Northeastern states should effectively utilise hydro-power potential: Manohar Lal
New Delhi: The northeastern states should work towards ensuring energy security and given the hydro-power potential, including pumped-storage in the region, they should make efforts to effectively utilise that potential, Union Power Minister Manohar Lal said on Saturday.
In his address at the 'Regional Conference of the Power Sector' in Gangtok. Sikkim, the minister underlined the importance of a future-ready, modern and financially viable power sector to fuel the country's growth on its journey towards becoming a developed nation, according to a Ministry of Power statement.
He emphasised the importance of power in achieving the goal of 'Viksit Bharat,' adding that the regional conference would help in identifying specific challenges and solutions in respect of power sector of the northeastern states.
The minister mentioned that despite the minor gap of 0.1 per cent in meeting current power requirements, efforts must continue to meet future demands.
Since 2014, power generation has increased significantly, and various modes of generation, including thermal, hydro, atomic, and renewable energy, must be advanced, he added.
Addressing environmental concerns and moving towards non-fossil power is essential for achieving the target of Net Zero Emissions, according to Manohar Lal.
He mentioned that through government schemes like RDSS and PM-JANMAN, difficulties in the distribution sector are being addressed, and left-out households are being electrified.
The minister highlighted that the distribution sector faces challenges due to poor tariff structures, suboptimal billing and collection, and delayed payments of government department dues and subsidies.
'It is essential to reduce the AT&C losses and the gap between Average Cost of Supply and Average Revenue Realised, to ensure that the distribution sector becomes viable. To achieve that, it is essential that the tariffs are cost-reflective,' Manohar Lal stated.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay highlighted the key steps taken by the state towards improving the quality and reliability of power supply. He also highlighted the proposed plan for further improving the power sector, requesting for interventions from the Central government on various issues concerning the state.

'Go home': Local's response to pro-Khalistan parade in Canada goes viral
As the Khalistan movement continues in Canada, a video of a parade of Khalistan supporters in Vancouver made went viral on social media. In the video, posted by Canada-based investigative journalist Mocha Bezirgan, a local Canadian man was heard responding to the parade by stating 'no one cares.' This video comes after Bezirgan alleged that he was 'surrounded and threatened' by a group of Khalistan supporters, who also snatched his phone, while he filmed filming their weekend rally in downtown Vancouver. Along with Khalistan flags, a Pakistani flag was also spotted during the rally. In response to the rally, the local man was heard saying 'go home, no one cares.' The supporters in the video can also be seen carrying an effigy of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while chanting - 'Who killed Canadian citizens? Indian government.' In May 2025, India lodged strong protest with the Canadian High Commission after an anti-India parade was held in Toronto. During this parade, effigies of PM Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar were paraded. During these Khalsa day celebrations, Khalistan supporters also carried out floats with pro-Khalistan propaganda, pro-Pakistan banners and imagery targeting Indian leaders. The parade was condemned by several Indo-Canadian groups as well. In 2024, a float symbolising the assassination of Indira Gandhi was also carried out by Khalistan supporters. This parade was met with condemnation from the Canadian High Commissioner Cameron McKay. Due to the Khalistan movement in Canada, ties between India and Ottawa have also hit a snag. Last year, the rise in anti-India activities due to the killing of Khalistani extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, prompted India and Canada to carry out a tit-for-tat expulsion of diplomats. Tensions between India and Canada increased after the killing of Nijjar, as Khalistani supporters alleged the involvement of the Indian government. This allegation was then highlighted at a global stage after former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of carrying out covert operations on Canadian soil, including the killing of Nijjar. The Indian government has denied any involvement and called on Canada to share the 'evidence and credible allegations' they had against New Delhi.

Devendra Fadnavis inaugurates new administrative building of MEDA in Pune
Maharasthra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the new administrative building of Maharashtra Energy Development Agency (MEDA) in city's Aundh area, on Sunday. After inaugurating the newly constructed building, Devendra Fadnavis praised MEDA for its outstanding contributions to the renewable energy sector and told the mediapersons that Maharashtra is now the leading state in the country in solar energy generation, especially through distributed power models. He described the new MEDA complex as a prime example of 'green building' and expressed confidence that it will break new grounds in taking forward the state's pledge and thrust towards clean and green energy. The Chief Minister, taking to X, also shared video of the complex inauguration and wrote, 'Based on eco-friendly (green building), Super E.C.B.C. and Net Zero concept, it reflects the commitment to clean energy and decarbonisation, meeting every green building benchmark.' Fadnavis could also be seen in the video, inspecting the complex, unveiling MEDA's green energy achievements and milestones while also getting briefed by officials about its future goals. The Chief Minister further shed light on his government's goals of 'solarizing' all government offices in the state and also draw up an ambitious project for greater adoption of PM Surya Ghar Yojana by the residents. He also shared, 'Under the PM-KUSUM scheme, we have installed 5 lakh solar pumps—more than the combined 4 lakh installed in the rest of the country. Maharashtra have set an ambitious target: to meet 100% of agriculture power demand through solar energy by December 2026, bringing significant cost savings.' Fadnavis further voiced confidence that Maharashtra will take lead in achieving the national goal of 50% electricity from renewable sources by 2030, as outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and said that his government is committed towards this objective.
