resting its best bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, and not picking wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, who was missed in the series-opening loss in Leeds last week.

Sai Sudharsan, who made his Test debut in Leeds, and Shardul Thakur were dropped, while Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar were picked in an attempt to balance batting depth with a side capable of taking 20 wickets. India became the first side to lose a Test after hitting five centuries. Bumrah was replaced by Akash Deep.
'India's selection for this Test is baffling,' Moody wrote on X.
'No Bumrah is one thing, but to only have five specialist batsmen is a gamble.
'The fixation on all-rounders who are there to offer depth with bat and ball has never worked. Specialists are always going to offer more over a Test.'
Former head coach and cricketer Ravi Shastri didn't mince his words while expressing his discontent with India's decision to rest the world number one speedster Jasprit Bumrah.
'You have the best fast bowler in the world, and you make him sit out after seven days' rest. It's something very hard to believe, and I can't agree with it,' Shastri said on Sky Sports.

Late selection meeting between Gautam Gambhir, Shubman Gill and Ajit Agarkar near pitch?
At the stroke of lunch, India lost Karun Nair (31) and KL Rahul (2), while Yashasvi Jaiswal continued to dazzle, swashbuckling his way to an unbeaten 62 (69) to propel the touring party to 98/2. Shastri reflected on India's exploits in the first session and delivered unstinting praise for Jaiswal.
'I think they will be pretty happy but disappointed with the timing of Nair's dismissal, shortly before lunch. That's when you need to be concentrating hard—but there was very little Nair could do as the ball bounced from a length,' Shastri said.
'Jaiswal batted beautifully—the mix of caution and aggression. He played to his off-side strengths and put anything loose away,' he added.

WI vs AUS: Steve Smith returns as Australia eye series sweep in Grenada; Josh Inglis makes way
Steve Smith (AP Photo) Steve Smith has been cleared to play in the second Test against West Indies, marking a significant boost to Australia's top order as they aim to seal a series win in Grenada starting Thursday. Smith missed the first Test in Barbados due to a dislocated finger sustained during last month's World Test Championship final. He rejoined the squad earlier this week and has now passed all fitness tests, including two solid training sessions and fielding drills, to reclaim his place at No. 4. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'He's ready to go, the finger held up well,' skipper Pat Cummins confirmed on match eve. 'He was really happy, particularly batting.' Josh Inglis , who managed scores of 5 and 12 in the opening Test, is the only player to make way for Smith in the playing XI. Poll Will Australia's top order perform better with Steve Smith back in the lineup? Yes, definitely No, it won't make a difference While Smith's batting return is a major fillip, his regular fielding duties will be altered. He is expected to avoid the slip cordon for fast bowlers due to the lingering effects of the injury, and may instead patrol mid-off or fine leg, though he could still field close for spin. 'He might not be in the slips too often – maybe for spin he'll be OK,' Cummins added. 'But you might see him running around a bit more.' EXCLUSIVE | David Gower on Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah and India's England tour Smith's return comes at a venue steeped in uncertainty - Grenada's National Stadium has hosted just four Tests in 23 years, and never one featuring Australia. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like "내장지방만 쏙 빠집니다!" 신현재, 복부 똥뱃살 순식간에 녹여 신현재 중년 복부비만 개선 더 알아보기 Undo Yet Cummins believes Smith's adaptability is key. 'That's one of his great strengths - he's scored runs all over the world,' the captain said. 'He seems to work out quickly what needs to be done, especially on unfamiliar surfaces.' On the West Indies side, veteran Kraigg Brathwaite will play his 100th Test - only the 10th Caribbean cricketer to reach the milestone. 'He's a modern-day legend,' said captain Roston Chase. 'He stated early that he wanted to play 100 Tests, and it's amazing to see him achieve that.' Australia lead the two-Test series 1-0 after a 159-run win in Barbados, and will be aiming to complete a clean sweep against a home side still uncertain about its bowling combination, with Anderson Phillip and Jomel Warrican vying for the final spot. WATCH: Yashasvi Jaiswal fires back after England skipper Ben Stokes tries to sledge him in second Test match at Edgbaston
Yashasvi Jaiswal gets engaged in a heated argument with Ben Stokes. New Delhi: Yashasvi Jaiswal has never kept restrain of taking down biggest opposition names ever. That was evident after the case with Mitchell Starc in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Such was the case in the second Test against England when Jaiswal was involved in another hot episode, but this time against Ben Stokes or on the 1st day of the rivalry. It was not Jaiswal who initiated it unlike in the past. England captain was the first to spark the banter and the Indian opening batsman did so was cool as a cucumber. Some heated JAISBALL 🆚 BAZBALL on display! 👀#ENGvIND 👉 2nd Test, Day 1 | LIVE NOW on JioHotstar ➡ — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) July 2, 2025 Within minutes before lunch, Brydon Carse gave a rising delivery steep and hard, and it just hit the outside edge of Karun Nair bat and flew true and straight to Harry Brook who stood second slip. The swing was not very obvious to be found, but the ball was seaming a good deal about the first hour. On a number of occasions, Carse targeted the rib cage of Jaiswal, but the left-hander dealt with the situation well without any injury. Jaiswal went off to a glamorous couple of beautiful cover drives off Carse, who bowled full on purpose conceding only the odd short ball to the body. Along with such fluent drives, the lefty also demonstrated a pull shot and a sharp slap over backward point against Ben Stokes. In the 17th over when Jaiswal ran a single off a ball he was on 35, Stokes tried to get into an argument with the batsman. Cool as ever, Jaiswal continued and soon got his 11th Test half-century a splash later. Change in batting order for Karun Nair Moved up the batting order to No.3 position ahead of the last match, Nair was fed a number of full balls by England pacers- and he did not disappoint, sending clean drives through cover and beyond the ground straight to the boundary. Changes in the bowling line-up Pulled in boundary ropes were noted by many at Edgbaston before the toss. India rested key pacer Jasprit Bumrah in the match and gave his place to a rookie Akash Deep, as well as making two significant changes, where it added Washington Sundar to replace Sai Sudharsan and Nitish Kumar Reddy in place of Shardul Thakur. Kuldeep Yadav once again failed to make the cut as India preferred another spinner in the batting all rounder Washington Sundar. The reasoning behind the move to reinforce the batting order also surprised a few since the team of concern was having a hard time getting 20 wickets in Leeds.
