Marlins' Connor Norby to miss 6-to-8 weeks after left wrist surgery

MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins third baseman Connor Norby will be sidelined for several weeks after having surgery on his wrist.
The procedure on Wednesday was to repair a broke hamate bone in his left wrist and was done by hand specialist Dr. Don Sheridan in Phoenix, the team said Friday. The recovery timeline is six to eight weeks.
Norby felt wrist soreness during Miami's road series at Baltimore last week and was initially listed with wrist inflammation.
The Marlins acquired Norby from Baltimore last summer in the trade that also landed first-time All Star Kyle Stowers in Miami.
While Norby's tenure with the Marlins started strong — he hit .247 with a .315 on-base percentage while hitting seven homers in 36 games — his performance had been uneven this year, with a .241 average and .289 on-base percentage, six home runs and 26 RBI in 72 games. He was sidelined the first two months of the season with an oblique injury.
'Speaking with Connor in Baltimore, he felt like things were starting to come around,' manager Clayton McCullough said. 'He felt better about himself in the box. He felt like he was making some real strides defensively, and then not knowing at the time what the length of it was going to be and what it was. But he was sore. I think he was just more disappointed, if he was going to have to miss some time, he felt right now he was trending.'
The Marlins will turn to Graham Pauley and Javier Sanoja in Norby's absence. Pauley has played 23 games at third base this season. Sanoja has played nine.
Pauley got the start at third on Friday against Kansas City as Miami began the second half of the season with a six-game homestand.

Sinking in the standings, third-place Yankees swept at Miami

MIAMI – Remember that heady, post-MLB trade deadline optimism around the Yankees - a euphoria that dated all the way back to Thursday night? So much awful occurred around the Yankees this weekend that it's hard to recall. Swept three games by the Miami Marlins, 7-3 winners on Sunday afternoon, Aaron Boone's club is adrift on a road trip that next takes them to Texas. Aaron Judge (strained flexor) could return to Boone's lineup as early as Tuesday night against the Rangers, but saving the Yankees requires more than their slugging captain's presence. In his 2025 debut, Luis Gil struggled with command and lasted just 3.1 innings, while the Marlins flaunted some of their young pitching talent they refused to deal at the deadline. After yielding a leadoff homer to Trent Grisham, right-hander Edwin Cabrera dazzled through six innings, yielding just one more hit and striking out seven Yankees. A day earlier, Eury Perez blanked the Yanks on two hits through six innings, in a game that featured Jazz Chisholm's infamous baserunning blunder on pop fly. Friday's forgettable weekend began with blown leads of 6-0, 9-4 and 12-10 (in the ninth) of a 13-12 Marlins victory. And now the Yankees – entrenched in third place in the AL East – are due to face a Texas club trying to squeeze the Yanks out of their tenuous wild card spot. Gil was charged with five runs on five hits and four walks, with two of those inherited runs scoring on Kyle Stowers' three-run homer off lefty Brent Headrick. After taking home the AL Rookie of the Year Award in 2024, Gil still finished last year with a 5.15 ERA in his last 15 games. In spring training, Gil was sidelined by a strained lat, compromising a Yankee rotation that was about to lose ace Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery. Gil's impending return off the injured list allowed the Yankees to deal for relievers Camilo Doval, David Bednar and Jake Bird without adding a starter. But the thin nature of the Yanks' rotation doesn't leave much margin for error (or injury). Depth-wise, Ryan Yarbrough would be the next man up, and he's still rehabbing an oblique strain. Meanwhile, the Yankees are a poor 18-27 since June 13, with their once comfortable AL East lead a distant memory. 'It's been too long of us playing just mediocre,'' Boone said before the game. 'We understand we've got to do better to have a chance to go where we want to go.'' This article originally appeared on Sinking in the standings, third-place Yankees swept at Miami

Brewers place rookie phenom Jacob Misiorowski on injured list as rotation takes a hit

Rookie pitcher Jacob Misiorowski, a surprise addition to the National League All-Star team after just five big-league starts, was placed on the injured list Sunday by the Brewers. Misiorowski went on the 15-day IL with a left tibia contusion, retroactive to Thursday. The 23-year-old righty had been slated to pitch Sunday against the Nationals, but he was replaced by Triple-a call-up Logan Henderson. 'We noticed during the week — really, our pitching guys noticed during the week — that the throwing programs and the bullpen, something wasn't right,' Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said Sunday. 'We wanted to be smart about taking care of the kid. 3 Jacob Misiorowski is pictured during his July 28 start for the Brewers. AP 'He's got a big future … and he'll try to push through it because he's young. We want to keep him from making those types of decisions unless we know he's 100 percent.' The hard-throwing Misiorowski went 4-1 with a 2.81 ERA over his first five outings and was controversially named as a replacement for the NL All-Star squad. He worked a scoreless inning in the Midsummer Classic, which finished in a 6-6 tie before a home run swing-off determined a winner. Misiorowski, who has lowered his ERA to 2.70 in two no-decisions since the All-Star break, was struck on the left shin on a liner off the bat of Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki in his last start Thursday. 3 Jacob Misiorowski reacts during his July 28 start for the Brewers. AP 3 Jacob Misiorowski at the 2025 MLB All-Star Game red carpet. Getty Images Misiorowski's shutdown comes two days after first-place Milwaukee also had placed outfielder Jackson Chourio on the injured list with a strained right hamstring. 'I mean, I'm competitive,' Misiorowski said. 'I want to play every game, so … it sucks. It's not fun to sit on the bench, but at the same time, I don't want to go out there and not have my best stuff [when I'm] trying to win for the team. So if the best is me sitting on the bench, then that's what we got to do. 'It was basically like, 'This is what it's going to be.' Obviously I was trying to fight it a little bit, trying to throw, but I understand. And you know they're looking out for me.'

Devers homers to help the Giants rout the Mets 12-4 for a series victory

NEW YORK (AP) — Rafael Devers snapped out of a slump with a homer and four RBIs in the San Francisco Giants' 12-4 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday. Rookie Carson Whisenhunt (1-0) threw 5 1/3 innings for his first win in the majors to help the Giants take two of three from the Mets following a six-game losing streak. The Mets, who began the day a half-game ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East, have lost five of six. Making his second career start, Whisenhunt allowed two runs — one earned — on three hits, including Francisco Lindor's first-inning homer. Devers' three-run homer capped a four-run third against Frankie Montas (3-2). The 403-foot blast to right was just the fifth homer for Devers since he was acquired from Boston on June 15. Devers closed out a three-run fourth with a run-scoring single. The Giants piled on in the ninth. Dominic Smith had a two-run single, and Casey Schmitt hit a three-run homer off Ryne Stanek. Backup catcher Luis Torrens got the final out. Key moment Devers' homer was his first since July 23, when he went deep twice against Atlanta. He was 3 of 29 in between round-trippers. Key stat Smith, who played for the Mets from 2017 through 2022, had five RBIs in the three-game series. He had five RBIs in his previous 25 games. Up next The Mets continue a six-game homestand Monday night, with LHP Sean Manaea (1-1, 2.08 ERA) set to start against Cleveland RHP Slade Cecconi (5-7, 3.77). Giants RHP Justin Verlander (1-8, 4.53) opens a three-game series at Pittsburgh.
