Sen. Bernie Sanders to bring tour to Pa. criticizing Trump's policies

U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) campaigns for Vice President Kamala Harris at Erie High School in Erie, Pa. Oct. 26, 2024 (Capital-Star photo) U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders will be making a three-day swing through Pennsylvania starting on Thursday as he continues his nationwide tour speaking out against President Donald Trump. On Thursday afternoon, Sanders will join the Philadelphia AFL-CIO at City Hall for the group's May Day 2025 rally. 'Join labor, immigrant, and community organizations united, with special guest Senator Bernie Sanders, to say invest in people, not the billionaires,' the Philadelphia AFL-CIO writes in an online sign-up sheet for the event. 'We are united and rising up for a world that works for all of us, not just Elon Musk and his cronies.' The rally in Philadelphia, which is scheduled to kickoff at 4 p.m., will be followed by a march. On Friday afternoon, Sanders will take his 'Fighting Oligarchy' tour to Harrisburg at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex. The following day, he will lead another rally at Lehigh University in Bethlehem. U.S. Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-17th District), who represents a district in western Pennsylvania, will join Sanders at the rallies on Friday and Saturday. Musical performances are also scheduled before both events. In February, Sanders began this tour with a gathering in Nebraska and has since visited several states across the country. He has been promoting the events as, 'hitting the road to have real discussions across America on how we move forward to take on the Oligarchs and corporate interests who have so much power and influence in this country.' U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has been present at several events with Sanders, although she is not scheduled to participate in any of the Pennsylvania stops this week. Sanders visit to the Keystone States comes as President Trump wrapped up the 100th day of his second term in the Oval Office. Trump won Pennsylvania's 19 electoral votes over Democratic candidate Vice President Kamala Harris in last year's presidential election. Although Sanders will be in the Democratic stronghold of Philadelphia on Thursday, his visit to Harrisburg and Bethlehem are both in congressional districts represented by U.S. Reps. Ryan Mackenzie and Scott Perry, both Republicans. According to the Cook Political Report, a national ratings outlet, both Mackenzie and Perry are currently the only races in Pennsylvania in 2026 they describe as a 'toss up.'

LGL: Foundation for Erie's Public Schools

This week's Loving Giving Local donation takes us to Erie High School as we learn more about the Foundation for Erie's Public Schools. The Loving Giving Local crew made a stop at Erie High School this week to learn more about the Foundation for Erie's Public Schools. The foundation has been around for over 10 years, aimed at building the capacity of the school district to do fundraising for the schools and support their mission. Every year they work to raise money for the school district and support the boosters and organizations for the sports teams and clubs. 'We help out with fundraising we run a couple of large fundraising events every year and we kind of have systems that give back to the district as well,' said Rick Schneider of the Foundation for Erie's Public Schools. He said they do all types of work but it's all in continuing and fulfilling the mission of providing the best possible educational support for the kids in the district that they can. One of their major projects this year is their classroom mini-grant that goes out to teachers all across the district. 'They support the work that the teachers are doing in their classrooms, lots of different things have been funded over the years. We have funded experience for students outside of school. And for teachers that bring families to the school doing cooking exhibitions with students and funded a lot of classroom enhancement things that teachers are working on,' Schneider said. He said the $250 from Auto Express will in part help fund one of those classroom mini-grants for one of their teachers. This includes things that might be outside the ordinary for instance, a quite comfortable reading area in a classroom. 'You know anytime we can bring Loving Giving Local to a school foundation, we know that that donation that we bring stays right in the school district, right in the community. And to learn today that our donation is going to go towards a mini-grant is going to benefit a teacher and ultimately benefit the students that they teach, that is what Loving Giving Local is all about. It's all about the community and this foundation does a great job with it,' said Joe Askins of Auto Express Resale Center. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Preparing the next generation of skilled workers — That's the role of Erie High School's Career and Technical program. Two senior Erie High students are currently working co-op at a Harborcreek company. Port Erie Plastics offers high-quality plastic fabrication services. They manufacture a variety of products from storage units for the food industry, to temporary flooring, and water pipes for home and commercial buildings. With over 400 employees, Port Erie currently provides on-the-job training to Erie High career tech machining students. 'We have two students who come here every week to work with our experienced toolmakers and hopefully be the next generation coming in and taking over for that team,' according to Heather Evans, Human Resource manager. One of them is Daniel Miller, working at Port Erie during his senior year, continuing a family tradition. He said, 'My dad's a machinist. He's been all over the place in Erie. It always inspired me. He'd always come home and tell me stories.' Miller added, 'So, I got like, I wanted to do it so when I went to Erie High I figured I could do machining trade, so then I chose it, and it led me here.' Another Erie High student at Port Erie is a guy everyone calls Knobby. Nawid Ullahqudiri is Afghan and came to Erie a few years ago. He appreciates his Erie High machine training and the opportunity to operate machines at Port Erie. He likes the work and says it's interesting and fun! Jason Campbell graduated from Erie High five years ago and is progressing in his manufacturing career. He's currently an apprentice in the tool and die program. He said, ' I came from being an operator for CNC. Pays decent. But then once you get advanced you start like, tool and die making, I'm doing an apprentice right now, and they make a lot of money.' Working co-op is a win-win for students and the company. Evans says there's lots of opportunity in this industry. 'I hope young students realize there's a lot in Erie to do. And they just have to get out there.' She suggested students, go do the job shadows your school offers. Do a co-op. Talk to different professionals or your neighbors and learn what's out there. I think people miss there are great careers in Erie that you can have for your life. To learn more about the opportunities at Port Erie Plastics, go here.
