The man from Mhlasini was a deputy superintendent in the roads and storm water department.
He was with a colleague and his girlfriend, 32, who were injured when three gunmen opened fire at the Hyundai i10.
Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) spokesperson Prem Balram said their operations centre received calls for assistance after the shooting at the corner of Hazelmere Drive and Quarry Road shortly before 7pm.
'Rusa officers and paramedics were dispatched and found the driver of the vehicle slumped in his seat. He was shot many times and died before the arrival of first responders,' said Balram.
He said the woman sustained a gunshot wound to her buttocks while the male was grazed by a bullet on his back.
The trio came under fire from three men who were standing at the side of the road.
'The passengers fled. The gunmen continued shooting at the driver while they walked towards the car. They fled on foot,' said Balram.
He said 13 spent 9mm cartridges were recovered.

The incident occurred when her parent attempted to fight off the assailants, only to be overpowered as they sped away with the child, in the rear seat of a white Toyota Tazz. According to security firm Reaction Unit South Africa, a prompt alert was raised following the hijacking, triggering immediate action from their officers. 'Reaction Officers immediately mobilised after receiving information that a vehicle matching the description crashed near the Tongaat Post Office,' RUSA said in a statement. They discovered the young girl being comforted by concerned members of the public at the crash-site, who quickly rallied to her side after the traumatic event. Witnesses reported that the hijackers, who fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction, left behind a community shaken but relieved that the girl was found safe. Five wounded following shooting incident in Eerste River
CAPE TOWN - Police in Cape Town are investigating a shooting incident in Eerste River, which left five people wounded. According to reports, the five men aged between 17 and 21 were injured when occupants of a car opened fire on them along Palmiet Street in Electric City on Friday night. A sixth man managed to escape unharmed. Police are now investigating six counts of attempted murder in connection with the incident. Spokesperson Wesley Twigg said the motive for the attack forms part of investigations. "According to reports, a yellow Hyundai i10 drove up to the victims and the occupants opened fire on them. The victims were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment," said Twigg.
