Morocco, Czechia Partner to Deploy Water-from-Air Technology in Kingdom

Maroc02-07-2025
Morocco and the Czech Republic formalized a strategic agreement to support the deployment of atmospheric water generation (AWG) technology in the Kingdom on Tuesday in Rabat.
The agreement was signed by the Moroccan Institute for Research in Solar Energy and New Energies (IRESEN) and the Embassy of the Czech Republic to Morocco, acting on behalf of the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic through its CzechAid development cooperation program, according to a press release from IRESEN.
It includes the delivery and implementation of two pilot units by the Czech company CZECHOSLOVAK EXPORT a.s., the export agency and prime integrator of one of Europe's leading industrial holdings Czechoslovak Group (CSG), selected as the executing partner of the project.
The initiative marks a concrete milestone in Moroccan–Czech bilateral cooperation and reflects a shared commitment to addressing climate-related challenges through sustainable technological innovation, says the same source.
Under the title "Water from Air Equipment for Morocco," the project will deploy a low carbon atmospheric water generation (AWG) system designed to produce potable water directly from humidity in the air, offering a modular, decentralized, clean and resilient solution to water scarcity.
The system selected for the project is the patent-protected and award-winning Emergency Water from Air (EWA) portable solution developed by the University Center for Energy Efficient Buildings (UCEEB) of the Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) and produced by the Czech manufacturer KARBOX s.r.o., also a CSG member firm.
The agreement is financed through a grant provided by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs via CzechAid. It aims to deliver two pilot demonstrators to be tested under Morocco's climatic conditions in order to assess its potential for broader deployment in remote and arid zones, in the country and the region.
This initiative directly contributes to the growing convergence between water security, innovative energy solutions, and both climate mitigation and adaptation, a nexus that lies at the heart of Morocco's strategic priorities as outlined in its New Development Model.
By integrating cutting-edge atmospheric water generation into Morocco's energy, industrial, and research ecosystems, the project serves as a pilot for future solutions that are not only technologically autonomous, but also environmentally resilient and socially inclusive.
In fact, large-scale deployment of such solutions may offer alternative opportunities to develop sustainable economic activities, such as agriculture, services, and industry, in remote areas with no access to seawater desalination. This, in turn, can strengthen resilience and reinforce strategic sovereignty across the African region.
In addition to its operational objectives, the project opens avenues for technology transfer, capacity building, and scientific collaboration between Moroccan and Czech public and private institutions. It also reflects the potential for future local industrial integration of clean technologies within Morocco's green industrial ecosystem.
IRESEN Director General Samir Rachidi said that this partnership embodies a shared vision between Morocco and the Czech Republic to make science and innovation true levers for inclusive and sustainable development for our respective citizens.
For his part, Ladislav Škeřík, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the Kingdom of Morocco expressed his pride in "supporting this high-impact project, which brings together Czech innovation and Moroccan expertise in a way that directly serves the people and the planet."
The installation of the pilot units is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025, followed by a two-year phase of technical evaluation, data analysis, and market exploration.

