LABUAN: The gatherings in various parts of Sabah and elsewhere since Friday that attracted thousands would not have been necessary had Sabah police done a proper job in the initial investigations into the 13-year-old's death three weeks ago. Kelab Wanita Sejahtera (Labuan Women Well-being Club) President Hjh Niswwati Tarji which organised the one on the island, Sunday, which drew 3,000 people, said:

She said many felt had the police action been swift, inclusive and transparent, there would not be need for any assemblies The gathering was held at the parking lot of Medan Selera of the Sea Sports Complex. All those who turned up wore black. 'It started at 10 am and we were surprised at the turnout,' said Niswati.
Advertisement She hoped the Labuan and other gatherings would deliver the message for better surveillance of students while in the school environment and prevent any future cases of bullying or misconduct. She was confident that police would do a fair and proper investigation this time around as the Prime Minister has pledged that no one would be protected in the scrutiny. The event drew a rare display of unity as local political leaders, including from PKR and Warisan, took to the stage to deliver impassioned speeches calling for truth, justice, and an end to violence against children. Umno Supreme Council member, Mohd Rafi described the turnout as a powerful show of solidarity that transcended political and social lines. 'This is more than a political or social issue, it is a human one. We stand united in demanding justice for Zara,' he said. Zara Qairina, was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17. She had been rushed to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the dormitory of a religious school in Papar at about 3 am on July 16. Her body was exhumed last Saturday and transported to Kota Kinabalu. A post-mortem was held at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Sunday to assist ongoing police investigations into her death, which has drawn public outrage. A businessman, ST Tan, who attended the assembly said one of the greatest griefs of any parent is losing their child at a prime age without valid reason. Meanwhile, activist Haji Abdul Jalil Gani felt the 'Justice For Zara' gatherings are being used by the opposition to find fault with the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) government when it had nothing to do with what happened to the SMK Agama Tun Mustapha Kinarut student. Singling out the incomplete police investigations and the school management for what happened, he said: 'If from the on start the police investigation team had treated the case with the urgency it deserved and made prompt the findings, all the conspiracy theories of a cover-up due to a an alleged VIP link would not have arisen,' he said. 'When the Attorney General's Chambers returned the preliminary investigation report, it heightened suspicion among the public that there may indeed be a cover-up and so they took to the streets. "The opposition is trying to use it to their advantage knowing the State election is near,' he said. 'They accuse the Chief Minister of keeping quiet when Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor did tell the police to hurry up with the investigations and even sent a team to visit the family of Zara in Sipitang with financial assistance,' he said. 'Just because the Chief Minister prefers to do things without fanfare does not give the opposition and critics paint a different picture,' he said. Jalil also pointed to the Prime Minister's concern and to heed his assurance there there would be no cover up in the investigations. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? MIRI (Aug 12): A father and son from Limbang crossed state borders and endured a two-hour journey to join thousands demanding justice for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir at the Sipitang Esplanade here on Sunday. Eric Chua, 62, and his 15-year-old son Clifford carried the Sarawak flag as they made their way to the solidarity rally for the late 13-year-old schoolgirl. The businessman said their presence was a statement of unity from Sarawakians standing with millions across Malaysia in demanding justice for Zara regardless of racial or religious boundaries. 'This is our message to all Malaysians — bullying is not something that should ever cost someone their life. Cases like this must never happen again, especially when it involves children in dormitories. We want all Malaysians to unite and put an end to bullying,' he said. Eric said transparency in the ongoing investigation was the crux of this issue. 'I have been tracking this case from the beginning when it went viral. The government and all agencies involved in investigating Zara's case must follow proper procedures. We are demanding a transparent investigation to ensure this case is resolved fairly and justly,' he said. The peaceful rally drew over 5,000 participants from Brunei, Sarawak and Labuan, and they converged on the Sipitang Esplanade despite challenging weather conditions. Many among the multi-racial crowd carried banners, state flags and placards bearing the hashtag #justice4zara while dressed in white clothing to demonstrate their peaceful intentions. Meanwhile, lawyers representing the family of Zara in a statement on Monday night said the post-mortem following the exhumation of her body revealed signs of injury. Counsels Shahlan Jufri and Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi said the injuries were during the eight-hour autopsy, but stressed they would not disclose further details until the official media report was released. lead solidarity rally unity Zara Qairina Mahathir

Education Ministry receives #JusticeForZara memorandum, pledges strong anti-bullying measures
PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry has received a memorandum from the #JusticeForZara movement, which outlines four demands aimed at addressing bullying in schools and enhancing safety measures within the national education system. In a Facebook post on Tuesday (Aug 12), Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek (pic) stated that the memorandum was received on behalf of the ministry by Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim. Fadhlina also mentioned that she met with student activist representatives in parliament to discuss their concerns in detail. According to Fadhlina, the first demand calls for comprehensive reform of the national education system, particularly regarding bullying. In response, the Education Ministry has announced several initiatives to improve safety in all institutions under its purview. These initiatives include conducting safety audits, enhancing the bullying complaint system, forming a safety reform committee, imposing strict disciplinary measures such as suspension or expulsion for offenders, and strengthening psychosocial support at every level. The second request urges the ministry to hold engagement sessions with student groups and civil society to develop clear and firm standard operating procedures for handling bullying cases. Fadhlina agreed with this proposal and stated that the ministry would organise such sessions with all stakeholders to explain current guidelines while remaining open to feedback and suggestions for improvement. The memorandum also calls for mandatory, regular training for teachers, administrators, and wardens on crisis intervention, managing students' emotions, and professional procedures for victim-friendly complaint handling. Fadhlina emphasised that guidelines on bullying must be observed in all schools under the ministry's purview and that training will be strengthened to ensure the readiness of school administrators, teachers, and wardens. The final demand seeks public clarification on the issue, specifically regarding the actions taken by the school involved. She welcomed the Royal Malaysia Police's (PDRM) initiative to set up a special task force to investigate the case involving the late Zara Qairina. The Education Ministry is extending its full cooperation to the police, with updates on the investigation to be provided by PDRM from time to time. Fadhlina expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the ministry over Zara Qairina's death, stating that the case remains a top priority. "I place my utmost hope that truth and justice will prevail," she said.

New judge to take over Dr Mahathir's defamation suit against Anwar
Published on: Tuesday, August 12, 2025 Published on: Tue, Aug 12, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has sued Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for defamation over remarks made at a PKR congress more than two years ago. — Picture by Sayuti Zainudin SHAH ALAM: A new judge will preside over former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's defamation suit against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, following a reassignment of the case. According to Free Malaysia Today, lawyer Alliff Benjamin Suhaimi, representing Anwar, said Judicial Commissioner Zaharah Hussain — who was scheduled to hear the matter next week — had informed the parties that a replacement judge would be appointed. Advertisement 'She told us that a new judge would be assigned to take over the case and fix trial dates,' Alliff was quoted as saying. According to the report, Zaharah had previously fixed the trial for August 18 to 20. Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali, acting for Dr Mahathir, reportedly confirmed that the parties will appear before the new judge on August 18, adding that the remaining trial dates have not been vacated. Zaharah is the second judge to be assigned after Justice Jamhirah Ali recused herself due to family ties with one of the lawyers. Dr Mahathir is suing Anwar for defamation over remarks made at a PKR congress on March 18, 2023. In his court filing, Dr Mahathir claims Anwar's speech implied that he was a 'scoundrel' who had accumulated wealth, avoided taxes, enriched his family, and fostered racial division — allegations he denies. He is seeking RM150 million in damages, a retraction, and a public apology, saying the remarks damaged his reputation and caused personal and political losses. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
