Kota Kinabalu: The prolonged water supply issue at Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) is being addressed, with Sabah Works Minister Datuk Shahelmey Yahya confirming that inflow into the campus reservoir has been consistent in recent days. 'Water supply has recovered over the last two days. Hopefully, it will stabilise for now and in the future,' he said, adding that efforts are underway to ensure the problem does not recur. He said the issue partly stemmed from a faulty indicator in the university's main reservoir, known as R13, which had given inaccurate water level readings. 'The water inflow into R13 has been consistent lately. However, the existing indicator for the tank is no longer accurate. JANS (Water Department) will replace it within three weeks,' he said when contacted following a site inspection at UMS Sunday. 'In the meantime, JANS will supply regular water level information to UMS on an hourly and daily basis. This data will help the university better schedule its pumping operations,' he said. Shahelmey added that earlier this week, one of the campus pumps had broken down, but it has since been repaired. 'Currently, both pumps are operational,' he said.
Advertisement R13 has a total capacity of 10 million litres, while UMS also has two other tanks — one holding 6.75 million litres and a newer tank with 3.5 million litres, according to the minister. Shahelmey said JANS and UMS had held a series of meetings to address the situation, with the latest meeting held on Monday. 'Both parties have agreed on an approach to improve the volume of water into R13 and streamline the pumping schedule from the UMS side,' he said. He also expressed concern over an open letter by a UMS student addressed to the Sarawak Premier that went viral, saying he was disappointed to see the matter raised on social media while solutions were being worked on. The student had appealed for intervention over water woes at the campus, sparking widespread online attention. SANDAKAN: Sandakan residents continue to endure water disruptions with little improvement despite repeated government assurances, said Sandakan Indian Association Patron Taren Sunil Manoharan. 'We keep hearing that solutions are coming, but the dry taps tell a different story,' he said, adding that families are struggling daily with no relief in sight. The latest outage hit Taman Melrose at Mile 3½, Jalan Utara, where low pressure began on May 23, followed by a complete cut-off by May 28. Though supply resumed a day later, weak pressure persisted, disrupting households and schools. 'Unplanned outages add unnecessary stress, especially for working parents and children,' he said. Water woes plague much of Sabah, with frequent pipe bursts and machinery failures cited as causes. While scheduled maintenance is understandable, Taren criticised delayed responses to emergencies, such as unrepaired leaks wasting treated water. Frustration also mounts over the Water Department's unresponsive CareLine, leaving residents without updates. Taren urged ministers and local leaders to act decisively. 'A senior minister once hinted at restructuring the Water Department and an MP demanded dismissals. But we need real action, not just talk,' he said. While demanding accountability, Taren acknowledged that underfunding and ageing infrastructure may be key hurdles. 'If funding is the issue, the government must admit it. Frontline staff should not bear all the blame. Sabahans have suffered too long, this crisis must end,' he said. Court to hear Muhyiddin's reference bid on August 28

(Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here will hear Muhyiddin Yassin's bid to refer legal questions to the apex court on the validity of certain provisions under the Sedition Act on Aug 28. The former prime minister is accused of making seditious statements during the Nenggiri by-election in Gua Musang, Kelantan, last year. Justice Jamil Hussin fixed the date after lawyer Joshua Tay, appearing for Muhyiddin, told the court that the defence and prosecution had agreed on the date. The court then instructed the prosecution and defence to file their submissions by Aug 14. Deputy public prosecutor Razali Che Ani appeared for the prosecution. Muhyiddin allegedly said he was not invited by the then Yang di-Pertuan Agong to be sworn in as prime minister following the 2022 general election, despite having obtained the majority support of 115 MPs. If found guilty, the Perikatan Nasional chairman and Bersatu president will face a jail term that could extend to three years or a maximum fine of RM5,000. Muhyiddin was initially charged at the Gua Musang sessions court in August last year. Online fraud in Melaka costs victims RM30.85m in five months
MELAKA: A total of 934 online scam cases with losses amounting to RM30.85 million were recorded in Melaka from January 1 to June 2 this year. State Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Communications Committee deputy chairman Datuk Mohd Noor Helmy Abdul Halem said all the cases were reported through the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) and the police. During the same period, authorities arrested 531 individuals linked to online scam syndicates, with 312 of them charged in court. 'This year's largest individual loss involved a victim who lost RM2.9 million. Alarmingly, more professionals—including doctors, bank officers and corporate managers—are falling victim to these scams, not just ordinary citizens or civil servants,' he told reporters here today. He noted that while total losses were slightly lower than the same period last year, online scams remain a serious concern and ongoing awareness efforts are crucial. The most common scams reported involved fake investments on Telegram and Facebook, bogus job offers, and non-existent house-cleaning services. 'Despite being aware of the risks, many victims were lured in due to greed and impulsive decisions,' he added. Mohd Noor Helmy was speaking after launching the Content Creator Enhancement Workshop under the Anti-Scam Awareness Campaign, which saw the participation of around 50 individuals, including MADANI community leaders. The programme, held in collaboration with the Melaka Information Department, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the police, also trained participants to create digital content and serve as information agents to raise public awareness of online scams.
