NHAI to close five toll plazas on L&T bypass road from August 1

Time of India2 days ago
Coimbatore: Much to the relief of commuters on the 28km-long Neelambur-Madukkarai stretch, there will be just one toll plaza, instead of the current six, from August 1.
The bypass road was maintained by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Limited until May 31, although L&T had handed over the stretch to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on March 31.
The NHAI started collecting tolls from June 1.
A Senthil Kumar, project director, NHAI, Coimbatore, said the number of toll plazas on the stretch will be reduced to one from August 1. "Only the last toll plaza near Madukkarai will remain operational, while the remaining five will be closed. Tolls will be collected as per the NH Fee Rule 2008. We will provide various services like ambulance, medical, transport, patrolling, crane, restrooms and drinking water facilities round the clock.
Vehicles bearing Coimbatore registration will be given concessions."
He said the removal of five toll plazas will greatly benefit the local people. "Motorists traveling from Karpagam University signal to Neelambur and vice versa need not pay the toll like earlier."
Senthil Kumar said the tolls collected will be used for the maintenance and development purposes. "The NHAI has appointed a firm to prepare a detailed project report to enhance the quality of the road.

Once the project report is ready, work to expand the road into four lanes will begin. Until then, the contractor will implement short-term measures to prevent accidents."
In an official press release, district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar said a contractor will be appointed to carry out maintenance work. "All necessary steps will be taken to make this bypass a safe road for motorists. Toll collected from the plaza will be used for developing and maintaining the road."

Point in case, robot cops, who have gone viral across the globe for directing traffic on the streets of Shanghai. A video of the "Robocop" dressed like a police officer giving directions at an intersection has gone viral on social media. A humanoid robot named Xiao Hu, sporting an oversized white helmet, LED tube lighting and reflective yellow fabric, was seen giving instructions to pedestrians in the streets of the Huangpu District of Shanghai on Wednesday evening. The voice instructions being given by the Robocop included "red light, please stop," and standard hand signals to direct foot traffic across the intersection. All of its physical movements and verbal commands have been modelled according to the Chinese traffic policing practices, making it act just like a human police officer. Belgian Grand Prix results: Oscar Piastri beats Lando Norris once again to register sixth win of the F1 season

Oscar Piastri wins Belgian Grand Prix (Image credit: F1) The order on the podium continues to remain unchanged, with Oscar Piastri winning his sixth race of the season at the Belgian Grand Prix. The McLaren driver was followed by his teammate Lando Norris in second, and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in third. Max Verstappen, however, missed out on the podium by finishing fourth in his home race at the iconic Spa-Francorchamps. Belgian Grand Prix 2025 highlights Sunday's race in Belgium was delayed by around 80 minutes due to heavy rainfall. The podium finishers were the same as the top three on the grid after Saturday's qualifying. While Norris started from pole, Piastri joined him on the front row in second, and Leclerc started third. All three drivers managed to maintain their positions on the wet track. Talking about his strategy after clinching victory, Piastri said, 'Lively, very lively! I knew Lap 1 would probably be my best chance of winning the race. I got a good exit out of Turn 1, lifted as little as I dared, and yeah. We had it mostly under control from there. I was a bit disappointed with the rolling start as I thought that would take away the opportunity. But when I was that close through Eau Rouge, I knew I was going to lift a little less than Lando. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Proud of my first lap. I had the same plan as Norris if I was second — I knew that was a likely decision for him, but the medium was the sensible tyre for me.' Norris, who started on pole but lost the winner's trophy to Piastri, said after the race, 'Oscar just did a good job, nothing more to say. Committed more through Eau Rouge, got the slipstream and the run. That was it, nothing else I could do at that point. Oscar deserved it today. Shoulda, woulda, coulda. Oscar deserved it. I'll review my things, but still happy for the team — another 1-2, and our first 1-2 here in many, many years. Autorickshaw union plans to launch app to tackle refusal menace in Mumbai

Mumbai: The Mumbai Rickshawmen's Union on Sunday announced its plan to launch an app aimed at combating the refusal menace. The app will assure commuters of a ride and allow autorickshaw bookings while ensuring payment is made only by the RTO-approved meter. Union leader Thampy Kurien, who proposed the idea to the transport department, is set to demonstrate it to officials at Mantralaya this week. "Unlike Ola and Uber, our app will not calculate fares that are low, very high, or dynamic in nature. It will merely book an auto and ensure pickup from your doorstep or wherever you are waiting. After the pickup, the driver will flag down the meter and take you to the destination, collecting the actual fare as per the meter, " Kurien told TOI. It will seek MMRTA approval for any fare above the RTO-approved meter fare, said Kurien. He explained that the app's necessity arises after a series of refusals by auto drivers. Police statistics indicate there were nearly 4.7 lakh challans in 2024 for refusals by autos and taxis, with auto refusals accounting for over 70%. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Interested in Investing? Kurien further indicated that he plans to challenge Ola and Uber autorickshaws operations in the city in Bombay high court. These vehicles do not operate by the meter despite drivers possessing state badges and permits, which require that vehicles function "only by the meter". Uber and Ola officials were unavailable for comment. Kurien also plans to petition the transport department to regulate autorickshaw operations outside railway stations. "At present, there are three different groups of autos – one which stands in queue and picks up passengers with no questions asked, the other which picks up while on the go, and a third group of cartel which parks autos at a distance and demands hefty share fares for popular destinations such as Linking Road, beaches, waterfronts, promenades, etc," he said. "We want govt to have a single queue outside all railway stations. If autorickshaws do not want to join this queue, they will have to drop passengers and leave the station precincts immediately. Those in queue should observe discipline and ferry all passengers – short or long distance," he added.
