Unbothered Unc Denzel Washington ‘Doesn't Care' About Being Canceled, The Oscars, Or What Anyone Thinks Of Him

Source: Gilbert Flores / Getty Denzel Washington has been firmly in his unc era for some years, and on his latest press run for Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest remake, he continues to prove why he's one of the funniest interview subjects around. When discussing his performance, which has already started bringing in rave reviews, and what it could mean for awards season, the two-time Academy Award winner said he couldn't be bothered to care about accolades at this point in his life. 'I don't do it for Oscars. I don't care about that kind of stuff,' Washington said to Complex . 'I've been at this a long time, and there's time when I won and shouldn't have won and then didn't win and should've won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward. I'm not that interested in Oscars. People ask me, 'Where do I keep it?' Well, next to the other one. I'm not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, [Oscars] aren't going to do me a bit of good.' Washington also made it clear that he doesn't give a hootennay about being canceled, nor will he be playing the social media game at his age. In an interview with Complex , he let it be known that he never signed up for all the fanfare. 'What made public support so important to begin with?' he said. 'I don't care who's following who. You can't lead and follow at the same time, and you can't follow and lead at the same time. I don't follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I don't follow man. I have faith in God. I have hope in man, but look around, it ain't working out so well.' He continued, 'You can't be canceled if you haven't signed up. Don't sign up. Don't get me started. You know, chest is getting tight talking about it.' Washington has become a viral meme waiting to happen during every press run these days as he also delivered some much remembered one-liners during his media tour for Gladiator II , including when he dropped the news that he'd be appearing in Black Panther 3. The 'Malcolm X' actor and his director bestie, Lee, have been going unc for unc while promoting their latest collaboration, and they've also brought Rihanna's baby daddy A$AP Rocky along for the ride. As BOSSIP previously reported, the Harlem rapper absolutely loved his time working with both of the legends and was shocked to find that Washington knew more about current rap artists than he originally thought. 'Yo, Denzel plays more Memphis rap than anybody I know. He's just like, 'Alright, so what you f*** with, kid?' [I'm like,] 'Pardon me?' I tried to sound all old school and s*** like, 'I like Slick Rick…' and he's like, 'Oh, I f*** with Rick, of course. Rick the Ruler.' Then, he started saying Nas lyrics out of nowhere,' he said. 'Then Pac, then DMX, and then he starts talking about the young cats — Moneybagg Yo, NLE Choppa, NBA YoungBoy and these guys. I'm like, 'What is this man doing?!' But I'm here for it, like I f*** with it. I was shocked. He's an OG. You would expect him to listen to Miles Davis all day. Nah, he said, 'Throw on NLE Choppa,' [then Washington rapped] 'I don't do drive-bys no more, I walk 'em down.' That's verbatim.' This trio seems like a good time! Jeff Ross brings the funny to Broadway with ‘Take a Banana for the Ride'

Roastmaster heats up B'way Despite Broadway's aging retreads comes the Nederlander Theatre's newie 'Take a Banana for the Ride.' Co-producer Marc Cornstein took me to see it. Just opened and every seat had a behind in it. No gigantic cast. Just one dude — written and performed by comedian Jeff Ross. Lasts 75ish minutes — just enough to lead the conga line to the ladies' room. Funny, a pro, Ross knows how to throw a joke. He wore a custom suit. Bright yellow. Not what you'd probably find in Putin's closet. Trotting up and down the stage like a caged lion, his props are framed wall paintings to whom he talks — and who talk back. Advertisement If you're a foreigner — or worse, an out-of-towner like from Jersey — and maybe don't know him, Jeff started writing this show 30 years ago, hadn't the gizzard to go forward with it 'but events in my life gave me the push to bring it back.' He's good. I was married to a comedian for centuries, so I can finish a joke before it leaves someone's throat. He says, 'If you like your comedy watered down, now's your chance to sneak out and give your ticket to a homeless person who needs air conditioning.' I saw the show before it opened. Marc Cornstein's father is USA's former ambassador to Hungary, and my longtime friend, David Cornstein. Advertisement Go. You'll love it. If you pay for the ticket, I'll go again. Professional perk I just heard an old story. In high-school, Sandra Bullock was voted 'Most Likely to Brighten Up Your Day.' She then discovered she's allergic to horses. Disadvantage. Why? She was up for the lead in 1999's 'Runaway Bride' but one key scene required her to flee a wedding on horseback. They used Julia Roberts instead and the thing turned out to be a smash. Also, Sandra, as a kid, got her nose broken when her younger sister, Gesine, opened a garage door quickly and smacked her in the face with it. Maybe this is to show how we all overcome life's difficulties. Maybe. Protection details revealed Advertisement Michael Matranga: 'We become criminal investigators through the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.' It's weeks and weeks of training. 'It's defensive tactics, both standing or on the ground. We shoot multiple weapons —pistol, shotgun, rifle. How to deploy from your vehicle, how to operate outdoors, indoors and, most difficult, how to advance. That's the bread and butter of protective work. 'Difficult working with foreign heads of state. Their customs are not same as ours.' Advertisement Additional trouble comes if there's an issue of drugs — but this we don't even mention. Stiff competition So, meanwhile, I interviewed a regular — a regular regular — at a nudist camp. It was their annual masquerade ball. Meanwhile, even though the guys wore masks, I was told that 'Somehow these gals were still able to identify them.' New York. One of the busiest cities in the world. Where something is always happening. And most of it goes unsolved. Only in New York, kids only in New York.

Trending on the Timeline: Denzel Washington Calls Out Sports Media

Source: ione nicole thomas / IONE, VIA NICOLE THOMAS Denzel Washington dropped some real talk on the state of sports media, and, as expected, he didn't hold back. The iconic actor coined the term 'opinionaires' to describe the current wave of commentators flooding sports media. According to him, too many of these so-called experts are people who have never played the game but love criticizing those who have. 'Those who can't, talk about those who can,' Denzel remarked. 'Those who haven't [played] don't know what they're talking about. Period. Come get in the gym with me; let's find out!' Now, that's the energy we didn't know we needed! But Denzel didn't stop there. He bluntly added that some people in media just need to 'shut up.' Yes, Uncle Denzel said it, and honestly, we've all been thinking it. The Oscar-winning actor has become somewhat of an OG voice lately, keeping it real on everything from Hollywood to headlines, and now, the world of sports. Fans are here for Denzel's unfiltered opinions, with many hoping he'll start a podcast to share even more of his wisdom. Could you imagine a weekly mic drop from Uncle D? The streets would be talking. Until that happens, though, Denzel remains a voice of reason we can count on to call it as he sees it.
