Skilled Workforce: Port Erie Plastics

Yahoo19-02-2025
Preparing the next generation of skilled workers — That's the role of Erie High School's Career and Technical program.
Two senior Erie High students are currently working co-op at a Harborcreek company.
Port Erie Plastics offers high-quality plastic fabrication services. They manufacture a variety of products from storage units for the food industry, to temporary flooring, and water pipes for home and commercial buildings.
With over 400 employees, Port Erie currently provides on-the-job training to Erie High career tech machining students.
'We have two students who come here every week to work with our experienced toolmakers and hopefully be the next generation coming in and taking over for that team,' according to Heather Evans, Human Resource manager.
One of them is Daniel Miller, working at Port Erie during his senior year, continuing a family tradition. He said, 'My dad's a machinist. He's been all over the place in Erie. It always inspired me. He'd always come home and tell me stories.'
Miller added, 'So, I got like, I wanted to do it so when I went to Erie High I figured I could do machining trade, so then I chose it, and it led me here.'
Another Erie High student at Port Erie is a guy everyone calls Knobby. Nawid Ullahqudiri is Afghan and came to Erie a few years ago. He appreciates his Erie High machine training and the opportunity to operate machines at Port Erie. He likes the work and says it's interesting and fun!
Jason Campbell graduated from Erie High five years ago and is progressing in his manufacturing career. He's currently an apprentice in the tool and die program. He said, ' I came from being an operator for CNC. Pays decent. But then once you get advanced you start like, tool and die making, I'm doing an apprentice right now, and they make a lot of money.'
Working co-op is a win-win for students and the company. Evans says there's lots of opportunity in this industry. 'I hope young students realize there's a lot in Erie to do. And they just have to get out there.' She suggested students, go do the job shadows your school offers. Do a co-op. Talk to different professionals or your neighbors and learn what's out there. I think people miss there are great careers in Erie that you can have for your life.

A thrilling restaurant renaissance is unfolding in this Bay Area suburb

Fremont is a sleeping giant in the Bay Area's restaurant landscape. It has long quietly impressed locals with gloriously dimpled Afghani bread, explosively flavorful Indian snacks and funky tea leaf salads. But lately, a surge of new openings have roused the colossus from its slumber — and should bring the city's dining scene more recognition at last. From scorched paneer cooked over live flame to masterful, freshly made noodles, these newcomers deliver on specific expertise and ambition. Located at the southern tip of Alameda County, Fremont is home to oversized boulevards, high incomes (a median of $170,000, according to census data), the Tesla factory and a diverse populace. More than 60% identify as Asian, including a large Afghan community and a growing South Asian population. Those demographics are reflected in the city's restaurants. The 2010s brought regional Indian food. In 2015, Din Ding Dumpling House debuted as the city's first handmade noodle and dumpling spot, according to co-owner Scott Zhang. Three years later, Varun Sapra launched his exceptional Delhi-inspired barbecue truck Keeku Da Dhaba. 'When I started, there was only one more truck, selling momos,' he said. Today there are more trucks than ever, dispensing late-night dosas, halal burgers and chaat. Many were born during the pandemic. But it wasn't until last year that the proverbial volcano began to erupt. Din Ding Dumpling House opened in a new location last August; a fire shut down its original spot in 2021. While the restaurant's extended menu has hits like dry-fried pork chops, nearly every table in the building, as if mandatory, has steamer baskets of xiao long bao. With sturdy yet delicately supple skins, the soup dumplings here make international phenom Din Tai Fung look like a journeyman. Each sip of the broth reverberates through noggin's pleasure receptors, striking a lovely balance of richness and subtlety. These dumplings are unequaled. A few steps away from the dumpling savant, Shugetsu opened last month. It's the latest expansion of Japan-born specialist for tsukemen, a Tokyo-style dipping ramen where the noodles and soup are in divorce court. In my view, the San Mateo location has made the region's finest bowl of tsukemen — even better than the much-hyped Tsujita Artisan Noodle — and I'm happy to say the Fremont restaurant is just as great. What sets it apart is the resonant smokiness of the porky, concentrated broth. The thick, springy noodles almost feel alive under the chompers. After six years of operating out of parking lots, Keeku Da Dhaba opened as a full-blown restaurant this summer. Owner Varun Sapra's secret weapon is a tangy, spiced butter and cream sauce, used to bathe expertly charred chicken thighs or blocks of paneer in decadence. On a recent visit, the restaurant was filled with fans of the truck eating sandwiches known as kathi rolls under the glow of an 'I <3 Delhi' sign. All it took was one bite of the smoky bundle for me to adopt the mantra as my own. 'People are looking for the exact same taste, the taste of India,' Sapra said. Like Keeku, Anantara was also bred out of a desire for something new — but something a little fancier. Founder Saran Gajendran was inspired by the success of predecessors like San Francisco Top 100 restaurant Copra, which kicked open the door for South Indian fine dining. However, Anantara's advantage is its location in a thriving Desi hub; Fremont's Indian population has grown from 23% in 2000 to 30% in 2020, according to census data. Gajendran saw Fremont as 'perfect soil' for his restaurant, citing South Asian residents' growing appetite for luxury dining. The buzz and cheer of the place is contagious, surrounded by tropical wallpaper and faux plants. Anantara excels at small plates: fried soft shell crab over a creamy green chutney, a red-tinted fillet of tender fish and lamb chops in a thick, spicy gravy. The sleeper hit is the Kerala-inspired egg roast, a thick mash of caramelized onions studded with boiled eggs and paired with a lightly crisp dome-like bread known as egg appam. 'Fremont is evolving in real time,' Gajendran said. 'And you can feel it.' Din Ding Dumpling House. 11-2:30 p.m., 5-9 p.m. Sunday-Monday and Wednesday-Thursday, 11-2:30 p.m., 5-9 p.m. Friday-Saturday. 3768 J Capitol Ave., Fremont. Keeku Da Dhaba. 5-10 p.m. Wednesday-Thursday and Sunday, 5-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday. 39935 Mission Blvd, Fremont.