Moroccan AI Engineer Ibtihal Aboussad Urges Muslims to Lead AI Revolution

Rabat – Moroccan engineer and AI expert Ibtihal Aboussad has called on Muslim communities to stop sitting on the sidelines and start leading in the world of artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking last week at the Muslim Council of Britain, she said that Muslims have a duty to understand and shape new technologies, especially as AI becomes more powerful and more present in daily life. 'AI is everywhere, so we cannot sit this one out,' she said. 'When social media exploded in the early 2010s, most Muslims and Muslim institutions were not ready,' Aboussad added, explaining that social media platforms began shaping how Muslim youth think. She added that humans began using AI in dangerous ways, giving the example of the Israeli Occupation Forces' genocidal war against Palestinians. 'And in Palestine, we're witnessing the most disturbing use of tech in modern warfare,' she said. 'So what is our response? Are we building the tools that protect them? Are we training our youth and our communities to understand these models? Are we developing alternatives to serve justice instead of oppression? Or are we sitting back and hoping that someone else will handle the technical details?' she questioned. The Moroccan engineer warned that ignoring AI could allow others to build systems that go against Muslim values, and that every delay means losing more ground. It's still possible to do things differently in the AI revolution Aboussad told the audience that Muslims are entrusted with truth and justice, and that this responsibility also applies to science and technology. She recalled that the Prophet told Muslims to change wrong with their hands. She also stressed that it's not too late. 'The great news is we are still early enough in this shift to do things differently. And we cannot let anyone tell us that tech is tech and business is business. We cannot let anyone convince us that technical work is morally neutral,' Aboussad explained. The young engineer, who studied at Harvard University and worked at Microsoft, has become known for speaking out about the ethical dangers of AI. Earlier this year, she made headlines when she interrupted a presentation by Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman, accusing the company of being complicit in Israel's genocide against Palestinians. Bank Al-Maghrib Posts 27% Rise in 2024 Profit, Reaching MAD 6.46 Billion

Rabat – Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), Morocco's central bank, ended the 2024 financial year with a net profit of MAD 6.46 billion, marking a 27% increase compared to 2023. According to the bank's annual report, the profit rose from MAD 5.1 billion in 2023 to MAD 6.46 billion in 2024. This growth came despite higher operating costs and was driven by solid performance in several key areas, says the central bank. One of the main contributors to this result was the management of Morocco's foreign exchange reserves, the report argued. Income from this activity reached MAD 8.74 billion, up by 17%. The increase was mainly driven by better returns on foreign currency assets, especially bonds. The central bank also saw a 27% jump in profits from its monetary policy operations, which totalled MAD 3.95 billion. This was linked to higher levels of monetary interventions as Moroccan banks faced more liquidity shortages, even though the bank had lowered its key interest rate to 2.5% in 2024. Meanwhile, other operational activities remained stable, bringing in MAD 1.27 billion. Although income from commissions on foreign exchange and Treasury bills dropped, this was balanced by higher sales of secure documents, such as official papers and identification materials. On the cost side, general operating expenses rose by 22% to MAD 2.54 billion. This increase was due to rising day-to-day running costs and higher depreciation provisions. Despite the increase in expenses, Bank Al-Maghrib's gross operating profit rose by 17% to MAD 11.42 billion, showing improved efficiency and overall profitability in its core activities. The bank also reported a smaller non-recurring loss. It dropped from MAD 997 million in 2023 to MAD 447 million in 2024, largely due to the settlement of the social solidarity contribution owed from the previous year. Tags: BAMBank Al-Maghribprofit

Under HM the King's Leadership, Morocco Stands out as Emerging Power in Africa

The Kingdom of Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, stands out as an 'emerging power' in Africa, thanks to outstanding performance and forward-looking choices, African Development Bank (AfDB) President Akinwumi Adesina said. In a statement to MAP, Adesina emphasized that Morocco, which is undergoing a strong transformative momentum as highlighted in the speech delivered by His Majesty the King on the occasion of the Throne Day, stands out for the consistency and coherence of its economic and social progress. Morocco's strategic positioning, he said, is rooted in a clear and ambitious vision supported by an integrated development strategy, economic, social, and environmental, grounded in stable governance and carefully considered policy choices. This methodical and determined approach, he added, has enabled the Kingdom to emerge as one of the most advanced nations on the African continent. 'As part of its New Development Model, the Kingdom has strengthened its economic fundamentals,' Adesina said, pointing to genuine sectoral diversification, a well-managed openness to global markets, and firm integration into regional and global value chains as signs of Morocco's economic emergence. The country's industrial revival, particularly in the automotive, aerospace, and renewable energy sectors, reflects this upward trajectory, bolstered by an ambitious infrastructure policy and solid macroeconomic environment, which enhance Morocco's appeal to international investors, he noted. 'Driven by the major development projects launched by His Majesty the King, our relations with the Kingdom continue to grow stronger, in order to support and accompany these multi-faceted advances for the benefit of the country and the Moroccan people,' Adesina concluded.
