The Bengal Files: Director Vivek Agnihotri had no permission for trailer launch in Kolkata, says police insider
The hotel organisers, along with the police, allegedly interrupted the event. According to Agnihotri, last-minute instructions blocked the screening even though all permissions had been taken.
Now, a Kolkata Police officer has claimed that the filmmaker had no permission for the trailer launch. According to Kolkata Police sources, Agnihotri did not take any permission for public screening.
"If he has taken the required permission, he should at least show the media the documents," the insider told NDTV.
The trailer launch violated Section 3 of the West Bengal Cinemas (Regulation) Act, 1954, which controls film exhibitions in the state, according to officials.
The Bengal Files is set to release nationwide on September 27. The cast includes Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Pallavi Joshi, Darshan Kumaar. All four also featured in The Kashmir Files.
Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar alleged that it was Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's conspiracy to block the release of The Bengal Files. The film highlights communal violence in undivided Bengal during the 1940s, including Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots.
According to the BJP leader, Bengal's current situation mirrors this suppression.
'She (Mamata Banerjee) does not want the real history to come out. It is a democracy, and you cannot resist anyone from making films. There are many films that are made against the present government. It is a kind of freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of the director," Majumdar told ANI.
Vivek Agnihotri alleged that the authorities had cut all the wires. He said it was something that had never happened inside a private hotel.
'Who are these people who don't want anyone to know about this? Who are these people hounding us? You all know the answer,' Agnihotri said to the audience present at the event.
The controversial filmmaker mentioned several FIRs and ongoing legal battles. A multiplex chain in Kolkata refused to show the trailer, he said.
Agnihotri alleged that the ITC hotel manager stopped the running event without reason even though the organisers had 'full permission'.
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh has called Agnihotri's allegation 'baseless'.
"If he has guts, first make 'Gujarat Files' on the Godhra riots, then go to Manipur, make 'Manipur Files'. Go to UP - Unnao, Hathras, Prayagraj, and make 'UP Files'. He is planted by a political force," Ghosh said.
"He made 'Kashmir Files' and now he is blaming West Bengal, distorting facts, and maligning West Bengal. He is doing his job assigned by the BJP," he added.

Ineligible persons posted at drug rehab, de-addiction centres, finds DC
An inquiry conducted by the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Tarn Taran has allegedly found a nexus involving officials and a private contracting firm for recruiting ineligible persons into the district's drug de-addiction and rehabilitation facilities through outsourced contracts. The border district is one of the worst affected by the problem of drug menace. DC Rahul has recommended registration of police case based on inquiry report. The complainant claimed that contract was allegedly awarded illegally by the then Deputy Medical Commissioner, Dr Ramandeep Singh Padda. 'The contractor Davinder Singh was allegedly running a nexus through which he and his associates prepared fake degrees and documents, collected large sums of money from people, and gave them jobs. In this scheme, Rs 5 lakh was taken for the post of counsellor, Rs 3 lakh for staff nurse, and Rs 2 lakh for data entry operator, despite the degrees being fake. In July 2023, the company allegedly collected Rs 6,000 from each person in the name of verification, without issuing any receipt. The documents of the company's director and those submitted by the company are alleged to be fake. At the time of awarding the contract, Dr Padda is alleged to have carried out no verification,' says complainant Harjinder Singh. The inquiry report states that Asian Advanced Development Pvt Ltd, contracted to provide manpower from July 1, 2023, to March 31, 2024, charged unlawful 'verification fees' and allegedly took bribes for recruitment. The company's manager and contractor, Davinder Singh, has been accused of concealing facts about the contract, failing to follow contractual terms, submitting incomplete or misleading records, and harassing employees who raised complaints. The report further adds that the then Deputy Medical Commissioner Dr Padda, now posted as Senior Medical Officer (SMO) at Sur Singh, is alleged to have colluded with the contractor by failing to scrutinise documents and by ignoring irregularities in the recruitment process. The report cites evidence that fake certificates were used to hire several outsourced employees, including counsellors and data entry operators. It also refers to a legal agreement dated August 16, 2023, which allegedly shows that Rs 26.86 lakh was collected for recruitment as bribe. Several other outsourced staff are suspected to have been appointed without proper verification. The Deputy Commissioner has recommended forwarding the matter to the Senior Superintendent of Police, Tarn Taran, for detailed investigation, describing it as a matter of criminal nature. In a letter dated July 28, 2025, the incumbent Deputy Medical Commissioner of Tarn Taran reported alleged false patient entries and misuse of Buprenorphine tablets at two state-run opioid assisted treatment (OOAT) centres in the district. Buprenorphine, a controlled substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, is intended to help individuals gradually withdraw from opioid dependence. However, health officials say that some addicts extract and inject the medicine for a more intense 'kick'.' 'These tablets are not available in the open market and are dispensed strictly through prescription under controlled medical supervision,' a senior health official said. 'They are primarily used in de-addiction centres as part of opioid substitution therapy.' In letter addressed to the Senior Medical Officers of Ghariyala and Khadoor Sahib, the Deputy Medical Commissioner said that inspections at the OOAT Centre in Kiratowal (CHC Ghariyala) on July 28, 2025, and the OOAT Centre in Khadoor Sahib on July 25, 2025, revealed 'serious irregularities' in patient records and the distribution of medicines. According to the official, when the previous week's records were reviewed, the number of patients at the centres did not match the number of entries made online. The letter alleges that staff were 'consistently making false entries' and misusing OOAT medicines. The matter had also been referred to the Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police, Tarn Taran, for further investigation and possible action against the staff involved. In this matter too the police investigation hasn't started yet. Besides, these irregularities, these centres also witnessed theft of Buprenorphine from OOAT centres. The most recent incident occurred on July 1 at the Bhagupur Drugli Rehabilitation and OOAT centre in Tarn Taran. According to officials, a thief broke into the premises but was apprehended on the spot by security personnel and handed over to the police. The police also registered an FIR against the accused for stealing the fan from the facility at the Sadar Patti police station. On February 2, 2025, staff at the community health centre (CHC) at Ghariala reported that the door of the OOAT centre was found broken. Upon inspection, they discovered that the box containing Buprenorphine medicines had been forcibly opened. As many as 296 tablets of 2 mg and 5,626 tablets of 0.4 mg were reported stolen, according to officials. On March 3, 2025, thieves again targeted the CHC Ghariala. Items stolen included an air conditioner, a camera, a fan, and 3,151 tablets of 2 mg buprenorphine, officials said. Further, on May 25, all the Buprenorphine tablets were stolen from the civil hospital in Ajnala. Another theft was reported on December 13, 2024, at the Aam Aadmi Clinic in Rattagudda village in Tarn Taran. In this case, one air conditioner and a tablet charger were reported missing.