Fresh Del Monte and CMA CGM shift to containerized produce to improve quality

Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc. and the CMA CGM Group have unveiled a strategic shift in the transport of bananas and pineapples from the Philippines to Northeast Asia by adopting containerized shipping, a move intended to enhance cold‐chain logistics and raise quality standards for perishable exports. The partnership marks a departure from traditional breakbulk methods that have typically been used in these routes. Under the new arrangement, the two companies are deploying full refrigerated containers on two key shipping corridors. The JP8 route now delivers produce directly from Davao to Japan's major ports, Tokyo, Yokohama, Kobe, and Moji, while the BMX service provides a stable weekly connection to Busan in South Korea. These routes are operated through CNC, CMA CGM's intra‑Asia short sea specialist. Historically, bananas and pineapples destined for Japan and Korea were loaded and unloaded multiple times aboard breakbulk vessels, exposing them to temperature fluctuations and handling stress. This method has been associated with increased spoilage rates and inconsistent fruit quality. The new containerized model places produce inside climate‑controlled units that function as mobile cold‑rooms throughout transit, minimizing handling, sustaining consistent temperatures, and reducing waste. Raul Saca, Senior Vice‑President of Global Logistics at Fresh Del Monte, said in a news release, 'Customer satisfaction starts long before the fruit reaches the shelf—it begins with how we move it. By transitioning to dedicated container vessels, we're not only improving cold chain reliability and minimizing damage but also creating a more agile, scalable logistics model that better serves our retail partners across Asia.' Incorporated into the new shipping system are CMA CGM's CLIMACTIVE controlled‑atmosphere containers and smart container technologies. These systems slow down ripening, preserve nutritional content, and enable real‑time monitoring of conditions during transit, offering extended visibility over the cold chain. Bo Wegener, Chief Executive Officer of CMA CGM Asia Pacific, added that the collaboration reflects both firms' shared, 'This partnership with Fresh Del Monte reflects our shared commitment to innovation, sustainability, and customer satisfaction. In addition to benefits from containerization, CMA CGM's expertise in fruits and fresh produce logistics offers improved solutions that add value to both producers and consumers.' Beyond quality improvements, the containerized approach delivers environmental advantages. Its greater operational efficiency lowers carbon emissions by minimizing unnecessary handling and streamlining logistics. CMA CGM has pledged to reach net‑zero carbon by 2050, while Fresh Del Monte is committed to science‑based emissions reduction targets. Centene Stock: Is Wall Street Bullish or Bearish?

Centene Corporation (CNC), headquartered in Saint Louis, Missouri, operates as a healthcare enterprise that provides programs and services to under-insured and uninsured families, and commercial organizations. Valued at $12.7 billion by market cap, the company's specialty services include Medicaid and medicare health plans, treatment compliance, and nurse triage. Shares of this largest Medicaid managed care organization have significantly underperformed the broader market over the past year. CNC has declined 66.6% over this time frame, while the broader S&P 500 Index ($SPX) has rallied nearly 21.5%. In 2025, CNC stock is down 57.3%, compared to the SPX's 7.1% gains on a YTD basis. Narrowing the focus, CNC's underperformance is also apparent compared to the iShares U.S. Healthcare Providers ETF (IHF). The exchange-traded fund has dropped about 24.3% over the past year. Moreover, ETF's 13.2% losses on a YTD basis outshine the stock's dip over the same time frame. Centene's underperformance was due to increased healthcare utilization and medical cost pressures, resulting in the company's first quarterly loss in over a decade. The health benefits ratio spiked to 93%, the highest in years, and revenues were impacted by a shortfall in anticipated risk adjustment transfer payments. Centene also faced higher-than-expected utilization rates in its Medicaid and Medicare Advantage lines of business, leading to a decrease in membership and weak quarterly earnings. On Jul. 25, CNC shares closed up more than 6% after reporting its Q2 results. Its adjusted losses of $0.16 per share did not meet Wall Street's expectations of EPS of $0.68. The company's revenue was $48.7 billion, surpassing Wall Street forecasts of $43.9 billion. For the current fiscal year, ending in December, analysts expect CNC's EPS to decline 77.3% to $1.63 on a diluted basis. The company's earnings surprise history is mixed. It beat the consensus estimate in three of the last four quarters while missing the forecast on another occasion. Among the 18 analysts covering CNC stock, the consensus is a 'Hold.' That's based on three 'Strong Buy' ratings, 14 'Holds,' and one 'Moderate Sell.' This configuration is less bullish than a month ago, with an overall rating of 'Moderate Buy,' consisting of six analysts suggesting a 'Strong Buy,' and one recommending a 'Moderate Buy.' On Aug. 4, Morgan Stanley (MS) analyst Erin Wright kept an 'Equal Weight' rating on CNC and lowered the price target to $28, implying a potential upside of 8.1% from current levels. The mean price target of $36.25 represents a 38.8% premium to CNC's current price levels. The Street-high price target of $80 suggests an ambitious upside potential of 209%.
