No, the Centre has no plans to impose a toll tax on two-wheelers, clarified Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on Thursday.
This comes after some media reports reported that the government was planning to levy user fees on two-wheelers.
In a strong-worded tweet in Hindi, Gadkari condemned media houses for 'spreading misleading news' without verifying facts and said it is 'not a sign of healthy journalism'.
'The exemption on toll for two-wheeler vehicles will continue fully,' he said.
'Some media houses are spreading misleading news about imposing toll tax on two-wheeler vehicles. No such decision has been proposed,' Gakdari's tweet read.
'Spreading misleading news without verifying the truth to create a sensation is not a sign of healthy journalism. I condemn this,' it added.
In a fact-check post, the NHAI also said that it was fake news and no such proposal was under consideration.
'Some sections of the media have reported that the Government of India plans to levy user fees on two-wheelers. NHAI would like to clarify that no such proposal is under consideration. There are no plans to introduce toll charges for two-wheelers,' NHAI said in a tweet, alongside the hashtag fake news.
Meanwhile, the government is set to introduce a FASTag-based Annual Pass, which will provide a 'big relief' to commuters as it will reduce the financial burden and ease travel with no need to stop at toll plazas.
The annual pass scheme that will allow commuters to cross 200 toll plazas on National Highways for just ₹ 3,000 annually--down from the earlier average of ₹ 10,000. The scheme will come into effect from August 15.

He alleged that the government's focus has been more on image-building than real impact. In an interview with ANI, Kishor said, 'They claim toilets have been built everywhere. These are just lies. No one in this country has matched Modi ji when it comes to theatrics and lying. He promised to bring back black money and deposit Rs 15 lakh in everyone's account. He promised two crore jobs every year. Where are they?' He said that despite PM Modi being in power at the Centre for 11 years, Bihar continues to suffer from poverty, hunger, and helplessness. He pointed out that no major industries have been established in the state, forcing young people to migrate in search of work. 'We still face hunger, poverty, and helplessness. We ask this government--after being in power for twenty years in the state and eleven years at the Centre--can you name even one domain where Bihar ranks number one nationally?' he questioned. He also alleged that the government's claims are based on manipulated data, particularly in areas such as toilet construction and educational reforms. 'All they do is list claims based on manipulated data. They say the condition has improved--more schools, more teachers. But the real question is: where are the teachers?' he said. Kishor further criticised PM Modi for failing to reopen sugar mills in Bihar or fulfil his promise of granting the state special status and a special package. 'He comes and talks about drinking tea made from sugar produced in mills he claimed he would restart. It's been eleven years--when will those sugar mills reopen? When will we get that sugar to make tea? He promised a special package and special status for Bihar. Where are they?' Kishor questioned. He also slammed Union Ministers from Bihar, accusing them of failing to bring any meaningful projects to the state. 'All it did was repackage ongoing projects without any special additions. Even the Textile Minister, Piyush Goyal, didn't allocate a mega textile park to Bihar. Bihar has several Union Ministers. What have they brought from the Centre to Bihar? In fact, an agro-research centre originally in Bihar was being shifted to Karnataka under Shivraj Singh Chauhan when he was the Agriculture Minister. It was only halted after public uproar,' Kishor said. He alleged that democratic institutions and the media have been 'hijacked' under the Modi government. 'Modi ji wins elections in the country because of propaganda. All democratic institutions in the country have been hijacked over the last eleven years. The media have been hijacked. We must say this openly... TV is flooded with Modi's coverage every day, but the media only questions the Opposition...' he said. 'Why has he stopped holding press conferences? Why is there no accountability? Earlier, the media used to question the ruling party. Now, they only push their propaganda and put the Opposition in the dock,' he added. During a robust one-day engagement in Sribhumi, Khadse chaired a review meeting with officials from 26 departments. She underlined youth and sports as key drivers of social upliftment and assured enhanced support for sports infrastructure and youth-centric initiatives. Fresh from inspections in Unakoti and a surprise visit to Agartala's Sports Authority of India (SAI) Sports Training Centre earlier this week, Khadse's Sribhumi visit brought into sharp focus the district's recent strides, as per a ministry press release. Food security is equally robust: nearly 97.9 per cent of allotted NFSA rice has reached more than one million beneficiaries. In health, 33,662 expectant mothers registered for antenatal care in 2024-25, with over 94 percent enrolling in their first trimester; departments are now tackling rising hypertension and anemia cases. On agriculture, Sribhumi notched a 103 percent saturation under PM-KISAN and surpassed 126 percent enrolment for Sali paddy insurance under PMFBY. Delhi-Mumbai Expressway gets driver-friendly touch: 'Wayside amenities' stations ensure safety, comfort for long-haul truckers
Dausa (Rajasthan) [India], June 26 (ANI): The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, counted among the most ambitious and eco-sensitive infrastructure projects by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, is steadily becoming a model for world-class and commuter-friendly expressways. Recognising the essential contribution and challenges faced by long-distance truck drivers, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a unique and much-needed initiative, driver-centric Wayside Amenity Stations. So far, nearly 21 such stations have been built on the expressway, with four already operational. These stations aim to provide not just rest, but a sense of comfort and security to drivers who clock 12 to 14 hours daily, often navigating the highways through the night. One such operational facility near Dausa in Rajasthan, developed by NHAI and managed by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), has been aptly named 'Apna Ghar'. True to its name, the station offers a home-like environment to drivers with amenities such as truck parking, CCTV-monitored premises, clean restrooms, bathing areas, self-cooking kitchens, a Dhaba, and free Wi-Fi, all available for just Rs 112 (including GST). On asked how these facilities are being booked and managed, Radha Mohan, Business Manager at IOCL, told ANI, ' Earlier we had 'Swagat' outlets on highways that offered basic facilities like restrooms and food. Now, we have upgraded versions of those. We're offering air conditioning, water coolers, washing machines, clean open bathing areas, clean restrooms, TVs, free Wi-Fi, and CCTV surveillance across the parking area with live monitoring at our station.' 'If a driver doesn't want to cook, we also offer affordable meals. For under Rs 130, a complete meal is available at our dhaba. Any truck driver can come here and rest. We know that they travel long distances and suffer fatigue, which increases the risk of accidents. So the concept was to provide such facilities on highways where they can rest and refresh themselves safely.' On booking facilities, Radha Mohan added: 'Currently, we have 35 beds available here and the charges are Rs 112 including GST. Drivers can make bookings using the 'Apna Ghar' app. If someone is unaware of the app, our petrol pump staff are trained to assist. Our managers stationed here also help drivers with the booking process. Once the app is downloaded and used, drivers have no issues making future bookings. On average, about 50-60 per cent of the beds are booked daily, meaning that a significant number of drivers are already using this facility every day.' In addition to essential facilities, these wayside amenity stations are also equipped with a range of convenient services to enhance the overall travel experience. These include fuel pumps for quick refuelling, restaurants and dhabas offering wholesome thalis and quick snacks, and EV charging stations to support electric vehicles. There are dedicated parking bays for buses and trucks, motels for longer stays, and play areas for children. By integrating such comprehensive services under one roof, NHAI's initiative marks a significant step toward safer highways, reduced fatigue-related accidents, and enhanced dignity for India's unsung highway warriors, the truck drivers.