DPS Dwarka receives bomb threat; school evacuated, search operations on

On July 18, over 50 schools across Delhi reported receiving bomb threat emails on a single morning, leading to panic and large-scale evacuations. Those included prominent institutions such as St Xavier's in Civil Lines, Richmond Global School in Paschim Vihar, Abhinav Public School in Rohini, and The Sovereign School in Rohini. Earlier in July, threats were also reported at St Stephen's College and St Thomas School in Dwarka, a day after three other schools in the city had received similar hoax emails. At least seven schools were targeted on July 17, the third consecutive day of such threats. Police later traced one of the hoax emails to a 12-year-old boy in south Delhi, who was found to have sent the message as a prank. He was questioned, counselled, and sent home. While all previous threats turned out to be hoaxes, the repeated incidents have raised concerns among parents and school authorities. Former Delhi chief minister and AAP leader Atishi had criticised the Centre and the BJP-led civic administration last month, saying: 'Think of the trauma that children, parents and teachers would be going through. BJP controls all four engines of governance in Delhi, and is yet not able to provide any safety or security to our children! Shocking!' Officials said that precautionary evacuations will remain the standard response until each threat is verified. Investigations are underway to trace the source of Sunday's call to DPS Dwarka.

Family claims living patient taken for postmortem, creates ruckus in Bihar hospital
The Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in Bihar's Purnia witnessed a ruckus when the members of an accident victim's family allegedly assaulted hospital staff, accusing them of sending their 'living relative' for postmortem. According to authorities, two speeding motorcycles collided head-on near a petrol pump in Purnia on Saturday afternoon, severely injuring three men. Police rushed all of them to the GMCH, where doctors pronounced two men 'brought dead', while the third succumbed to his injuries during treatment. After the staff declared them dead, the bodies were taken for postmortem. However, in the postmortem room, one of the relatives claimed to have seen blood flowing from the body of one of the deceased, identified as Mohammad Najim. Family members then created a ruckus and took Najim's body back to the emergency ward, demanding renewed medical attention. While the victim was again declared dead, a crowd of agitated family members and their supporters allegedly cornered medical staff, attempted physical confrontations, and tried to forcibly detain one doctor, sources said. A video from the hospital has since been widely shared on social media platforms, including the X account of the RJD. Sharing the video, the Opposition party wrote, 'At GMCH, Purnia, a living patient was declared dead and sent for postmortem! In the incompetent and corrupt BJP-Nitish government, Bihar's 'inauspicious' healthcare system is causing immense suffering to the common people every day!' Hospital authorities, however, claimed that all clinical protocols, from trauma management to postmortem procedures, were followed. A GMCH official said, 'Three patients from a road traffic accident were brought in by police. Two were already brought dead, and despite all possible efforts, the third also succumbed. The deaths were confirmed by repeated medical checks, including an ECG showing a flat line. In the postmortem room, relatives, however, mistook signs of posthumous bleeding for life and confronted our team.' With the situation deteriorating, police reinforcements from multiple police stations were sent to the hospital, where, after long discussions and explanations, the crowd eventually dispersed.
