Volatility is a growth opportunity: Nasscom president
Empower your mind, elevate your skills
Geopolitics, trade tariffs, and rapid tech shifts are creating constant unpredictability but this volatility isn't a threat but a growth opportunity, Nasscom president Rajesh Nambiar said on Tuesday at the industry body's People Summit. He believed India is well-placed to lead through its strengths in GCCs, ER&D, and a rising tech-driven talent pool.He opened the Summit with a call to reimagine work and reposition talent for a changing world. In an era defined by uncertainty, he outlined why leadership must evolve, starting with people."We look at the uncertainty as a challenge and then the fact that there is so much opportunity," he said. "This is not going to happen without a significant focus on people and talent becomes the undercurrent for everything. Our business leaders have to be people leaders and our HR leaders will have to be business leaders."He went on to add that culture and engagement will be a driving factor and that hiring should focus on skills, not degrees. Further, he felt that HR tech and AI must be embedded into workflows to stay competitive. Nambiar highlighted that in order to build a hybrid future of humans and AI, learnability should be at the core.At the Summit, Tamil Nadu's minister for Information Technology and Digital Services, P Thiaga Rajan spoke of the intersection of technology, people, policy, and infrastructure. He highlighted the need for AI to touch the lives of citizens at every level of society."The only real long term solution is that it has to be ubiquitous, it has to be comprehensive and it has to be across all levels of interaction," he said. "It can't be only people with smartphones or only people with laptops. It needs to be at every level of society. Technology on the government side and citizens on the other side. It has to be comprehensive."Nasscom also announced the formation of its new Talent Council — a strategic industry-led initiative dedicated to building a future-ready, globally competitive digital workforce . It announced Satish H. C., chief delivery officer at Infosys , as the chair of the Council."With over three decades of experience in global talent strategy, innovation, and digital transformation, Satish will lead the council's efforts to shape a globally competitive, high-trust industry workforce," Nasscom said in a statement. The Council will seek to unlock new models for talent mobility, retention, and models, while driving regionally distributed employability programs. Equally, it aims to strengthen data-driven decision-making by enabling access to exclusive research, market intelligence, and global best practices to shape organisational strategies.

India commends push for peace by Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin
Synopsis India lauded the US-Russia summit in Alaska, emphasizing dialogue and diplomacy for resolving the Ukraine conflict. The MEA urged Ukraine and the EU to prioritize a swift peace settlement. (@mfa_russia on X via PTI Photo) (PTI08_16_2025_000200B) New Delhi: India on Saturday welcomed the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia and noted that their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable. "India appreciates the progress made in the Summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine," MEA spokesperson said in a statement. This in a indirect message to both Ukraine and the EU to focus on an early peace settlement instead of dragging the war. Highly placed told ET that the ball is now in the courts of Ukraine and EU to work towards peace and final settlement. Earlier India had endorsed the Summit and suggested that it can contribute to the efforts. India is hoping that a ceasefire could lift additional 25 per cent tariffs imposed on it on account of buying Russian oil which Trump claimed is fuelling "war efforts". Meanwhile US President Donald Trump has suggested he may put off implementing secondary or penalty tariffs as a result of the talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin indicating that India may not be facing any extra secondary sanctions over and above 50 % tariffs. In an interview to US's Fox News after the talks, Trump said that he would consider the question of the penalty tariffs on Russian oil in "two or three weeks". Asked about tariffs on China which imports even more oil than India, Trump said that "because of what happened today, I think I don't have to think about that now," adding, "I think you know, the meeting [with Putin] went very well".

‘Maybe I won't have to do it': Trump on India's additional 25% tariffs for buying Russian oil
Before his meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump on Friday suggested the US may not move ahead with secondary tariffs on countries continuing to buy Russian crude, a measure that had decreased India's trade competitiveness and raised concerns. 'Well, he (Russian President Vladimir Putin) lost an oil client, so to speak, which is India, which was doing about 40 per cent of the oil. China, as you know, is doing a lot…And if I did what's called a secondary sanction, or a secondary tariff, it would be very devastating from their standpoint. If I have to do it, I'll do it. Maybe I won't have to do it,' Trump said Friday in an interview with Fox News aboard Air Force One en route to Alaska for his summit with Putin. .@BretBaier: Would you sense that Putin comes to this table maybe in an economic pinch?@POTUS: 'If I did what's called a secondary sanction or a secondary tariff, it would be very devastating from their standpoint. If I have to do it, I'll do it. Maybe I won't have to do it.' — Rapid Response 47 (@RapidResponse47) August 15, 2025 The meeting ended without an agreement on ending the Russia-Ukraine war. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had earlier warned that if 'things don't go well' at the summit, Washington could escalate secondary tariffs on India for purchasing Russian oil. 'Sanctions can go up, they can be loosened. They can have a definitive life. They can go on indefinitely,' he told Bloomberg. Trump has already imposed tariffs totalling 50 per cent on India, including 25 per cent on Delhi's Russian oil imports, effective August 27. Trump, before meeting Putin, had suggested that his tariffs on India 'essentially took them out of buying oil from Russia,' and 'probably' played a role in bringing Moscow to the negotiating table. India has called the targeting 'unjustified and unreasonable,' with the Ministry of External Affairs saying it will 'take all necessary measures to safeguard national interests and economic security.' New Delhi on Saturday 'welcomed' the meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska and 'appreciated the progress made'. 'India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable… India appreciates the progress made in the Summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine,' MEA's official spokesperson said. (With Inputs from PTI)

S Jaishankar Speaks To UK Counterpart David Lammy On Ukraine Conflict
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday spoke to his British counterpart David Lammy and discussed the Ukraine conflict, along with the US-Russia summit talks regarding it. Mr Jaishankar took to X to inform about the same. He said, "Our discussions covered the recent Ukraine developments and other issues". Appreciate the call from UK FS @DavidLammy. Our discussions covered the recent Ukraine developments and other issues. 🇮🇳 🇬🇧 — Dr. S. Jaishankar (@DrSJaishankar) August 16, 2025 US President Donald Trump and Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, met face-to-face for the first time in seven years on Friday for talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. India has welcomed the Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "commendable" step towards ending the Ukraine war. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy, the government has said in a statement, hours after the two leaders addressed a joint press conference, but stopped short of signing a deal to ensure peace. "India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia. Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable. India appreciates the progress made in the Summit. The way forward can only be through dialogue and diplomacy. The world wants to see an early end to the conflict in Ukraine," said a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs. Specifically for India, the summit was important because of the hefty tariffs imposed by the US on Indian imports for buying Russian oil. Indian goods face over 50% tariff, including 25% secondary tariffs, in the US, with Trump accusing India of funding the Russian war machine.
